    Understanding OPT and STEM OPT
Optional Practical Training (OPT) and the STEM OPT extension provide valuable work opportunities for international students studying in the United States. OPT allows students to gain practical experience in their field, while STEM OPT extends this opportunity for students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Let's explore the application process and reporting requirements for these programs.
    Applying for OPT
To apply for OPT, you need to obtain an OPT I20 from your school's Office of International Programs (OIP). You can find the application form here: apply for your OPT I20 : dms.tamuc.edu/Forms/OIP-Stude... . The processing times for all forms are typically 7-10 business days from the date of submission.
    After Receiving your OPT I20
Once you receive your OPT I20 from the OIP, you have 30 days to submit your application to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Always report your employment with our office using the OPT Reporting Form within 10 days of any changes. After reporting with our office, you will receive an updated I20.

    Reporting on STEM OPT
During your STEM OPT period, you are required to submit reports and evaluations. Here are the reporting milestones:
6 Months Reporting: Submit a report every 6 months from your STEM Employment Authorization Document (EAD) start date, even if your employment information remains the same.
12 Month Evaluation: Complete the evaluation on Student Progress, found on page 5 of Form I-983 STEM OPT Training Plan.
18 Month Evaluation: Confirm your personal address and employer information.
If you have a new employer: Complete the Final Evaluation on page 5 of Form I-983 for the ending employment and fill out pages 1-4 of Form I-983 for the new employer.
For any additional employers: Report the information and complete pages 1-4 of Form I-983 for each new employer.
Employment Ended/STEM OPT Ending: Report the last date of employment by completing the Final Evaluation on page 5 of Form I-983.
    Applying for STEM OPT Extension
To apply for the STEM OPT extension, follow a similar process as applying for regular OPT. Begin by applying for a STEM OPT I20 through your school's OIP. You can find the application link here: STEM OPT I20 Application: dms.tamuc.edu/Forms/OIP-Stude...
