- Debra is a solo female traveler in Mexico. We interview her about her concerns about safety and her plan for living in Mexico. For many female travelers in express concern about travel in Mexico. Debra talks about her feeling about that and her plan.
WOW~! great interview! This lady is really gutsy! When I am staying in Mexico, I spend a bit less than in The US because I am not paying a "set" amount for rent, but I do buy things to help the household. Example: I purchased new bath towels, silverware, some pots and pans and also purchased food weekly for everyone. also paid power bill every other month and helped with propane. Unfortunately, I didn't really keep track, but I am sure it was less than a thousand US a month.
Yes she gutsy. She also does a lot of research and it seems to me very confident in her decisions. -Marc

@@Wilfredos_ Queretaro was actually the original city that interested me when I started researching places in Mexico a few years ago. I will definitely visit someday but I can see it has grown so much in the past few years and by looking at rent and Airbnb prices, it seems I have sadly been priced out of QRO. 😥
Glad to see your interview with Marc and Paulette. Where are you from on Michigan? We are currently back in Michigan for the summer and also live in Irapuato. You may want to think more about Irapuato. It has all you might want with the exception of expats. You will grow your spanish. Prices are lower and has a decent centro. Not a tourist location but the city of Guanajuato not and other tourist areas are not far. Excellent bus system. San juan del rio may also be a good place.

That is really cool that you live in Irapuato, I wish I would have known that when I visited, we could have met. I like Irapuato but it didn't give me the vibe that Aguascalientes and SLP gave me. Maybe I will have to have another look in the future. I was eyeing San Juan del Rio when I was also looking at Queretaro. Will hopefully get there in the future too. Enjoy your time in Michigan! 😀
We are 40 minutes outside of detroit Utica Michigan. My wife is from Mexico and had worked near Irapuato so that is how we got to know the area. She has family in various areas within the central region. We can stay in contact. Ask Marc for my contact info😊

I drove as a solo traveler from the US border to Aguascalientes- a two-day trip - I did this twice (last November and in March this year), and I felt safe both times. I only drove during the day, I spent the night in a nice hotel, I did my research and was prepared. It was fun, safe, easy, and I had good internet connection the whole trip on the highway. And I always drove on the tolled highway (you need to bring enough cash) which is safer, faster and it has better roads.
That is the way to go. Be smart about travel and safety. -Marc

What would happen or what is stopping the cartel from coming into any of the expat or tourist areas. Just wondering.
That’s a great question. Would the expats leave? Would the police become involved? I know that cartel exist along the coast where there are expats living but I think the cartels leave them alone if they’re not involved in the drug trade. -Marc
I lived in Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Here is the deal on Cartel. Believe it or not cartel own many hotels, restaurants, shops and tour companies. They are not in the business of harming tourists. Also, there is police presence on the beaches and hotel zones to crack down on drug dealers and they look out for tourists. Tourism is one of the biggest economies if not the biggest in most of Mexico so, they try to protect that. Finally, if you’re not involved in buying drugs, wandering of in the remote areas where illegal things are going down, or involving yourself in any other illegal activity, you do not have to worry about the cartel. If you need to worry about anything, it is theft, corrupt police on the highways and a sunburn.
One more piece of advice for single ladies such as us, if you’re in a taxi or in a situation where someone is asking if you’re married or here alone, I just tell them I’m married and my husband is here in Mexico with me.
