These types of magazines are still very popular in my side of Europe, and I’m super thankful for it
Where are you from my friend? I'm also from Europe (Portugal) but we don't have any here :( I'd love to get my hands on some
@@ilypo Italy, in my region there’s at least 2 different magazines
Back when gaming was about playing games. I feel like the majority of youtube content I run into is more about collecting than gaming. This was refreshing.
Riggel, your CZcams channel rules! I just wanna say that. And I 100% agree with you!
@@erick103 Hell yea. We out here playin games! I just beat beat Crystal Pony!...Thanks for the support :)
Arcadia and Arcsys is a match made in heaven
For some reason the Metal Slug 3 Arcadia cover is one of my favorite Metal Slug images I have saved on my PC.
This is amazing info, thank you for making this video. I grew up reading gaming magazines in Brazil, which were very well put together considering that it was, well, Brazil. There was also a lot of information coming from Japan at the time that we would get very quickly thanks to the big Japanese speaking community in Brazil. What a different world that was.
Isso explica as legendas em português Br. 😂
I think I spent so much money on magazines every month when I was a kid that I probably could have bought a game a month. Makes me wish kid me was smarter.
good vid
Wow these all look so aesthetically pleasing. Fascinating stuff!
12:55 but I need to see the scans of the volume that covers Tekken Tag so bad 😭
Gamest Issue #272 starting on page 155. It's archived online :^)
@@GuileWinQuote Thank you sm man!
6:40 lol, Dan looks so badass for no reason.
Awesome work as usual, congrats !! The level of detail they were putting in that mag it's insane. And thanks for adding that jacket pic, we need it too lol
Thank you for making this video. I was transported back to the 90s when I saw the Gamest magazine cover.
This warms my heart in unimaginable ways. Brazil also had a huge arcade gaming culture filled with magazines and since we have the biggest Japanese colony outside of Japan we always had Japanese friends who would bring the latest games from there. The 90's was such a joyful time for me.
I would love to see some english documentaries on SBO or Cooperation Cup. There was one about a secret MBAACC tech, and Majin Obama (iirc) had one where Nuki told the story of his years competing but I'd love to see some more, or focusing in the less known beginnings of some household names like Itazan and Fuudo's time playing virtua fighter
7:05 "This time it's huge!!", I think it says? Lol, based Psikyo.
Nice vid!
You should mention arcadia Legendary SHMUP highscore record.
Its even still used till today to record all world record in shmup games
Finally got around to seeing this video on my day off. And I've already seen it twice with how much I enjoyed it. Really insightful. Print media for the industry was a very special time especially for Arcade and console market. You just had to be there and part of it, to understand what made it feel so... almost magical in a sense.
Awesome video.
The people archiving these mags are doing god's work
Both Gamest and Arcadia are pretty important to me, even if I was extremely young at the time they were relevant (I'm barely 23 years old so...), but the information they cover for my favorite Shmups (Gamest), and the amazing information I got for games like Senko no Ronde (Arcadia) when I was getting at it with ***ABSOLUTE 0 RESOURCES IN ENGLISH*** made everything much, much easier, I actually wish I wasn't so young at this point when I see all these photos and such, I think they honestly feel like a different sort of culture I wished to experience.
Thanks for sharing these, it's amazing to see more recognition on these.
This is so cool, thank you for sharing! It was dope seeing the artwork of famous manga artists before they got famous! Just goes to show there was like the common culture there, really cool!
I definitely remember hearing about ARCADIA's BEMANI coverage, it was quite cool to see scans of the latest entries of the series! GAMEST I know I've seen bits and pieces randomly online, definitely some great Japanese mags!
thank you for making this beautiful video full of beautiful scans...in 4:3!!!! it looks gorgeous on my crt monitor!!!
Love your channel homie, already binged everything
Thank you man, it really means a lot!!! 🙇🏼
I still have my Gamepro collection and go back and read them every now and then for nostalgia and the occasional cheat code!
LET'S GOOO NEW GUILE WIN QUOTE VIDEO
Wake up baby new guile win quotes video
I never thought anybody would mention Sonic council
Thank you Guile win quote
I wish you would talk about That game in the future ☺️
great as always
This is great content. I used to have several of Gamest & Arcadia Magazines that I bought from a local Japanese book store here in the U.S. Not knowing what the articles were about but just so fascinated with the Candy Cab Arcades, games and art work.
This is excellent! Great content; so glad to discover this channel!!!
Thank you for watching 🙇🏼
wow, i played Sonic Council decades back, didn't know it was based on a Gamest doujin, there's something new to learn every day i guess
love your channel
Really enjoyed this. Very well-presented. There's just something special about having a physical magazine in your hands, when it came to viewing home & arcade gaming culture. Like it's own miniature time capsule, of that era's gaming scene.
Thank you for watching 🙇
Awesome video 👍 I first discovered Gamest back in the 90s in Japanese book stores in New York city and have been collecting it ever since. It's one of the greatest game mags ever and unmatched to this day in terms of quality. I never knew it was originally a newsletter but it makes sense as a lot of magazines first started as newsletters such as EGM. I also figured Arcadia was the successor but saw it was done by the same publisher who did Famitsu so I wasn't sure until you confirmed it. What was great about Gamest was the officiality behind it particularly when it came to Capcom and SNK as you could be assured that all of the art bios and story behind the games was 100% official and game canon as the companies were involved themselves with the coverage in mags. Next you should consider covering Softbank's All About series which were equally as awesome.
Great channel man
Super interesting vid, thanks for doing it, you're channel is awesome btw, love it!! ❤
Awesome video!
i actually didnt watch this video until today, after randomly learning about your channel through searching up "What is slap happy rhythm busters", I'm touched at how much went into not only these magazines but Arcade culture in general, and it really makes sense as to how much passion there is in this side of gaming. It's pretty brave to go on camera too, which I think was really cool of you to do. Now i've watched every vid on the channel! keep up the good work Guile!!!
Thank you for giving the video a chance!! 🙇🏼
These magazines look awesome!!
Amazing video
You’re a saint with excellent taste, young man.
Great Find!
Great Stuff!
Bro I love your content, greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
Best FGC CZcamsr!
this video is blessed 🙏
I’ve always been pretty into old gaming magazines, and I even have a few that I’ve picked up from used game stores, but this is my first time hearing about these two! Now that I know about them, though, I have to get my hands on some issues of Arcadia and Gamest Island… thank you for this video!
Thank you for checking it out 🙇🏼
EGM, GAme Players Nintendo Sega, ULTRA Game Players, NExt Gen, and Game Informer were the goats.
This was really cool to see. It makes me kinda sad that this stuff is so obscure now.
Great channel by the way.
I remember as a kid collecting these computer magazines.
Mean machine's,and game pro where the two I would buy.
Towards the end day's of the mega drive, PlayStation and pologons where all the rage.
Playing the PS1 was crazy just getting used to play on a 3d plane took time to get used to.
It's funny how more things change, the more they stay the SAME.
petition to give Galaxy Fight some love.. the peaks and pitfalls of no walls. Cool ep. 🎉
nothing better than GAMEST, imho
I grew up in North America so I never knew these existed, but I gotta say, there was always something special about print magazines. It felt like you took in all the information, because it's a tactile media. But looking at these Japanese magazines makes me so jealous they had a more dedicated, passionate fan base than we did. And 100% I hope we can have every one of these digitally uploaded and preserved!
Back then Games are already complete, that's what made them Legendary.
fire vid
Thank you for watching 🙇🏼
In the UK we only have Retro Game Magazine now. All the other big ones folded around the same time in the late 2010's.
If I was still in the USA Id be subscribed to Nintendo Force, the fan run successor to Nintendo Power
8:50 Guess I have something else to search for on Buyee
We'll be in bidding wars with each other then!!!
Your videos are the best. がんばる!
Thank you for watching 🙇🏼
Another gorgeous 4:3 GuileWinQuote vod 🙏
Gamelan was the only western publication close to the Japanese mags.
NICEEEE
I still have many Gamest Mooks, Mags and Newtype included Posters - GameFan was favorite!
Gamefan tried their damndest to bring Japanese gaming magazine quality to the West
I love how, even though I can't read a word of Japanese, I can't help but want to sift through like a dozen of these.
Man, if only we had this arcade culture here in the US. Sure there's Round One but as far as I've seen you don't have those dedicated gaming circles and clubs like in Japan. Would be really cool to be part of one.
Wish Tougeki survived to this day. The event not only showcased unique games, but also a unique competitive culture, one focused on character specialists and short sets in single elimination tournaments, much different from the current standard which followed Western conventions.
I will fuck up anyone in Sonic Council
Aya has inescapable blocked Yoga Flame into Raging Demon setups
Holy crap!! Yusuke Murata, artist of Eyeshield21, my favorite manga. That's insane he's in here.
10:35 Hibiki 🥰
12:32 bart don’t say that
Do you have any advice on how one would get their hands on some of these or super cool niche fighting game stuff in general? Not sure if there’s anywhere I should be checking other than eBay or if it’s really just complete luck when one of these pops up. Love the videos by the way keep up the great work
Thank you! I'd def be lurking Yahoo Auctions Japan for all the cool stuff, it's basically Japanese eBay. Depending on where you live, you'll have to use different proxy sites to purchase and ship from there tho.
So cool... good job, GWQ!
Now go home and be a family man!
I actually have Sonic Council for my Japanese Saturn. LOL
I miss arcades. The chance of new games. The graphics you couldn't get at home. The people putting up quarters. The whole arcade scene in general. I remember people would possibly kick your ass if you wasted their time spamming fire balls. Like it was a big no no. I just miss the Event it was to go in to a new arcade and check out your favs, play new games you never knew about. Plus the fighting game live in-house community. Good times.
this was amazing ....bro ...how old are you 😊
0:57 ... fat stack of magazines you can't even read .... yet? It's not too late to start though nowadays there may not even be much motivation? Back in the 90s, I got interested in the language because I wanted to play PC-Engine games, and luckily I also found an actual japanese bookstore in the next town over so I could buy mags like Famitsu. This was enough motivation to start memorizing those kanji ;)
You're not wrong. It's something I definitely want to change sooner than later!
@@GuileWinQuote By all means. It just opens up a big, unexplored by most, world and feels quite rewarding, obviously not just for reading mags, but also games as back in the 90s there were tons of games that never made it out of Japan. And of course, videos - I can't really "understand" spoken JP very well as they often speak so fast (reading is easier for me), but fortunately a lot of gaming-related videos actually have in-built JP subtitles, that helps a lot.
Where can I purchase gamest magazines and Arcadia magazines? Because these are awesome!
Your best bet is Japanese auction sites like Yahoo Auctions!
Now I just want you to do a video about hi score girl
7:44 where can I get myself that darkstalkers special issue
10:26 Hi, what's that game with cat and bunny? Thank you!
Nice video as always💗
Pop'n Music!
Thanks!
It looks super cute and hard😅
Man, I would've loved this back in the day if I even knew about it. Japan gets all the good stuff while america gets the shaft.
also, where can I get an arcadia tshirt?
A gamist is someone who uses the Hard-R G-word.
My parents confiscated my d.o.a. edition
of gamepro from the mail.
They thought it was a catalog of me trying
To buy bad things.
They were confused.
My mother was flipping all through it
An stuff.
They discarded it.
But never got my later one's in the
Mail ha ha.
After that they just didn't care anymore
An let me get magazines in the mail.
R.i.p. d.o.a. edition of GamePro.
😢😢😢
HOLY BASED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you grow up in alabama or Mississippi I can't tell (alabama gang here)

The Japanese gaming magazine did a lot more better job of covering and reviewing the game than the western gaming magazine 🤣
0:53 What's the name of that manga?
Hi-Score Girl
Tips n Tricks wasn't as cool, but it was the closest thing North America had to Arcadia magazine
Use Google Lens Translate, if you can't read Japanese.
Gamefan and egm were my 2 favorites.
Btw, on the neo geo cd versions of kof 97, 98, 99 etc you had art in it from 3 Magazines. Freak, gamest and arcadia.
When exactly did arcades die in America? Like i can remember them when i was in high school. Then 2003 was freshman year of college and my memory resumes in 2009 and arcades were gone and everything sucked
Yo Yo Yo my nigga! as a Brazilian native myself, what do you think of the Brazil Version of Street fighter? Like the comics and some of the advertisements had a different story of street fighter. Such as Guile and Chun li dating, Ryu not being homeless ect.
