Mercedes W15 For 2024 is a GAME CHANGER!

  • Mercedes have finally gotten what they waited for so long-the end of the 2023 season-and it seems like the team has been fully focused on the W15 throughout the entire course of the current campaign. The car has started to receive its form and shape, and with the new design as well as the new chassis, it’s bound to open some eyes from the F1 experts. Be that as it may, the F1 world will witness an improvement from Mercedes to the point of them actually competing for wins and maybe even having a shot at the championship-but what does the team have to say about the car and these ambitions?

As a supporter I still have doubts that they have grasped the ground effect era without copying Red Bull. I want to be wrong and that James Allison has done a root and branch breakdown of the entire car, then started new. Hoping they can at least get a solid and more predictable base concept that can be developed even if it can't challenge Red Bull. That RB19 is a masterpiece of engineering.

The changing of car designs to lessen the effect of 'dirty air' so cars can follow more closely /overtake without tyres going off and other issues was one of the main reasons the switch to ground effect came about. Sadly although there are more changes planned, none will make the cars shorter in length and less wide.

With Allison back where he belongs they have a shot. Only problem is he may not have had enough time yet. The whole zero sidepod idea was not good. Over engineered. • @entreguesaosbichos

Their problem is not so much the time available, but the budget. With enough money, you could put dozens of engineers to work in shifts 24/7 until they solve the problem. The point is that they used to be able to do that, but now they can't because of the budget limit. Mercedes' biggest problem is that they have become used to spending large sums of money and having budgets that are much higher than the competition and now they can only spend 145 million. In the last year before the budget limit, Mercedes spent over 700 million dollars in a single season. The second highest spending team that year was Ferrari, with less than 500 million... Their main strength was their practically unlimited budget. They were used to spending hundreds of millions more than their competitors and solving problems by throwing money at them, and people can't expect them to do the same as they did now that they can only spend the same as the others.

The ‘zero pod’ design gets a lot of flack for Mercede’s woes where as this isnt actually the main issue. The underfloor, suspension and as mentioned in this video - the chassis, are the bigger problems and most of the cause of the issues. The ‘look’ of the car without side pods made many automatically focus on that as the reason and ignore other bigger problems. The bouncing of the cars has more to do with the underfloor etc than the lack of the lack of sidepods.

@@friktionrc You are correct with the underfloor and chassis being the major problem right now, but I feel like the whole design path with the zero pods led them down that road. Eliminating the pods means the entire car had to be changed. I am not a F1 engineer, but from what I understand things had to be shifted all about under the car because they lost the real estate to put things (like rads for example) in the pods. That and maybe they spent (wasted?) a good deal of money removing the pods. This is what I meant.

As an F1 fan since the late 60's, the constant major rule changes are making the sport less and less attractive to fans. Minor tweaks are certainly needed as they see the results of new rules implemented (like the DRS system), but these major rule changes every few years that require a completley new designi ends up being a complete crap shoot. One or two teams get the engineering of the rule change right out of the gate, and all the other teams struggle to catch up for years. In the interim, the races are boring as one team/driver runs away with the championship year after year. While F1 has always been the pinnacle of motor sports, lately it is less about the drivers and much more about the technology of the car. I would argue any of the top 4-5 drivers could have won the championship for the last 2 years if they were driving the Red Bull car. Lewis, Russel, Fernando, Sebastian before retirement, even Valtteri. The FIA needs to stop this crazy overhaul of the rules every few years and focus on stabilizing the spec so that teams can maximize their cars and thus provide fans with more excitement. Until they do the only exciting races are the first 2-3 as we see what team got the spec change right. After that you may as well not watch as the outcome is pretty much assured. It was evident after 2 races in the last 2 seasons that no one would touch Red Bull. If that kind of thing keeps up, F1's popularity will fall off a cliff.

The Problem with 2022s car was they Changed too much in 1 go result when they had a problem they didn't know the cause & thus how to fix it. But from what I read 2022 car to do 0 pod they comprised engine air flow in & suspension this affected power & Mechanical Grip, then add in Problem with car balance by moving driver forward which made it hard for both drivers to set up from track to Track. Then there was the aero package they just couldn't get right either too much drag on straight or too little down force in turns, 2023 car was just moded 2022 car(Putting lipstick on a pig comes to mind). 2024 hopefully will fix some chassis issues then hopefully airo will follow, but more importantly drivers must be able to set it up for how they like to drive, so they feel confident in turning in to a corner it will turn in & exit where they anticipate it will, unlike 2022&2023 cars which were unpredictable at times(read car could switch between over stear or under steer in same corner as tyres tempriture changed or degraded). One thing for sure FIA will continue to favour RedBull that Budget cap breach punishment is looking more & more of a Giant joke it really hurt the Car Development.

And that would mean that Mercedes has spend their budget for next year already this year. How are they going to stay within the cost cap this and next year? Are they going to move more people and research to vague companies outside the budget cap rules and say that the work that is being done there is not for them? Just like Honda in MotoGP, Mercedes believed that their concept was the correct one, and steadfastly stuck to that belief over several seasons. As both of them have found out, history has proven them both wrong.
As a lifelong F1 fan I hope that they can look at the last 2 years objectively, correct their mistakes and get back to being competitive as soon as possible. The fans want uncertainty of outcome, not to watch teams simply trying to reduce the deficit they are going to lose by.
If that means changing the fundamental concept to improve the product then so be it, eliminating the gap to the RB19 has proved impossible, they should acknowledge a change of direction is required

I love F1, and have been a Hamilton fan from his rookie season. But I am getting tired from all these 'big' announcements while the development is ongoing and the new season is few months away. At testing we will get a small peak in the pecking order, and we will see it at the first race in 2024. Before that, it is just talk. Nothing more. I hope we will have at least competition in the front again!

While I don't think Mercedes will be challenging RedBull out of the gates. They do have the resources, abilities, facilities, and the personnel to bring the fight to RedBull by summer break or just after their return. I do think by the end of the year though they will be either be equal or a clear second fastest (race pace) car. Only with a much higher ceiling for extracting performance out of their package in relation to ontrack race pace when compared to Red Bull. I don't see McLaren disappearing anytime soon. If Ferrari can hold it together and get out of their own way and adjust their package and philosophy to better suit the performance that they couldn't extract without overhauling the internals under the body panels. I hope we might actually have another 2010-2012 extremely competitive in terms of raw pace from all teams. Not just 1 or 2 teams we usually see during a rules overhaul when 1 team hits the rules package dead on. I hope it will be at least 3 and pay for 5. With most teams capable of a podium any given weekend. As a Red Bull fan I've loved seeing the winning. That said I'm a far bigger fan of F1 than I am of one team (not to mention a victory feels so much better when there's actual competition). So if the competition is between 3 to 5 manufacturers fighting for wins. And anywhere between 4 and 6 teams are capable of podiums. Sorry for the novel if anybody's actually made it this far into these ramblings of a crazy man!

It's hard to believe the Red Bull car can be so much more advanced than every one of the nine other teams. Of course Verstappen has something to do with that but even Checko usually runs near the front and he's not nearly the driver that Verstappen, Hamilton, Norris, and Alonzo are.

As soon as he does this he’ll retire. Hopefully Albon will get his seat - meaning Max will have another young gun to battle with, along with George, Charles, Carlos, Norris and Oscar. Every YT vid on Merc has claimed to be a 'game-changer', or 'massive step' or 'back to dominance' every week for the last 2 years, yet they still can't beat an egg. Indeed 2 years ago, the zero-pod concept was going to be the next big thing & with the straight line speed the lower frontal area would give them, the Mercs would be untouchable. Well that turned out to be bollox didn't it?
Now you're saying that this will be a game changer before it has even been built & turned a wheel. Well, good luck with that. I'm looking forward to more silver 3 pointed tears next year. I like mine carbonated in a crystal tumbler with a splash of Jamesons.
