Installing external TV aerial connection on a caravan

- In this video i install an external TV aerial connection on our Bailey caravan. The installation is not hard, but can be time consuming as some parts of the caravan will need removing to gain access behind panels.
If you are not confident doing this, i recommend speaking to a dealership or mobile engineer who will be able to complete this work for you.

Well done, cabling can be a trial in a caravan, I find my set of 'SuperRods' (trade name), extra helpful.
I don't have satellite so when I installed the external aerial connector, which has two outlets, I connected one to the amp and the other hole is used to feed the roof aerial cable with a male plug on, to plug into the other socket.
On site, if there's TV hookup, I simply unplug the roof aerial and attach the extension coax.
Hi Dan, great recovery fella, but what a faff! I did what a previous poster said, and used the booster, all the TV points meet there, and it had a spare!

Great video. Just a suggestion for those who don't use sat... as you already have TV points around the van, couldn't you just add a TV point in the battery box and run that cable to the aerial booster where the roof aerial is plugged into. When your using the on site aerial you can unplug the roof aerial and plug in your site cable.
This would save the hassle of running a number of cables but also buying all of that kit.
Great video Dan, looks like you had a hard time with the instalment I did consider doing this myself but I think I'll get the dealers to do it at the next service, I think I'd fill the swearing box up very quickly probably end up with enough money to pay for the next caravan holiday.

Good video. I'd recommend self-amalgamating tape rather than heatshrink or PVC tape - it'll give flexibility while you're fitting it and then set in place and hold everything tight once it's all fitted.

Great vid Dan keep them up, don’t put too much pressure on yourself you have the knowledge to achieve your goals so do it, save £££ on dealer upgrades that you so can easily do yourself
I recenty bought a wireless camera best money i have ever spent it connects to your phone it the base is magnetic so it sticks to your tailgate it just take it off when travelling recharges via a usb cable so its completely wireless you can just reverse right up to your towbar without having to keep getting out the car to check it

Hi Dan, thank you all good filming... Just a question, can you give details how you fitted F-F type connection onto the external wall plug? Did you dismantle completely or have you used an easy way to fit it? I hesitate to remove completely as I suspect I cannot redone all water sealing... thanks in advance

Hi Dan . On our caravan we have two tv points . If I were to do this, how can I make it so the signal from the campsite signal/ exterior input can go to both TVs when we have a weak signal from the aerial . Can’t I just add a T piece to the coax from the aerial before it goes onto the he amp ?

Hi Dan wondering if I could pick your brains, we're complete newbies at caravanning, our van came with a maxview antenna on the roof and there's a box inside one of the cupboards with a cable running off it up where the tv is and my husband reckons there's a box of some sort missing for it to work... any idea what's missing??

You dont! Unless you have a weather proof cover on the ball, you just keep cleaning it.
Hi, I have bailey with same external 240 socket and points to fit f type female. My question is .. can the rear(inside the van) cover be removed from the inside of the van to allow fitting of the f type female ? So I don't need to remove the socket holder externally ?? Thanks in advance. Mike

Nice recovery on the video Dan. Can I ask why you didn't run the external aerial up to the aerial booster fitted into the caravan as this would have saved you routing wires to the different aerial points?
He will be mighty peed off if he could have done that, but can you do that? Wouldn’t that mean that you always had to use the external? Making the aerial on top of the caravan useless?
I know you said this was difficult but how on earth did you thread it through to the bedroom. I've already filled my swear jar.

i Have two tv aerial outs on my amplifier but can only find one tv point, which is in the bedroom. i cant find for the life of me, find the second no obvious tv point anywhere else? and help would be appreciated
Hi Lee what van have you got? Generally look around the sides or front of the van by the centre chest. Also, try the sides near the front.
Morning Dan, another great video.We have a caravan which already has an external satellite socket installed with all the associated wiring and double (normal and satellite sockets) fitted in the caravan.The existing fitted roof aerial isn't great so I was wondering if I plugged and external aerial (not a satellite dish) into the satellite socket and then the TV into the satellite sockets in the caravan should we still be able to get a picture or is the satellite cable different to normal TV coax.RegardsJonathan
Morning Jonathan, well this is exactly how we use ours. we use an aerial port at camp sites, and do exactly as you suggested. you can plug an external aerial into this socket and hopefully get some signal. The only issue I see is that the external aerial you plug in will not have an active (powered) amplifier.
Check with your camp site, and see if they supply TV signal at the EHU posts, many now do this and this is how we overcome the TV signal issue.

Jonathan Dann you may just need a signal booster. Theyre usually fitted in the wardrobe near the aerial mast that goes through the can roof. Have a look, if not fit one.
Good video, I think I will pass on installing it myself, the wife has yet to forgive me for blowing all the upstairs lights that put our house in darkness until I got a "proper bloke in that knows what he is doing" :-/
I like to do the odd job here and there, but personally I would rather do some overtime and pay someone else to do this. So many different layouts, so many different problems!!
Best to have used copper to copper double screened CAI approved cable. The cable shown was aluminium screened cable, not so good and always use crimp f plugs, not screw type.
Hi I thought I would share the easy way what I do
Locate the status amplifier decide which outlet you want to use for satellite pull out plug connect that via female uhf connector to coaxial cable run that to the battery box and drill through fit outlet inside which is then either connected to post for tv or your dish
Now your selected point is either tv or satellite
Yes it’s not using sat coaxial cable tv stuff is inferior however done this
On several vans and it always works 100% plus as you won’t have a situation where you need satellite feed and tv you won’t need to change your outlet point just make up a cable with uhf male and an F plug at the flying end , in this way you now have an outlet you can use on satellite/status aerial or connect to post TV it’s very easy
So happy I don’t have any tv on board. Peter

Dan, why did you not just buy a caravan with all the upgrades already built in, USB/DAB/TV connections etc.
Thats easy to answer - the caravan we fell in love with didn't have these.... And i knew i could add them in and give hints, tips and inspiration to those who also don't have these features.
@@TheTrudgians can't understand why they are not fitted they are standard on my 2017 cadiz also on the 2019 only went for 2017 because of the layout change

I got my caravan dealer to do mine Dan and they took 2 attempts. Colin
What's the rules on manufacture warranty. I'm being told if I replace sockets such as the 12v ad there is a problem with the fuse box it could invalidate my warranty. Same for the home that was drilled. Did you put any rubber washers on to stop and water ingress?
Stuff and nonsense. They would have to demonstrate that your changes caused the problem. On the other hand, if you're not comfortable that you could do the job without creating a fault, it's best left to an engineer.
Richard Ablitt problems with your fuse box? The only way that would happen is if you wired it incorrectly, so it might be best if you left it alone.
The hole he drilled wont effect the warranty. Bailey have provided a marked blank designed to be drilled, if you want the TV point fitted. He hasnt drilled the caravan wall, hes simply opened up a manufacturer provided space. The connection is covered and alongside the 240 volt input, so unlikely the cover would allow water into there in the first place.
It's not that I'm incompetent and wouldn't be able to do the work as u work with wires . My dealer has said if I make alterations it invalidates my warranty and wanted to get a different perspective and experiences from people.
Ignore what your dealer says. Everything you need to know should be in your warranty documentation.
@@richardablitt9799 the only work that will invalidate your warranty is if you alter the van body. Such as drilling holes or anything that will allow water ingress. Changing anything on the axle orsomething that might interfere with the brakes etc.
That said if you write to your manufacturer telling them what work you're doing, they will reply with either an OK or leave it alone.
Anything inside they are not usually bothered and as mentioned drilling a supplied blankmout wont bother them. It would of been different had Dan ignored the blank and drilled a hole somewhere else.
