  • Another fun way to climb Mt Baldy is through the Baldy Bowl and this is during winter time when so much snow is present. One should have the basic know-how of winter mountaineering and must carry proper safety gears.
    Mt Baldy (Mt San Antonio) standing at 10,064 ft is the highest peak in all of Angeles National Forest. Located east of LA, favorite destination among avid hikers all year round. This is my first ascend through the bowl and it was a different experience. Thanks to David, Martin, Justin, Jeanette and Scott for the company. What a great first hike of the year 2022!

    I have summited Mount Baldy several times I know hiking in the snow is hard but is it easier in the aspect of your not claiming the switchbacks you're just climbing straight up? I've only gone to the ski hut in the snow.

    • @20robertang
      @20robertang  Před 2 lety

      Climbing through the Baldy Bowl might seem easier than the longer route. It is shorter in distance but the climb is on steep slope therefore it’s still difficult due to safety concern. One should have the proper safety gears and the knowledge how to use them. I’ve done snow hiking not through the bowl before and that’s how I learned some valuable experience when traveling in icy condition. It’s different compared to no ice/snow condition. Right now, Baldy is so icy and dangerous but if you have crampons and ice axe, you can try it. Make sure to practice self-arrest first. Be safe.

  • @safc104
    @safc104 Před rokem

    Are crampons necessary or will microspikes do? I'm planning on doing this hike in December, but I am coming from the UK, so I'm still trying to figure out which gear I ought to pack!

    • @20robertang
      @20robertang  Před rokem +1

      In December, the snow up in Mt Baldy will be thick enough to need crampons. One can hike with just micro spikes but it’s dangerous and difficult. So I would suggest that you bring both. When we climb the bowl, micro spikes are needed as well in the lower elevation where snow is packed and shallow. But as we start climbing the bowl, snow was deeper. It’s safer to have crampons, helmet and ice axe on this hike.

    Excuse me but I found your video doing research on the 2 missing hikers in the area right now. Is this the trail they would have taken? And I noticed you are in a group, while I believe the missing were hiking alone, which seems seriously dangerous for the weather, even if you're a top notch hiker. My other question would be, is there any way, after being missing a week at least, that they managed to form some sort of shelter igloo or something? Obviously I know very little of hiking even though I have hiked that waterfall trail in Yosemite...and I was scared beyond belief!

    • @20robertang
      @20robertang  Před rokem +3

      Hey, there.
      To your first question:
      Yes, we climbed what they call the Baldy Bowl. This is somewhat straight up and not just a simple hike but actually mountaineering climb. It needs proper equipment like crampons, ice axe and helmet. Going up this way happens during winter for snow is present. But in order to do it, one has to have a knowledge, right equipment and clear weather. In group is much better.
      For your second question;
      In order for a missing person to survive multiple days being exposed to the elements (cold-below freezing temperature, wind and possible avalanche), he must have extra food to cover the days, way to melt snow like stove, an emergency shelter even an emergency blanket. Some people survived being frozen for days in the past but most didn’t.
      The lady who fell more than 500 ft last Jan 8 was not using a proper traction device and helmet.
      The missing actor on the other hand had a very bad weather, he should not be there in the first place.. at least that’s my opinion. One time I turned around due to change of weather. One must know how to reconsider that. I hope I answer some of your questions..

    • @HorrorHermitofHell
      @HorrorHermitofHell Před rokem +1

      @fivemoreminutes Thank you so much for the information! You answered my questions regarding everything. I was fairly certain of most of it but have no detailed knowledge of hiking as someone as experienced as you. However, the actor's wife said he was an experienced hiker, again which I am not, but I do know, NEVER GO ALONE! Unless, unfortunately, you don't want to be found. I live in a freezing part of Canada, and I never have the motivation to put outdoor gear on just to go to the corner store, let alone go hiking a huge frosty peak alone, in the freezing wind. The fact that another man did the same thing at almost the same time in a close area makes me wonder why there isn't like a law that requires a hiker to have a companion of at least 1 or 2 others. Are there hiking related 'rules' in areas like these? Sorry for all of the questions but I find hiking fascinating as I'm almost agoraphobic so hiking isn't something I get to do

      You’re welcome.
      Some people likes to be alone in this endeavor. Sometimes I go solo as well but not in a dangerous situation. Maybe he was attracted to so many people ahead of him who posted nice photos at the summit. I for one is really fascinated to snow environment since I was born and raised in the tropical country of the Philippines. I never had the experience of snow so I love going out in the winter. But maybe the actor wants solitude. Maybe he was planning to challenge himself and ready for it but something bad happened along the way. If he got injured and had no one to go to get help, he is now stuck somewhere and search and rescue can’t find his location. My friends are hitting the trails to help find him. Maybe today and tomorrow some more hikers will join. I’m still praying that he will be home safe..

    bring a foot or two of 550 in case your spikes blow out. Mine did. Blew out on the way down an ice area, in the dark. Looked down and thought, oh crap! But, I'm a backpacker, "I got this" out with the 550 and made it out fine. ALWAYS have a few feet of "the cord" Same piece has saved my but at least 4 or 5 times over the last 8 or so years. FACT!
