  • What I believe to be the first "alien" gameplay of NASCAR 08 running on the Xenia Xbox 360 Emulator, being driven with a wheel. This is a short practice stint at Atlanta until the Emulator suffers a memory leak and crashes lol.
This is accomplished using X360CE to get Xenia to recognize my G29 as an Xbox pad. I'm running 220 degrees in the Logitech profiler, with Linearity and Responsiveness both set to 100 within NASCAR 08's settings menu. NASCAR 09 does NOT have the responsiveness slider, which makes 09 not worth playing on Xenia as there is a major deadzone you cannot get rid of. Remember, Xenia thinks my wheel is a controller so until the emulator supports assigning different input device types, which in-game would cause it to detect that I'm using a wheel and remove this giant deadzone, this is the way we gotta do things.
NASCAR 08 is an enigma and the catalyst for the eventual waves of players who would adopt iRacing in the late 2000's. The game is built on isiMotor technology, which EA had commercial rights to at the time (the actual story is longer, but that's the brief synopsis). So in short, this is rFactor or ARCA Sim Racing on the Xbox 360. Train-track AI, inconsistent AI, weird collision physics, and the several pages of setup options you've come to expect from a modern sim. Because for all intents and purposes, it is.
However, it was launched in the summer of 2007. Sim racing had not evolved into what it is today. Most people did not own the few wheels available for the 360 or PS3; they were largely attempting to play this with Xbox 360 pads. Even with pad filters and driving assists, the cars were basically not controllable outside of Daytona and Talladega unless you were one of the very few who invested into a wheel - again, at a time when this wasn't common at all. The precision you needed with the control stick to be consistent with a car that felt like an unstable boat, made your hands feel uncomfortable after just a few laps.
This greatly affected how many people actually liked NASCAR 08 (and by proxy 09 - it's the same game), which led to poor reviews, which led to poor sales, which led to EA ditching NASCAR games altogether a few years later as their plans to make the NASCAR franchise a hardcore sim weren't panning out - sim racing as we know it just didn't exist yet. This led to Eutechnyx's ill-fated involvement, which led to people ditching Eutechnyx and opting to try this new iRacing thing. Wild chronology. Watched it happen when I was a teenager.
I make it look interesting to drive. It's really not. Security lifts on corner entry are all you need at Atlanta, the car produces too much downforce, and you can get away with crazy slip angles - all of which were the same criticisms levied against NASCAR Sim Racing in 2005.
But for now, enjoy seeing it in action, played at a competitive level. AI on HARD, just a track bar and steering lock adjustment. This is what it looks like when everything goes right and you've got a wheel plugged in.

im impressed you managed to do laps with a wheel pretending to be a gamepad. i wouldnt even make it a corner and just use my controller instead.

X360CE is surprisingly good. Drives the same as playing Dosbox with a wheel like GPLaps and TedMeat do. Bit of centering spring and it's fine.

@@AustinOgonoski i may have dabbled with x360ce on gta v with a stick shift mod package that also added ffb, paired with physics tweaks. great results at 900 degrees. may have to some fiddling to see how that turns out if i decide to emulate on my desktop.

This is the kind of video shitposting we come to expect and love from you.

If I remember right you had to use high steering assist on 08 and 09. It was more stable and faster. Some tracks had to use traction control too.

Nice thank you for the description in the video. Since the game recognizes it as a controller, does that mean there's no FFB?

      Correct.

@@AustinOgonoski brutal. Hopefully Xenia supports usb peripheral connections like PCSX3. I got FFB working on GT6 w it.

I remember grinding away 5 or 6 seasons in career mode in the Ps2 version. I replaced Kyle Busch in the Hendrick #5😀

I also really liked the graphics and damage model for this game.

There is a way to get anti-deadzone, I used it to get PGR 4 (major deadzone when running default) to work with one of the programs that emulates your wheel as a controller - I use x360ce, I don't know if it will work for NASCAR 09 bc it's designed for xbox 360 but I'm sure the answer is somewhere in there

When you do manage to find the right wheel settings for NASCAR 08 and 09, how do you think they fare as games on their own merits?
Would you recommend them to any new players who happen to find them at the right price and don't mind tinkering with the wheel settings?

the physics are so painful when you are driving in this game on controller (PS3)
What am I doing wrong? or is it the game?
