    ABOUT THIS VIDEO: Just got an asparagus fern? WATCH THIS!
    In this video we talk about the asparagus fern (with the latin name of asparagus setaceus). Asparagus fern care is not so difficult and there are a few signs they give us to be aware of some possible issues. These includes your asparagus fern turning yellow, or the asparagus setaceus browning. This change of colour may be because it is time of an asparagus setaceus propagation, the light may not be right, or we may not be giving it the adequate water. If you are looking for a complete guide for asparagus setaceus fern care, this video is especially made for you my friend :-)

    I have had mine for 7 years and it has flourished this past year. It sits in a 12 inch Large Self Watering Pot, with a 60oZ Removable Deep Reservoir and Drainage Holes. I still water the top every other day and mist it twice daily, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. I have 4 foot tendrils vining over and around the window, also south side and indirect light. It does have a sun light also since I live in Seattle with a lot of rainy days and cloud cover. It’s my heart! If I had a fire I’d save my child, cats, and this plant!

    I love the delicate branches on them. I'm a serial over-waterer, so instead I mist her every morning with distilled water. And in the winter, I literally mist her every time I pass her 😅

      Do you mist her mainly focusing on the stems or the soil?

      I do the same and I keep her in the bathroom in a south-facing window. We live in the desert, a very dry climate so I find the bathroom provides more humidity and I mist the soil every day until I see a little bit of standing water and then I mist the leaves. My friend has grown three times as big as when I first got her a few months ago. She is so beautiful! And I tell her so everyday. Going to divide her soon so. I have 2 beauties❤

    I’ve had mine for two years. Haven’t ever separated her and she’s huge. Her voles are almost as tall as me and I’m 5’7 she’s my favorite plant (don’t tell the others) 😂😂 I got her for Mother’s Day because I call my daughter fern. Only to find out she’s not really a fern.

    I spritz mine with water daily and have it in front of a south facing window with a sheer over it. I also use a humidifier in the room. My plant is looking pretty good but it's a little leggy. I'm contemplating pruning it for a bushier look.

    Personally, I keep my asparagus setaceus in direct light on my western window (it gets about 7-8 hours of afternoon sun in the summer) and I keep the plant heavily watered and fertilised.
    It is only small at the moment (most indoor plants take a while to adjust due to my kinda harsh growing conditions) but the few leaves it has given off since bringing it into my home have been pretty large, and the leaves I have (despite being several months old at this point as I had them before winter) haven't actually stopped sizing up despite being so old, so I found that interesting.
    My temperature in summer can get up to 30C+, and I do open my windows when the temperature is above freezing, so it has a pretty massive temperature tolerance and it is right next to where my window opens, so it is living in a very moisture demanding environment, but it hasn't batted an eye, even when some of my hardiest plants like spider plants and peace lilies have struggled.
    I also don't have any additives in my soil, I literally just use pure top soil because I'm on a very *very* tight life budget and don't have the money for housepotting soils that work for my environment, so it's soil needs a very, very low. Though, I do use filtered water- My tap water isn't super bad or anything, I've just had issues with some of my true ferns, so I don't trust the thin foliage to deal with the salt build-up from my tap water.
    Yeah, overall, 10/10 plant. One of my easiest to grow for as long as I'm not being a poor parent and leaving it to die.

    My asparagus ferns is the size of a 6' Christmas tree, I have it in front of my south facing sliding glass door. I need to figure out how to prune it back without killing it or ripping my arms to shreds on the thorns. I never expected it to grow like a vine when I bought it, so now it is in a huge planter and wrapped around an 8' post. It's beautiful, but it has taken over the doorway.

    • @sandy_carpetsthesecond5013
      @sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 Před 6 měsíci

      You can just prune the fronds back, more leaves will sprout lower down on the frond, specifically where the thorns are.
      Also, if you're not looking to get pricked, don't rub up the stem. The thorns actually put down towards it's base, so you can rub down the stem if needed, just avoid subbing upwards.

    Iv been able to keep mine in a pot with no drainage hole, careful watering is key with this, but it hasn’t harmed or caused any issues with mine, such as root rot etc. these guys are so easy, so if it does die off, cut it right back, and leave it alone for a while, you’ll have new shoots in no time!

    • @PlantsandLucia
      @PlantsandLucia  Před rokem +1

      Hiii! You could always use a thinner spike/trellis to give it some support! Do you have IG? Maybe you can send a picture there and we can figure it out.
      Mine is upright without andy support, maybe yours needs a little more light or something else? We can try and see what's going on :-)

      I bought a metal fence post at Lowes for mine, it is round, green and about 8' tall, it is coated so it won't rust and my fern has wound around it clear to the top, I put it in when I transplanted it to a large planter so the bar is buried clear to the bottom of the planter so about 2' is in the soil. My fern is the size of a 6' Christmas tree, it's even shaped like one as it has grown up the post.
