  • “We were a rather tight band at this point in the tour for the album, Satanic Panic in the Attic. This lineup was a transitional time for the band. I was back, but now on guitar. Nina was playing bass (and pregnant with Alabee). Jason NeSmith was filling the multi-instrumentalist role. Dottie and Jamey were getting adjusted to the new dynamic that was being foisted upon them.”
“When we started the tour, we didn’t know Nina was pregnant. In fact, Kevin thought maybe this would be the last one. At that point, of Montreal hadn’t really amassed more than a small cult following. We’d normally make about $300 a show. It was ok, but with baby on the way, Kevin thought he’d probably need to get a real job after the tour was over.”
“Much to our surprise, about 2 or 3 weeks into the tour, the crowds started getting bigger. We started playing all ages venues. These shows transformed us. It was a fantastic tour though probably a bit long. I think we were out on the road for 7 weeks! This show was right before the wheels started to get a bit squeaky internally.”
“The show at Emo’s was inside. It was an interesting lineup. We were playing with several bands including our Athens’ friends, Elf Power and Summer Hymns. Our set was sandwiched in the middle. Normally, we would play a good bit longer. Some songs and skits had to get cut. But overall, I think this was a good representation of our stage show.”

This is an amazing recording for it's time, and a great performance. Old Austin at it's finest.

Hey, BP. I dunno if you read these comments or not, but in case you do: I've been pretty obsessed with The Early Four-Track Recordings comp since the early 2000s. I was a really novice musician back then, so I could never figure out any of it. Lately I've been taking a crack at transcribing it again and I've got a few songs down. One of the things that eluded me is that the whole tape seems to be pitched down almost a half step.
Did you play on these recordings? Do you remember much about it? Some of the lyrics are confusing and I'd love to get your take on what is said in some of them.
Thanks for posting all of these, by the way. They mean a lot to me and some of my friends. I was at this show!

would be cool if they'd played Penelope the way Casper's band covered it, though I don't know when they did that.
