Saudi Arabia's Sarah Attar makes history in the 800m heats by becoming the first woman from her country to compete in an athletics event in Olympic Park at the London 2012 Olympic Games (8 August 2012).
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

Initially when I saw this all those years ago I thought 'you go girlfriend!' I ultimately thought that it was a good thing that she was competing.
Now, 6 years later how my tune has changed. This girl isn't Saudi, she was born and raised in the US (in one of the most affluent towns in the US i might add) and doesn't even speak Arabic, she was asked by the IOC to represent Saudi Arabia because otherwise the nation would be banned for not fielding women, as a concession they waved the qualification requirements and just allowed her to compete.
This girl has been given so many opportunities because of her gender and nationality that it's actually offensive! There's nothing celebratory about it; if anything she enabled the Saudi government to perpetuate it's misogyny by allowing them to avoid an embarrassing ban. Furthermore she was once again asked to compete for Saudi Arabia in the Rio Olympics marathon event, without needing to qualify!
When someone on TV or on the net talks about 'white privilege' I laugh and think of Sarah Atter, a girl who was allowed to compete in two Olympic games without qualifying, who's been given sponsorship deals despite her poor form and who made history despite her complete mediocrity.

Afghanistan were given a few wild cards the first time they sent women to the Olympics because none met the minimum qualifying standards for any sport, so perhaps Saudi Arabia was given the same for their women. I guess the participation of these women would potentially raise the profile of women's sports back home and make the men in charge see that it's not such a big deal. I personally would have liked to see them select a born and raised local Saudi woman instead who otherwise wouldn't have had the opportunity to compete in sports. No disrespect to Sarah but she grew up in the US and trains there, and only visits Saudi Arabia once in a while (she has dual citizenship through her father). She didn't exactly experience the same hardships and oppression as born and raised Saudi women.

I would partially agree with you if she was born and raised in Saudi Arabia, trained in Saudi Arabia and been allowed to compete by the Saudi committee. Unfortunately, none of the above is true. She is an ethnic Saudi born and raised in the US, also trained in the US. Saudi Arabia allowed her to compete simply because she was raised already in an infidel country, so the repercussions won't apply to her. If she was a real Saudi citizen, she would probably get hanged the next day.
So talk about progress when there really is one. For now, Saudi Arabia is going through its dark ages and no amount of leftist all-inclusive journalism can change that.
