  • The centralization of the internet poses a fundamental threat to individual freedom. In 2023, a few corporations control most internet services and infrastructure, wielding immense power with little accountability. This threatens democracy, as these corporations can censor content, exploit our data, and exclude users from essential services. In this talk, Ian Clarke, founder and architect of Freenet, discusses how to build decentralized apps on the new Freenet platform.

    I echo this sentiment. We've been stagnate for a while and is stuck in this situation with the internet where only the big ballers get to do big changes.

    What everyone thought Web3 might be is what FreeNet will become.

      Web3 simply means distributed systems. Whether that's Freenet or some kind of crypto sc, it's still Web3.

    Thank you @IanClarkeSanity can't wait to see more. Since your first sit down with FUTO and LR i've been excited to see whats happening. I've asked this question for years WHY isnt this a thing? Well, give the timeline thus far, the answer is because its hard lol but thankfully someone put in the work to make it happen.

      Thank you - yes, if this was easy it would be done already, but I think the time is now right for it and so-far it feels like we're on the right track :)

    I love it! But I have a question about Consensus. Who writes to the data structures? I have been in touch with Hypercore team (Mafintosh, previously called Dat) and SAFE network. Is it just one specific key that is able to sign messages to a contract, or is this more abstract?
    How is this new Freenet different from those two initiatives?

    • @IanClarkeSanity
      @IanClarkeSanity Před 5 měsíci +1

      Anyone can create contracts according to whatever design they want, decentralized datastructures can be created using contracts as building blocks.

    is veilid valid or u already have a better service?

    • @IanClarkeSanity
      @IanClarkeSanity Před 10 měsíci +4

      Not too familiar with Veilid but my understanding is that it's an anonymizing proxy similar to Tor or I2P, but which uses a DHT. With such systems the services are still centralized, they're just hidden. With Freenet the services themselves are decentralized.

    Must new applications be written, except for a browser, for everything we do on the internet? in that case it will be a hard sell.

    • @IanClarkeSanity
      @IanClarkeSanity Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yes, but only once per service - and we can get a lot of the functionality people use by providing decentralized versions of a small number of widely used services like social media. It's ambitious, but necessary.

      @@IanClarkeSanity Ok .. would it be an idea to try get the maxtrix/element people into it? person-to-person communication seems like something that should exist on freenet. Customer support could be another driver (?) which also involves communication ..

      @@biondanishgenomeinstitute8193 We use Matrix ourselves for dev discussion so when we build a decentralized group chat system we'll certainly try to make it Matrix compatible if the Matrix protocol is flexible enough.

      @DFPercush Před 8 měsíci +2

      This guy invented the original Freenet back in the '90s also, so he probably owns any copyright or trademarks, if any, on that name. So the renaming kind of makes it an overhaul of the original idea.

    • @butmunchass
      @butmunchass Před 8 měsíci

      His original idea is better than his current idea. The old network is used more than the new one. The new network is probably a money making idea. The old network couldn't really be used for making money.@@DFPercush

    I love FUTOs mission, but you all really should get some charismatic talent on staff to change these presentations into more of a show/news format like SciShow and their various educational channels. Perhaps even get some kind of collaboration with Hank Green since he clearly knows how to make education entertaining.
