Paul Sereno: Dinosaurs

  • Many of us harbor a deep fascination with the creatures of yore. Informed by Hollywood and Saturday morning cartoons, we picture them as giant monsters lumbering through the forests, gobbling up medium-sized beasts, and terrorizing gaggles of smaller ones. But does that image hold up in light of the latest research? Paul Sereno is a world-renowned paleontologist at the University of Chicago, a National Geographic explorer-in-residence, and the cofounder of Project Exploration, a Chicago-based organization that seeks to make science accessible to the public-especially minority youth and girls-through direct, personalized experiences with scientists. Sereno kicks off the Festival's Hyde Park Day with an illustrated discussion of the latest findings in his field, in a program appropriate for both children and adults.
    This program was recorded on October 28, 2013 as part of the 24th annual Chicago Humanities Festival, Animal: What Makes Us Human: chf.to/2013Animal

    I think the nose's downward nostrils are do to an upright, 2 legged walking posture and the prevention of excessive moisture loss.

    We never had gills , nor did we crawl out of the water and evolve into a human.
    God created Adam and Eve , and they are our ancestors. God created all things lived and died and will continue to create new living animals, fish and humans.

    Shame this guy is so very wrong. He seems charming and charismatic, but preaches fallacy as fact, and falsehoods and deception.

    Wrong and inaccurate in many ways. Ice ages occur when there is landmasses at the poles. Humans are not influencing the global temperature at all. We will reach the next Hothouse Equilibrium when Antarctca moves away from the pole again in ~80 mio years.

      This statement has no basis in scientific data and contains blatant and proven falsehoods such as "humans are not influencing the global temperature at all". The scientific consensus is that they do and there is overwhelming proof of that in the data collected. Another climate change denier who doesn't have a clue of what he is talking about.

      @@joergmaass Then show me the 'overwhelming proof of that in the data collected'. Tell me something about the CO2 climate sensitivity. What is the consensus saying?

      There is no landmass at the north pole

    • @nyoodmono4681
      @nyoodmono4681 Před 3 lety

      @@underthetrees4780 There is Greenland within the polar circle and Greenland has the largest ice shield in the northern hemisphere. The arctic sea around Greenland, Russia and Canada is pretty thin shelf ice and therefore shrinks every summer to a large extend. The southern pole always was the decisive one when it comes to an ice age. When Antarctica left the south pole in the permian era, the hot house mesozoic began. When Antarctica moved back to its current position in the cretateous, our Ice age began.
