This Probe Is Inside The Sun's Atmosphere

- This probe is inside the sun's atmosphere. After years of spiraling closer to our star, NASA's Parker Solar Probe broke its own record by flying just 4.51 million miles from the sun’s surface - which sounds far, but it’s within the sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona. The goal is to study eruptions like solar wind, flares, and coronal mass ejections, all of which launch magnetized particles towards us on Earth.
Once the probe reaches its predetermined final orbit, the mission will be complete. But what happens to it then? We asked a NASA scientist on the project and he said that we can expect quite a number of additional passages after the final mission, but eventually we won’t be able to control the probe anymore and it will likely become part of the near-Sun dust environment.

NASA is like an introvert kid trying to get closer to its crush but severely burning itself in the process 💀
Well, their crush is blazing hot to be fair
@@SerenityScratchseriously underrated comment
Relatable.
not a good idea stalking crush by sending survellience drones to their stay.
😳
modern day icarus
Having a solar probe and not calling it ICARUS is honestly such a missed opportunity
That name was already used in the sci-fi movie "Sunshine" from 2007.
Yeah but calling it Icarus is just asking for it to fail
It was designed by Spider-Man show some friggin respect.
@@jamesrosewell9081 and a second one called Daedalus
I don't know, having it named after the guy who theorized that solar wind might be a thing and then building a probe to study it at the source WHILE HE IS STILL ALIVE? That's pretty badass.
It reminds us that science isn't over, there's fundamental discoveries still left to be found. That's significant.
This goes against Daedalus's instructions to Icarus.
At least we didn't use wax this time!? :D
Think NASA has progressed beyond feathers and wax !
Except Icarus will send data before death this time.
430,000 MPH = 692,017.92 KPH
Ah good old imperial football fields!

It's a bit faster than when I ride my bicycle right?
@@Elfcheg
Freakin' NAILED IT, dude!!
The only thing missing, for this to be ready-for-consumption, for american audiences is for it to be related to the audience in terms of football fields!!
Thank you, i was wondering how fast 430,000 mph was. Now i have a clear idea
If the probe was travelling from earth to the moon at 430,000mph it would take 33 mins 33 seconds roughly. Wow that thing is moving.
It's less than 1/10 of 1% of the speed of light! (and light is SLOW in the vastness of the universe)
Try stopping in one second to go to the moon.
LA to NYC is ~2,800 miles (4,500km). It would take 23.5 seconds at this rate of speed.
Funny you say that, since 33 is the favorite number of the freemasons. A lot of the numbers NASA feeds you compute down to 666 too.
I can’t even imagine how all that electronic equipment is surviving the barrage of violent destructive vectors coming off the sun… mind blowing.
It's a hoax

We all also put our names into a usb drive to burn in the sun lol
Cool, and thanks.
Hey my name is on there too! There was a whole thing where you could submit your name to get uploaded on it and I did so several years back. So cool!
Weird and awesome.
Hey thanks for your work. I put my name also in there through your forum when I was in middle school , I really appreciate that you guys did that.

Ehy I think your channel is probably the best scientific divulgation channel of all, but may I ask you to write the respective numbers you say in the International sistem ( like you did for farheneit and Celsius in this one), for someone out of the US and really into this things it would make it easier to visualize the speed you were talking about in the video, love your content!
In case you haven't searched it up:
430.000 Miles per Hour is roughly 692.017,92 Kilometers per Hour
@@Xograch I find it so peculiar that us here in the US learned to write numbers using "," to separate the thousands places and "." for separating parts of a whole number. While the rest of the world apparently learns it the other way around.
It's like going from Philly to DC in one second. Not hard to understand 😏
@@sycops1 I looked that up once, and it's a European thing. As an Australian, I would also used the same as you've mentioned.

Love the pics of Solar Plasma ... and your enthusiasm is infectious!!
That begins the probe’s evil villain arc. It comes back 20 years later and it’s pissed. 😂
He'll be coming for all those scientists and engineers who put their names on that USB stick inside the probe. That doesn't seem like such.a great idea anymore, now, does it?
We should start looking into how to clean space before it becomes an issue
Orbiting magnets or something
There's no such thing as space pollution
@@robustanybody5138 there is, we have trash we are navigating our satellites. If they break say goodbye to all the digital money you have
@@robustanybody5138oh really!? Just search this up and find yourself astonished by the amount of junk orbiting the earth right at this moment. Where do you think abandoned satellites, failed missions, decommissioned devices etc. go, may I ask, GeNIuS! Space exploration began not more than a few decades ago. It is stupid to think that humans haven't begun to let another resource rot away.
In this specific case, I believe that this probe would be destroyed by the sun's gravity and be taken inside it or be destroyed by solar flares. However , your concern is definitely valid and I wish we could do something about it😢
I just love watching cleo regardless the information she gives.
It's weird isn't it... idk what she's talking bout half the time
Bruh
Those flare can also change a byte in an n64 causing Mario’s y value to change drastically.
I think Icarus would have been a fitting name for the probe, but Parker is nice too
Your enthusiasm, along with your bubbly character makes these videos very watchable 😊
We’ve come a long way since Icarus! Or have we?
Did the probe ask for permission to penetrate the atmosphere?
More like brushing the Sun's shoulder every 3 months. And the Sun has plenty of chances to shoot it down with an eye-melting death glare.
And at that fricking speed?
Makes sense why there’s been so much more talk about “possibly harmful” solar flares coming at us as of late.
Scientists have been staring at the sun, hoping a flare doesn’t vaporize Parker, or at the very least, make it inert.
Should I feel proud that my name is written on a memory chip inside that probe?
You definitely should, I know I would. 👍
Your name is "Made In China"! 😂
I have no idea how much 430000mph is and I also have no idea how far philly and dc is.
692018 kph is 430000 mph so a trip from London to Moscow would take approximately 5 seconds.
Well philly is a horse so not very fast really & DC is an electric current not to be confused with AC but is very fast sooo I'm guessing somewhere faster than a horse (galloping) with a cattle prod up it's ass! 🤷♂️
I'm talking bull💩 i know
Why did the space probe apply for a job in the near-sun dust environment?
Because after a messy breakup with its navigation system, it decided it was time for a "solar-ution" to its problems! Now it's the hottest thing in the cosmos, spinning its way into stardom. 🔥🚀
That was terrible. Take your thumbs up.

Americans will use miles, yards, school buses and the distance between their own cities to demonstrate measurements, ANYTHING, before using kilometers 🤣
What’s wrong with saying the distance between two cities? It’s a great example of showing how fast it’s going. Europeans will use anything as an excuse to complain about Americans 🤣🤣🤣

I love the Parker Solar Probe. It’s been one of my favorite space probes since it was made. It’s amazing that we as tiny humans can make something that can dip into the sun without melting. It is important to remember the size of the sun though. 864,000 miles in diameter. Put into proportion though if you shrunk the sun down to the size of earth it would be about 11 million miles away!! That’s 11 times the distance to JWST. If the math is wrong blame the AI I used to help me figure it out. I could’ve done the math in my head but that’s the kind of thing ai was designed for. To help humans do the things they don’t want to bother with like long math equations involving large numbers

Cleo, I am so happy that I stumbled on your channel. Always amazing stuff.
In sensible units that's about 190 thousand metres per second, which is still way, way lower than the escape velocity of the Sun (which is more like 600 km per second close to the photosphere).

Hi I love watching your videos!
I’m so thankful that you also gave the data on km and Celsius ❤
I know one of the engineers that worked on this and I got to see the launch close-up. It was incredible.
What a time to be alive! We sent a probe INTO the sun to analyze it.
I love how I can *hear your smile* when you say "follow for more"
These close approaches are horrifically brutal to the spacecraft, as the sun's fast-moving partical emissions are at their highest density (just RIPPING through the spacecraft like bullets through cardboard) while the slower moving emissions (and dust also in orbit of the sun) are significantly faster relative to the spacecraft because of that 430,000 mph, making even them just that much more damaging. It's pretty much the worst-case scenario for a spacecraft except for straight-up lithobraking.
