"Don't call me a rockstar" - Pete Doherty Almost Walks Out of Interview (2016)

- On 8 December 2016, Pete Doherty sat down with Krishnan Guru-Murthy in the O2 Forum in Kentish Town for a lengthy interview ahead of a concert with his band, the Puta Madres. The singer-songwriter discussed his new song, Hell to Pay at the Gates of Heaven, written following the Bataclan terrorist attacks in his adoptive home city of Paris. He also discussed the struggles of getting and staying clean, his relationship with the Libertines (and co-frontman Carl Barat in particular), whether he was religious, his connection to Paris, growing up as an army child, why he was proud to be English, and why he didn't believe in Tories. He also performed an acoustic rendition of Hell to Pay at the Gates of Heaven.
Stranger in my Own Skin, a documentary charting Peter Doherty's battle with addiction, was released on 9 November 2023. Weeks later, Doherty became the latest subject of Louis Theroux's BBC series Louis Theroux Interviews..., in which the singer-songwriter reflected on his life and career. Meanwhile, the Libertines' most recent single, Run Run Run, was released in October, ahead of the band's first album in nine years, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, scheduled for release in March 2024.

I am 71 years old now and I first heard Pete Doherty with Babyshambles in 2005 while in HMP. I got hold of a CD of the first album and thought, wow this kid writes good songs and the music was good. When I got out of the nick my son got tickets to see Babyshambles on Clapham Common and the headlined the gig, I enjoyed that because Pete had just came from rehab and was on form. I like the albums he done since. The new collaboration with Frederick Lo is very good. God luck young man.

I was in Pentonville when he was there. He handed himself so well. He was just a typical annoying prisoner, always begging at the door for whitener. He actually made friends there who he brought into music when he got out.

The talk was back in 2016, so I'm sure (I hope) he ditched that ideology by now, given his intelligence and seeing what's happening around us. Because he was a junkie with a pocketful of crack and the police were on their way. The two women were waiting with Mark so Pete legged it. At the time he didn’t know Mark had fallen over the balcony, he just knew he was knocked out on the street, Pete said he only found out he’d gone over the railing when it was in the paper. Not a great situation and a tragedy for Mark to die like that, but I think people trying to pin anything on Pete are misguided.
Imagine being so helpless after all that fame.
Fame doesn't help much in life. This interview is several years old and Peter is in a much, much better place now, both spiritually and financially.
