  • In this christmas episode we will finish this vintage fly or screw press. I am a few days late with the upload because of work...I will do a new restoration video every 1-2 weeks from now on! Subscribe if you want more videos like this and Happy Holidays!
A fly press is a type of screw press in which the screw shaft is driven by a flywheel or a pair of fly weights at the ends of a bar. The wheel can either be cranked by hand or driven by a motor using a friction coupling. The wheel is weighted so its momentum will maintain the motion of the shaft. A fly press which is operated by hand is the simplest of all presses, it consists of mass, handle, body, arm, screw, ram, stop collar, treads, and guides.

Wow. Now that's awesome. You have done a amazing job!! I'll bet that welding took some time. Looks strong now though. You got a good angle on the crack and did some really good fill welding. The cap head bolts are a nice touch to and the green. Your tooling is good to. Just don't forget to put a round collar on the tooling. That is to say the tool that goes into the press. That way the collar takes the weight and stops the tool from sliding up into the inside of the press and hurting anything. Love the green to. Looks really awesome!

@@tom18181 Do you have plans for more videos? I did see a steam boat on your channel. I have to take the time and properly watch all videos. Did you make that steam engine?

@@WickedTools Yep. That’s my model steam boat. It’s been a shared project. My Granddad (who is sadly gone now) and myself made it. Last year I gave it a huge overhaul and got it up to a good standard now. Yeah I do have to make some more videos sometime. I really need to sit down and invest some time into learning more about making them.

@@tom18181 I'm sorry to hear that. This press was my grandads and he also past in 2018. He was a real craftsman of his trade. Old school mechanic and fabricator. He made all sorts of stuff. I have a bending machine he made and i will restore it like this press! I have fond memories of him and the tools he past to me i will cherish all my life!! The boat is superb and i will watch the videos when i get home today!

Nice! I have been looking for a press and came across this video. I want it to to make saw blanks. Dovetail and tennon saws. Shane Skelton used one at Skelton saws in England. He had tooling that punches out the rough tooth form. It would be nice to understand how this tooling looks and how it works. Is there some kind of arbor to which tooling attaches?

Hey Dav! I'm happy you found my channel :) The tools on this press fit in that square ram. It has a hole in the bottom and the tool is tighten with a screw on the ram. I have a tool to make a half circle hole somewhere i need to find. I will make more tools for this press and I will make a video if you would like? For a saw tooth punch out you would need a positive and a negative shaped tool I think... It would be ''triangle'' punch and a slightly bigger ''triangle'' hole that the punch could slide in.That said, I don't have much knowledge on making press tooling...I hope this helps? I looked up Dovetail and tennon saws and they look superb! I hope you start making them! Have a good day! WT

Nice little quick set of tools to really increase the press’s usefulness! Is there anyway to figure out how strong that type of weld is on castings? The end result is a really great fully functional tool for YEARS to come! Good job!

Thank you sir! I did take a chance and try to bend a 10mm falt steel with no plates and it did fine :D Not sure how much would it take to brake it but the plates carry most of the load. So i think for lite work i will do it should hold a long time. I will make more proper tools in the future and maybe make a video of that if you would be interested to see? Thanks again and have a grate and safe christmas!

@@WickedTools Make more proper tools? Yes please! I would love to see how and why such a screw press could be used for all kinds of things. Making a tool that seems built to press in and out bearings be able to do many other things is a grand thing!

@@guymontana5338 A press like this is invaluable for blacksmithing. You can cut, make holes, textures, bend, shape metal,...It's a must in a blacksmith's shop imo. When i get a furnace i will do some demos of the things you can do with this beast :)
