Whenever you catch yourself taking classical music (or any music) too seriously, just think of the following scenario: a spaceship full of aliens arrives at Earth and sees a bunch of hairless monkeys running around, and stops one to ask it: "What is the purpose of your existence?"
    And you (and I) would say: "I ... uh ... I ... blow into a pipe."
And the aliens look at one another and go, "Oooooookay," right before they leave skid marks getting the hell out of this solar system.
(Just imagine what their reaction would be if they stopped a conductor and asked them the same question: "I find a bunch of people blowing into pipes, stand in front of them and wave a stick, and then take all the credit.")
BTW, also check out "Salut Salon" and the competitive quartet. Love love love! Hint: don't piss off the cellist:

Great vid, Joanna (As always). Loved Victor Borge and Anna Russell. Although, for me, my musical comedic hero is Peter Schickele, aka PDQ Bach. ☺️

Your down to earth attitude helped me get over the fear of playing a professional concert flute. I have always loved playing music with simple flutes and 6 hole world flutes but thought the concert flute was too pretentious and overcomplex, but so far I'm loving the range and expressiveness I can get with my student flute I bought. Thanks!

I love this so much! Edutainment is the best, I love the vlog brother's projects for the way that they do that on so many topics! I make classical music themed comedy videos on my channel, and it's so much fun! (I also study in the same city as TwoSet Violin, so that's pretty cool) :)

Another classical music comedian hybrid is Peter Schickele, creater of "PDQ Bach", along the same vein as the two you've mentioned, and a composer when not appearing as his alter ego.

Hi Joanna. Is everything alright? I hope so. Now that you talked about the not so serious part of being a classical musician, I'd like to hear about the process of deciding what to do in interpretation when you start studying a piece from an Urtext edition. My Piano Professor at USP is very nice, and let me use some editions with interpretative sugestions (such as Alfred and Schirmer), but I've been in masterclasses where they ask for Urtexts and they ask how you decided to interpret the piece. Since, I'm in love with your channel, I'd like to hear it from you. Thank you.

I grew up watching Victor due to having two piano professors as parents who thought he was amazing. Growing up, I never wanted to take classical music too seriously and its because of him. Now, as a teacher, I make all lessons as fun and funny a possible. We learn better through laughter!

I think I need The Idiots Guide to Music Theory. I tried to take a class but had a bad teacher (long story, but let's just say he told me I would never pass his class because I would not neglect my newborn for his class) but there are things I have no idea what they are, I couldn't identify a diminished minor 7th if my life depended on it lol
I've heard some Victor Borge but haven't followed him. I love classical music but I'm not one of those who eat, sleep, and breathe classical music. I took a music theory class twice with two different instructors. The first one was all about classical music and all he taught was classical music, and very serious about classical music. He made it boring and not fun. The second one explored other music, we compared and contrasted. I think the best was Led Zepplin and Beethoven LOL I do think classical music is more enjoyable if you look at it in a more light-hearted way rather than being so serious about it.

I think I have Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory. There are some very funny music history books by David W. Barber. Satire is a most ancient and noble art.

  • @justanotherpiccplayer3511

The more you study music the more you realise how not serious and that there's a sense of humour in classical music. For example, I read a serious academic text that had a chapter explaining that the only way Handel could get this diva to sing in his opera he had the threaten to throw her out of a 3 storey window

The more I learn the more I am grateful for my piano teacher. She never allowed me to take classical music too seriously. She taught me how to appreciate the people behind the music. For example I learned the original manuscript Fur Elise when I was crushing hard on a boy because that is what the song is about. When we were done she asked me about the boy to which I said "boys that require Beethoven aren't worth the trouble." 😂😂😂
