great video. i would love to do line work someday. i always knew what insulator, transformers, and cutouts were but i never had a complete understanding of lightning arresters.now i do. cool
I was always intrigued by why there are all those odd contraptions on electric utility poles. This explains it all and breaks down the concepts. I already was familiar with step down transformers and grounders but all the other equipment was a mystery to me.
What if I will install MOV every electrical socket in my house considering one outlet with extension cord supplying around 3 different applicances. Thank you.
In case of a double steel tubular pole mounted 3 phase distribution transformer is it important to provide an insulation/insulator between LA and metal channel on which LA is installed and why?
OK dear it's very usefull to learing. thank you for your Wonderful explanation.....what is my doublt is in ship we called surge suppersser we using in high voltage generator...do you have any idea about where it locate in generator Excatly and how we identify weither it is good or faulty..
thanks a lot.. i am elect. engineer and in fact we do not utilize surge arresters except for 132-KV power line... i do not work for power company but i think due to non lightning area we live in, we never use SAs in less than 132000 volts... is that correct?
There was a story in the local news about people stealing electricity or wires I cant remember and they got arrested. Maybe our local law enforcement should get in touch. Thanks again
Can high dog with no lightning cause a lightning arrestor to cut power? Guy on the ground said guy on the pole was fixing the arrestor at 3am when I got home. After listening to this, and what I could see through the fog in the dark, I dont think this would be an issue to come fix three hours into new years day unless the fuse blew, or the transformer was picking up extra charge from the arrestor malfunctioning? Maybe I'm thinking this wrong, but foggy high humidity conditions could cause static discharge that might warrant this? Would love any help from someone that knows this trade as I am below a layman.
EXPLAINED WELL ABOUT THE MATERIAL FILLED IN THE L.A. WHAT IS THE SIMPLEST L.A. FOR A 3PHASE 4 WIRE 5 KVA POWER COMING TO A HOUSE TO BE INSTALLED AT THE LAST POLE & THE COST?. THANKS.
Wow this the 1st time in my 35yrs just learned that those thing on the electrical post are arrester tho small but theyre functions are so big..now my question is can we put this arrester in our open field like school ground because we have already casualties of school children killed by lightning when they were caught up taking shelter on the shade trees when rain and thunder starts they had no time to run to our school building.
Thanks great explanation. Just one question, what is the lightning's route? Is it through the lightning arrester? And there are also lightning arresters inside switchgear so what's the concept there?
Also two lightning arrestors within a second becomes super hot when operating for that millisecond and if any cracks or erosion was to form outside the insulation it will explode aka a bad lightning arrestor
I familiared with Lightning Arrestor at our Kaithal(400/220Kv),Power Grid Corporation of India Limited(C/O Alstom-GE T&D India Ltd.,GE-Energy Connections) site. I was an EHS Officer(Teamlease Ltd.,Bangalore).
Greetings Roland, An insulator is always an insulator. An Arrester is like an insulator until a surge comes along and then it turns into a conductor. It insulates most of the time. I like to call an arrester a smart insulator but niether the arrester or insulator manufacturers would like that.
Thermal imaging is the best way to tell if an arrester is not failing. If it is not failing it is working. See www.arresterworks.com/arresterfacts/pdf_files/infrared_thermometer_as_arrester_tester.pdf
Lightning, you’re under arrest!
Ur way of explaining is sooo smooth.. I loved it.. It's just keep refreshing my mind... And made me easy to understand.. Ty so much..
Excellently explained. Soothing voice and I appreciate the bird at the end.
great video, very clear and concise explaining of the concepts.

nice subtle background music, kept the pacing apt
excellent graphic representation. thanks.
So what are the pros and cons of this type of arrestor versus a gap type arrestor?
This answers my questions
#thank you sir
Superb clear educational video.
Beautiful explanation
Great presentation. Nice
Excellent work

Interesting way of diverting the charge to ground, many pathways from top to bottom of the insulator.
great content, thank u for sharing
Good explanation.. thanks Sir.
Thank you, it was very helpful.

Thanks about info light arrester!
What is the current path when lightening is occurred on Lightening arrester
Thank you for the is video.. 😊
Thanks and more power.
Great video..
awesome explination 😘😘😘
tnx..for the information sir..its very helpful..
Thanks. That video is understandable
Thanks great explanation. Just one question, what is the lightning's route? Is it through the lightning arrester? And there are also lightning arresters inside switchgear so what's the concept there?
Yes, where else would it be?

From mine how does VCB works
thank you for this awesome infornation .. thnxs
good video. Pike Engineering extends its greetings.
thnk u ..so much
How many strikes are these good for?
nice video
which protection is given by lightning arrester
direct lightning protection or indirect lightning protection or both?
Both
but what is the point of arresting the lightning if no charges are being brought?
Thank you
thaks , its great.
thanks this video

Whats is difference between surge arrestor and surge counter ?
any body help will help me
SA is the equipment that use to protect the transformer, SC is the material that use to count the number of lighting faults and the leakage current
What's the difference betwerrn an arrester and an insulator, arent they the same thing?
Greetings Roland, An insulator is always an insulator. An Arrester is like an insulator until a surge comes along and then it turns into a conductor. It insulates most of the time. I like to call an arrester a smart insulator but niether the arrester or insulator manufacturers would like that.
A great question and a brilliant reply
Thanks u sir
thank you
Soo good
thnx sir
Nice & easy
How about dry type transformer 440 to 220? Where do I install arrester?
If the transformer is exposed to surges, then put the arrester close to the transformer on the side of exposure.
What is the connection?
Because I tried put the ground bar and connected to the neutral. I think something wrong.
Insulators and lighting arrester are same sir
it's very useful for me thank you ALSTOM...
Thank you i need to give a presentation on Thursday. I hope i can explain it well please pray for me.
How did it go
@Lt.Dan it went well. Thank you for asking
How to test them to know it’s in good condition?
Thermal imaging is the best way to tell if an arrester is not failing. If it is not failing it is working. See www.arresterworks.com/arresterfacts/pdf_files/infrared_thermometer_as_arrester_tester.pdf
Thanks
This type of arrestor was used on my tower crane
