- This automatic gate without the use of electric power allows to open the barriers only for vehicles and to close for big animals.
The red rods connect parallelogram mechanisms of yellow bars with blue bridges pivoted with the base.
The blue bridges are connected together by sliding joints (red pins and blue slotted plates).
Grey cylindrical weights are for keeping the gate closed thanks to cable drives of orange pulleys.

Quite clever. Those who don't understand why one would use it aren't thinking about livestock and perhaps even uninvited visitors who might not even try to get through because they didn't notice the mechanism especially if partly hidden or camouflaged. They see a gate and leave.
There's also a possibility of a barely visible pin which when pushed by the bumper would release a spring loaded latch. Who would ever drive that close to the gate except someone who belongs there?

I am sorry for the confusion. It was meant as a small joke, as in Ohio, a woodchuck and a ground hog are used interchangeably for the same large ground squirrel.

A double set of gates at opposite ends of a fenced lane built into a fence, could allow access by a tractor or skid steer. The slat spacing would need to be narrow enough to prevent a broken or torn up leg with horses. Cattle normally avoid a slatted surface. How about a “Do Over” by adding some pieces of 3/8”x 2 or 3” straps bolted through, on both sides to help maintain the gate if it is hit by livestock. I would use two pair, top and bottom. As a prototype toolmaker and farmer w/ horses, I really like the design. Now you have caused an upheaval of neurons in my brain. For that I thank you. I shall report back if I think of something.

Love the animated CAD rendition! I'm assuming that you used REVIT? So simple that it's disgusting! Ha ha ha! I can see this being applied in several areas where there is no electricity available. Easily made lockable as well. When made of steel, which is what I assume it's designed for, it makes a very nice, permanent, easily maintained fixture. Great design! 👍👍👍👍👍

Nice concept. Yet I was wondering what the the purpose of gate which opens automatically when vehicle is approaching. Purpose of gate is to let the vehicles pass in a controlled way...
In case of a very long vehicles the gate will get closed as the pressurizing wheels will be away...
Still the mechanism is nice and usable in other forms
This type of gate has been around awhile though I believe not proven to be efficient. It obviously deals with some powerful mechanical forces making it very dangerous when it breaks. There should be safety guards installed to limit issues! I also see issues of cleaning out the cattle guard pit when it fills with debris.Make the real deal and give it the longevity test..... great idea though!

Smart idea. However, i respectfully cite a couple of issues. One is the counter weight and what seems to be a hydraulic atcuator providing force against the counter weight. I can see the counter weight wearing fairly quickly. Especially the bigger the weight is. As a result of this the actuator could have dangerous downward forces if the counter weight failed while been used.
The second issue i see is how fairly centered one would have to be while driving through and the clearance one may need. I can see this been used on a ranch to keep livestock in. Typically people have trucks and those trucks are always large and somtimes even lifted. On top of these issues one would have to approach the gate as close to the center as possible just to prevent damaging the gate. Good idea though

I don't really see why you really need a counter weight, because the ramps themselves would lift up if the gate was made heavy enough & the weight of the car would lift up the gate. And when driving onto the ramp coming from the other detection (i.e. the side with the counter weights) I don't see how it will work as it is drawn, unless there is something else I don't see connecting the 2 ramps together. O I see it now, but it would cause you problems for sure, just make both side alike & then keep it free from washed in dirt & stuff that would keep it from working right. :)
There is a 'bump gate' that they use also but people with real nice car would not want to bump the gate I'm sure.

I think you can replace those counter weights with hydraulic actuator, that puts downward force to close the gate.

Im sure an aditional mechanism can be adapted in order to turn this gate more secure. I thougt of two conjugating parts wich will be installednone in the car and another in the pavement

The blue runways are very heavy. The yellow barriers together with the weight pull the runways up to close the gate.

You are right. This design is meaning only when the gaps between blue bars are smaller.

Which type of mechanism you use to make this type of gate ?
The barrier: parallelogram mechanisms.
For connecting the barrier with the blue bridge: spatial 4-bar linkage.
For connecting the two bridges: coulisse mechanism.

What well happens when you go fast?

Because of the inertia the gate can't open immediately.
This means no security, the gate opens for anyone that drives up there 😂
It is probably meant for big farms, such as those they have in America and Australia, to name but two examples, where one part of the farm may have livestock, and another part could have crops; with this kind of gate the farmer can ensure that the animals don't stray into the crop fields and eat it all. As such, the gate wouldn't be where the public can access it, and therefore presents no security problem.

The weight is needed if without it the gate is always at raising position.
No it's not really needed, if you just make the the end of the gates that are in the middle of the drive way heaver (i.e. weighted). Then you could use the turnbuckle attachment on both sides of the gate, to lift both ramps at the same time, then you could eliminate the pin & slot device that did makes the side that had the weight on it go up & I'm sure that pin & slot device would give you problems soon enough. But it is one of those things that would have to be tried out in a real world environment to know what holds up the best.

Nice rendering now fabricate a real one. Big difference.
Indeed there is, however, there's loads of these about. They're usually made from wood and don't have the fancy counter weight because it's not needed if the barriers are heavy enough. They rattle and bang so loud that any animals within earshot stay away, though once they're acclimatised to it they're OK.

can't rely on it. somebody throws a rock under that platform and it doesn't open, resulting both in your car getting scratched and your gate being destroyed
