This Probe Is Inside The Sun's Atmosphere

  • This probe is inside the sun's atmosphere. After years of spiraling closer to our star, NASA's Parker Solar Probe broke its own record by flying just 4.51 million miles from the sun’s surface - which sounds far, but it’s within the sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona. The goal is to study eruptions like solar wind, flares, and coronal mass ejections, all of which launch magnetized particles towards us on Earth.
Once the probe reaches its predetermined final orbit, the mission will be complete. But what happens to it then? We asked a NASA scientist on the project and he said that we can expect quite a number of additional passages after the final mission, but eventually we won’t be able to control the probe anymore and it will likely become part of the near-Sun dust environment.

That’s 11 times the distance to JWST. If the math is wrong blame the AI I used to help me figure it out. I could’ve done the math in my head but that’s the kind of thing ai was designed for. I knew Walker. He was born in the summer of his 27th year. Coming home to a place he'd never been before. They say he got crazy once and tried to touch the sun. He lost a friend but kept his memory.
Now he walks in quiet solitude, because in space no one can hear you scream.

These close approaches are horrifically brutal to the spacecraft, as the sun's fast-moving partical emissions are at their highest density (just RIPPING through the spacecraft like bullets through cardboard) while the slower moving emissions (and dust also in orbit of the sun) are significantly faster relative to the spacecraft because of that 430,000 mph, making even them just that much more damaging. It's pretty much the worst-case scenario for a spacecraft except for straight-up lithobraking.

I'm am a lifelong astronomy enthusiastic or amateur. Years ago astronomy led me to physics where l completed my degree. I've been a followers of lovely British astrophysicist Dr. Becky. She's an excellent replacement for the great Sir Patrick Moore. He was one of the major influencers on me to pursue studying one of the hard sciences. It's great l just discovered this wonderful young lady who is also contributing to the astronomy education over here in North America.. both wonderful assets who no doubt will inspire others to pursue scientific careers.😉👍
