      Strider, Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage 1-3, Shinobi III, Thunder Force 2-4, Beyond Oasis, Alien 3, Mega Turrican, Steel Empire, Task Force Harrier EX, Sonic 1-3 (and Knuckles), Vectorman, Earthworm Jim, Subterranea, the list goes on.
      This one in particular is so Sci-fi dark and cool. It reminds me a bit of The Orb.

      Good call on Thunder Force II & Task Force Harrier Ex. Thunder Force II often stays in III & IV's shadow but it's f***ing awesome as well, I love them all equally (even if TF IV is clearly a step ahead in technical terms). & Task Force Harrier Ex, while an average game (it has a few neat aspects though), has some good music & some of the best digit voices on the system.
      On other hand you can't mention Revenge of Shinobi & Shinobi III without mentioning Shadow Dancer as well! It has some great music & one of my favorite ending themes out of the whole Mega Drive library. In case you never played this game, give it a go, some solid arcade action await you there.

    I beat this game at my brothers when he owned it. That last level..my heart was pounding, palms sweating losing grip on the controller, not breathing and dare not blink. Greatest gaming experiance of my life. Since then i still have that cartridge that ive re labeled and i try from time to time but cant get past the later levels. Heard it for what felt like the first time on a good model 1 i picked up recently with some studio headphones and was blown away.

    Man, I remember playing this on my dads Genesis when I was like 7 or 8. The music was so cool, and I genuinely felt like a badass when I pulled off a clutch maneuver, or rescued all the miners and collected all the items, making it back to the landing pad with just enough fuel. I even recall building the main ship and some of the enemy robots with LEGO, haha! Never played another game like it, and I find myself going back to it from time to time. It's definitely an experience.

    I'm in the process of finally giving this an honest play-through after owning the game for many years and never devoting much time to it. It requires a lot of memorization and is VERY unforgiving; one mistake can cause a game-over which can get frustrating later in since you often don't know what to do or where to go (pre-mission briefings can be vague) and the game punishes you for making a mistake or going the wrong direction, and given that the levels can take a long time to complete and require much concentration, it can take quite awhile to replay the levels to get to where you died at just to lose again for still not knowing what to do. Music is definitely my favorite part of the game. (speaking of music, Boards of Canada rules)

      Zer0Funk Good luck, I can't get past level 3. I've always been bad at mission based games, but Sub-Terrania is even more vague than most. @emmanueloverrated Před 3 lety +2

    It realy feels like it's not Genesis music today. Given Mr. Kyd wrote his own driver in order to get these sounds... its mindblowing (Z80 programming isn't easy shit). Alone, the music make the game. Then the game is fun by itself, for those who find the game hard, you have to practice and there's tons of secrets and hidden 1ups. Once you got the grip on the controls... get ready for the two last stages... they are abismaly hard, but fucking satisfying when you finish them.
    This is brilliant game, but yeah, it could have been a bit easier, even at easy mode.

    If you're wondering, each Genesis had a Yamaha DX7 FM synthesizer built in to it, which is part of why the quality of this sounds so bad ass

    • @Suzukisenpai
      @Suzukisenpai Před 4 lety +2

      No, you are wrong. MD/Genesis sound chip was a more simple YM2612 and was a regular 4OP FM chip like on the old computers of the 80s. Even arcade machines had the more complex model of the FM chip (YM2608, 2151, 2610). The DX7 synth is a 6OP FM system based on two (!) discrete chips - one YM21280 for the sound generator and other one YM21290 for the envelopes. But about the sound - yes, some of the FM tones of the 4OP chips are really close to 6OP. Megadrive/Genesis soundchip was like it have the Yamaha DX21 synth. It have exactly the 4OP FM chip.

      Albert Elmore this game is highly inspired by gravitar, which is a very hard game to master but gets fun once you managed to master it. Gravitar isn't that popular for being extremely hard, so it's normal that this game also gets more hate than love.

      It is indeed awful -- FOR SPEEDRUNNING. Trying to rush through Sub-Terrania is a great way to have a really terrible time and not even finish the run. This is a slow-paced, contemplative experience that rewards careful tactics, precise aim, and fine maneuvering. I can see why some speedrunners might hate it.

      RudJohns' gaming channel Wait, they do?! Can you source that with a link? I don't believe this at all. (Then again, I also believe that at this point, SNES fanboys are just hating the Genesis with its "inferior specs" and "inferior games" whist spreading their influence to others for no reason.)

      @avideogamemaster Před 5 lety +1

      @@solarflare9078 you need to look up a GDQ run of Bloodlines played by a guy called Klaige. I think he did like 3 runs in different marathons, but one of them was abysmal. He and his couch bashed the game and the genesis as much as they could.

    i remember spending countless hours on this game as a kid, never getting farther than probably 3 stages but kept coming back. tbh i dont even know how i came to have it. i definitely dont remember picking it out at the store? and i think the only game my sega came packaged with was lion king? maybe my cool older cousin gifted it to me. was this packaged with genesis?

    • @dieglhix
      @dieglhix Před 7 měsíci

      it was actually a standalone game and it was a commercial failure because sega did not invest on its marketing at all. The fact you owned it was actual luck and be glad you did because I believe it was an actual imprudent, audacious development

    czcams.com/video/yCPgPENPT7w/video.html . - Gets me every time... pinnacle of music on the genesis..... i think that the reason why genesis music was so good was because they had so very little to work with and they had to try so very hard to make something awesome... which is why ... you can tout the super fancy SNES sound chip till the cows come home ... but the Genesis music always is more interesting... always.
