With all due respect: I've been making these chicken drinkers for years. If you had placed the cups much lower on the bucket (yes, you MUST place the bucket on a block because the cups are lower than the bottom of the bucket) you would be increasing the amount of water available to your birds. Also, there is an industry-wide misconception regarding white or clear water containers for poultry drinkers. The use of BLACK containers completely eliminates the growth of algae in the containers. Once the water is exposed to light, algae will form. The concern that black containers will make the water warm in summer doesn't hold water (pun intended). I have tested the water in white containers and black ones in the summer sun...both will be a bit warm, black no more than white. Placing the drinker in partial/complete shade helps.
Was just about to type that--get them as low as you can. Thanks tutu, I almost used my white bucket. Also, I'm wondering if there's a filter you can twist onto the threads of the cups inside the bucket. Our water is heavily chlorinated.
tutujoan Awesomeness Thanks
@Ed E ,
The chlorine should dissipate if left exposed to the sunlight and air for a day or two . Use two or three buckets. By the time that the chickens have emptied the first bucket , the second bucket should be ready for use.
OR collect and use rain water which is what I do . I collect the rain water from the roof into a 55 gallon barrel. From that into a five gallon bucket with the drinking cups . The five gallon bucket is filled automatically by use of a float valve. As long as it rains now and then , I have never run out of water.
Actually , the 55 gal . barrel is located inside of the chicken coop because it freezes here. That volume of water in a barrel takes quite awhile to freeze. If it looks like it will be cold enough for long enough to freeze the water , I attach a seed propagation mat to the side of the barrel on the side facing the corner. My chickens have never bothered the heating mat . And the water does not freeze and I do not have to water my chickens. I collect the water from the roof of the chicken coop. I could collect the water from the roof of my garage. But , I only need 55 gallons of water to fill the barrel . The barrel is usually overflowing to the outside every time it rains.

Thanks! That process is a lot easier than I thought! I love listening to your dog whine in the background, that's exactly how our dog sounds around the chickens! 😂
Thanks! Did this today after watching your video. Chickens love it and now we can go out of town without worrying tip over the little jars.
We go away quite a bit. These food and water buckets work well
great job. I learned your technique and was able to built one for my chickens. thanks.

well crafted.....
+Superbike Mike thanks, it wasn't too hard to make. Gives these guys plenty of water and keeps it clean too.
I'm gonna try this.
Very easy to make. It works awesome.
Have you made an EASY auto feeder too?
Yes, here's a link to the 5 gallon matching feeder too. Super easy to make; it's cheap keeps food fresh and lasts for about three weeks with six chickens. Hope this helps you out. czcams.com/video/9KUPtKDI4AY/video.html
Good
Thanks for watching. Did you make one ?
So if you had drilled the holes closer to the bottom of the bucket AND filled the bucket to the top, you would have had a FIVE gallon waterer , as it is , filled to the top, it may only be a 3 - 3 1/2 gal waterer , good idea though
They're close enough to the bottom. I tend to change their water every few days anyway so it's not a big deal
what size drill was that again?
It should say on the water cup package
How do you do a chickens fence?
They can fly so it would need to be a high fence
What size drill bit did u use
It's at the beginning of the video 3/8. You can find them in Amazon. amzn.to/3aOMOas
My 3/8 hole is just barely too big even after wrapping with Teflon and they leak. The next drill bit size down is too small
Yes, the brand I purchased had the same issue. I had to use a slightly smaller drill bit.
Mine were fine and didn't leak. Make sure you go by the packaging on your cup.
We are in Nebraska and have cold winters. Do you switch to a warmer bowl in the winter?
Yeah you would need a heater to keep the water from freezing.
My chickens only drink the water but don’t peck the yellow stick to refill it. 🤔 any ideas on how to fix that
there is now a different design on the market. don't know when it came out compared to your question or this video's date, but there's now a design that doesn't depend on this yellow stick to be pecked on to get water out.
Thanks for the heads-up
I can’t get my chickens to press the yellow switch in the cup to make it add more water
Mine did the same thing for a few days. They’ll figure it out
Where to find those cups?
You can find them at your local feed store or on Amazon
My cups dont fill back up, any hints or tips?
I can push on the yellow thing and they fill back up but the chickens pecking dont seem to do the trick.
Hi Ashley, The chickens will learn after a couple of days how to hit the yellow lever to get water. Mine did the same thing
So how did it hold up over time? are you still happy with the watering method?
It's holding up awesome. This is super easy and works great! It's getting below freezing now so I need a heater for the water.
Brandon Meador hhhhhhhhhh
Hi. Can these waterers be used for ducks?? Thanks for the video!
They should be able to drink from these
Not ideal for ducks or water fowl. They need to be able to submerge their whole bill.
So does algae grow inside the bucket?
It hasn't been an issue
While I like the idea and will be doing something like it, one thing to note from your video is how much waste there was with this bucket. The waterers are up so high that there is a full gallon of capacity below where the waterers are installed that cannot be used. If you install them lower you can make use of a lot more of the water making it last longer between refills.

I have these red cups From amazon. They are starting to leak more frequently. Ive had them like 1.5 months now 🤔
Mine lasted a long time. they never leaked.
what do u use to prevent freezing in winter?
Use an aquarium heater
Thanks for the tip
Watah guy! 😂
Anyone have trouble with the poultry watering cups? My hens can't figure pecking the Yellow stem to release the water lol
Took mine about a week then they figured it out
A completely unsuccessful method is that the water does not come unless the chickens are beaked and the chickens never beak when the water is not inside.
It took my chickens about a week to figure out how to use it, then they figured it out and they were all set.
Please, what size is the drill bit?
The size of drill bit to use will be on the package of the little red cups. I bought some Wartering nipples and they take 3/8" hole.
Thanks for the added tip
My chickens don't get how yo use the cups
Put a little water in there and after a while they will get it.
You must be from New England!
I sure am..lol Thanks for watching
Homeowner Repair I learned how to walk and talk in Boston! Moved to Texas as a little girl and they immediately put me in speech class 😂. My husband and I moved to Boston in 2005 and that accent came right back lol. Loved the video

I tried this, using 1/8 inch bit, put the pvc tape on, it was a real hassle to prevent the cups from leaking. Then when I finally got it working and I gave it to the chickens, they just ripped the yellow piece out of the cup, draining all the water :(
lol...damn birds. My chickens love this set-up
A 3 what drill piece, 3 inch??
Thanks for watching
I have had problems with these... used outside in dusty areas, the trigger seems to gum-up and will stay open or close slowly and allow water to leak out. i like the stainless nipples better, they arent perfect either, but I seem to not have as many issues.
My plastic nipples have never failed
Mine is not working it just fills up with dirt with water anymore it’s just not working plus they are all loose I follow the instructions perfectly with a 3/8 drillbit and plumbers tape but they’re just all loose and wobbly
Free buckets from food producers. Icing , yoghurt etc.
Thanks for the added tip
My experience is these little cups fill with dust and debris daily and are not at all usable.
Thanks for watching

Thanks for watching
What size of holes did you drill?
Thanks
I forget what size they were, your packaging should state the recommended size for the watering cups that you have purchased.
the drill bit was 3/8 inches
What size drill bit to use?
I think the waterer cups had the recommended size drill to use
3/8" drill bit

How do you prevent the chickens from roosting on top of the lid?
So far they haven't gone up there
If they have something else to roost on that should help. A little 😉
There's a cone you can buy for the top of buckets to keep them from roosting on it. Saw it in another video.
I put my bucket on the outside and just stuck the red things through the wire.
What is the problem with them roosting on the lid?
Made one last week! Only problem I'm having is the chickens just drink all the water out of the cups until they are dry... They can't seem to figure out they need to press on the yellow arm! I been trying to show them repeatedly with my finger but it doesn't seem to be working!
They'll figure it out. Mine did the same thing. They will hit that lever just enough to put a little water in.
Nik Pridy try a laser pointer, and point it at the lever so they can peck it
