  • Elizabeth Wallace, an Aboriginal lady from north-western NSW, speaks about two native plants and their uses: quinine and quandongs. This documentary is one of nineteen that comprises the Through Our Eyes series features Aboriginal Elders and knowledge-holders from the Ngemba, Kamilaroi and Euahlayi language groups in north-western NSW (Brewarrina, Walgett and Lightning Ridge) describing the land management practices and social, spiritual and cultural knowledge that enabled their people to care for the country for tens of thousands of years.

    Being a history buff I would like to share some knowledge. During world war 2 there were outbreaks of malaria. This caused a shortage of quinine. The US decided to make synthetic quinine. This was called chloroquine.

      I used to live in Arizona. I got Valley Fever a lot due to all the construction they were doing. I went on line and researched a cure. Arizona Willow leaves. You boil 8 leaves in 2 cups of water. Let it simmer for 10 min. It taste bitter. So add some honey 1-2 teaspoons helps sweetened it. Drink the liquid while its still warm.
      I just happened to have one of those trees on my property at the time.
      Everytime I felt the illness popping up I would do this everyday. Once to twice a day. Within 2-3 days I was back to work. Before this it would be still dragging on a week to 2 weeks of time.
      Valley Fever is a form of walking Pneumonia. Which is not contagious. Symptoms are you get a fever, upset stomach, Headache, vomiting, diarrhea, no energy, aching feeling all over and sometime it can lead to death. Hospitals were always filled with patients with this.
      It caused the same amount as deaths as this dreaded beer virus. It hits you the same way too. Which the Valley Fever is not a virus but a fungus that is breathed into your lungs. After having it exrays will show a spar or clot looking thing that can be confused as being a tumor or TB. Test and scraping of the spot is needed to determine which one it is. Now we have this Beer virus almost the samething.

    Such a knowledgeable and wonderful women. It is so sad how the western world seems to have lost respect for our elders due to modern day science. We would all be much better off if we all would learn to respect and listen to our elders more and not take them for granted. Such knowledge we r missing out on.

      Moreso than our elders, the medicines of nature and nature's God has been forgotten all in the name of profit and big pharma. But there are many westerners like myself who still believe in healing foods and natural medicine. So there are still many in the western world who appreciate the wisdom of the earth and the healing of the nations.

    I felt so horrible after just few drops of quinine. My head aches and spins every time I drink it. I don't know what I did wrong, can someone help me please?
    I made tincture. Left 100g for 2 weeks laying in 60% alcohol and then I filtered it through rag to the bottle. Squeezed the rest of tincture from bark to bottle too and added some more alcohol to get back to 100g. That was it.

      what plant did you use? are you sure they sold you the real herb? I always use 100 proof Vodka to tincture. do you have any heart issues, because if you used Cinchona bark it can cause one's heart to beat faster with some people. you might also just be allergic. i have used all kinds of herbs over my life. i am 67, and I have found that there are a few that I am just flat dab very allergic to and they are herbs that are frequently used by other people with no problems. we are just all different.

    • @petergabor6325
      @petergabor6325 Před 4 lety +2

      @@liveoak144 Yes, as far as I can visually tell, the herb seems like real cinchona bark. My mother tried it and she also had some side effects after just few drops, her head was spinning too, even though less than mine.
      I already bought from another seller and I will try to make tea instead, as I read that tea doesn't extract all alkaloids from cinchona, like alcohol does. So maybe some other alkaloids are causing problems.
      Thanks for reply.
