Al Bowlly's version and the song itself were forgotten for decades - now it has come to represent the era - it is one of the most haunting songs ever written
43 years after the movie rediscovered this tune I still associate the 2 with each other. I may even play this in another room for the mysterious echo of it playing in the ballroom.
“I like you, Lloyd. I always liked you. You were always the best of them. Best goddamned bartender from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine. Or Portland, Oregon, for that matter.”
A LOS TIEMPOS D ELA CANICA . SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO . LA DESCUBRI EN 1980 , EN LA PELICULA THE SHINNING , LA CONFUNDIA CON BAILANDO EN LA OSCURIDAD , PARECE QUE EL ORIGINAL ES DE AL BOLLY . ABRIL/23
Seeing the images in black and white, I’m reminded that this was perhaps a favorite song of lovers separated by WWII. And later generations remember it as something creepy.
Al bowlly's midnight the stars and you is the most beautiful song in my opinion, I don't think it's haunting I think it's incredibly lovely and so HANDSOME
Al Bowlly was killed during the London Blitz. The orchestra was under the direction of Ray Noble. NYC talk show host John Batchlor used it as his midnight show closing theme for years

As a real enjoyer of the original score, i don't think that this is a great redone of the original song, i think that they chopped it in to the little bits and blew it's brains off. It's not. Corrected enough.
love everything, but Iin the first part before the vocals some of those background instruments sound kinda cheap like keyboard instruments instead of real orchestra instruments. like 2 of em. beside that great cover
You've always been the care taker mr Torrance
How do you know? Have you always been here?
Management has placed great faith in me. I HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES.
Perhaps they need a good talking to. Perhaps…a little more…

It originally wasn't a huge song, but after the shining came out, this beautiful tune is one of the most famous big band songs in history.

@@johnhaggerty4396yes... sad, but I guess he was one of many
Mr. Caper makes a valiant effort - the synth just tarnishes it alas - Al's version is much preferable
I thought for a moment I had gone back in time. What magic? Thank you for sharing this video with me and many others.

If you grew up in upstate New York, you think a lot about the architecture. We have plenty of it from that era.
Excelente versión! Técnicamente bien resuelta, te traslada en el tiempo.

I love you voice, you need to make mire video with this music in mind.
Heeeeeere's Johnny!
Sorry that the prop phonograph is playing the record backwards while ruining the groove, aiming the needle in that direction.

"The Shining" made this particular 78RPM untouchable these days. What would've been a $5-$10 record goes for several hundred now.
Hi, Lloyd. Been away but now I’m back!

Totally agree. The balance and orchestral rendition of the original will never be matched by todays technology.
