- Touring apartments in Melbourne, Australia. I actually went to more than 10-15 places, I didn't include all of them because you probably wouldn't want to go through that with me.. I'm so glad we didn't settle with those shoebox-sized apartments and managed to find a pretty decent one in the end.
@iamchrisyap on all socials.

Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed this!
This was actually only half of all the places we inspected.. I probably averaged 20k steps per day just inspecting all these different places.. :')
Being the first time in Australia how were you able to manouver securing a rental unit considering the requirements for verification of employment and verification of income
Honestly no idea. It really was a God provision for us. My wife have previously stayed here long time ago, but yeah we just gave as much documents we could and prayed for the best.
Hi can i ask what app did you use to look for these rentals? Im also looking for an apartment here in melb
Domain!
Thanks for your video Chris, really loved how you showed every place with specifications and details. Probably moving to Melbourne next year and will be staying somewhere close to CBD as well and this is such a great source of information to decide the suburbs. A BIG THANK YOU!
So glad it helped!! Welcome to Melbourne in advance!

Thank you!! Glad to be here! Yeah it can get a lil tricky hey
I feel bad for the Australians who cannot find affordable housing@@iamchrisyap
Thank you for the warm welcome! I completely agree with you that finding a place to live in Melbourne can be challenging, especially for young people and new arrivals
this was great! thinking of moving to Melbourne next year, so this was very handy!
That’s awesome! Glad it helped! Melbourne will be waiting for you!
This brings back a lot of memories. I arrived in Melbourne from The Netherlands almost 25 years ago (geez, time flies) and had to go through the same process at the time. Thanks for the video.
That’s awesome. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Hey Chris! Your journey is almost exactly what I'm going through in my life right now. I'm keen to see how your journey unfolds!
That’s awesome Ethan! You moving to a new country too?
@@iamchrisyap I just moved to Melbourne early last month!
Resounded with your backstory leading up to the big move. I'm glad I'm not alone in this as well!
Yeah change is never easy hey! Glad to know I’m not alone too! 👊🏼
Eeeeek!! Rent was cheap about a year ago in the city but appears to have gone up heaps the past few months!! Glad u found a place!
Yeah covid rent prices now all being raised significantly! Really glad we found a decent place!

thanks man! watched your video on launching your brand. cool stuff man. hope you'll be able to find your way here too! cheers mate
Hi Chris lovely video , btw what app do you use for editing thumbnails? You thumbnail fonts look well curated.
Hey Ali! I use photoshop!
The city's growing population and high demand for housing have led to rising prices and limited availability. It's important for individuals to research and plan ahead, as well as consider alternative options such as shared accommodation or living in outer suburbs.
Hey Man thanks for this great video, very informative! I'll be doing this kind of things in a month and I need reference with similar condition like me (student visa with dependant), thankfully your vid come up on top! I just have few questions if you don't mind answering: 1) How long does it take to get accepted by agent when you apply? 2) Is it hard to get accepted if we don't have income (not yet) and history of renting in AU? Thanks in advance!
Hey Evan! Glad it helps!
Hmm typically it takes around a week or two, but highly dependent on the demand of that place too. It does take longer sometimes.
It deffo will be trickier if you don’t have strong financial records. Depending on the area you’re applying for, it can get competitive, especially in the city.
What we did was just show whatever financial records we have from our home country and prayed for the best. 😅
@@iamchrisyap ahh I see thanks for the info! yea a bit worried about the timing of the application approval since it will affect how long the short-term we will take before committing the long-term, at least from what we've explored in AirBnB the prices are so so high 😕anw, good luck on your journey!
You can check out some Facebook groups, many of them have short term rentals, might be handy for you. “Fairy Floss Real Estate” is a good one. Just be mindful of scams.
What a crazy coincidence you filmed my apartment in Southbank.
😳😳
A lot of people from the sub continent are returning back to India...Many I've spoken to have simply have built their plagued riddled mortgage for life and now the sold up selling for over a million dollars.
They said it's soo expensive as well as the infrastructure in Melbourne is third world.
Hey Chris! Wow Im so surprised how much rent has gone up since your video… we looked at 2 bed, 1-2 bathroom and 1 car park and the cost is between $550 pw to $750 pw !!! I know what place you stay cause of the bathroom hahah - we looked at one there 2 bed 1 bath 1 car for $650 !!
Just curious is Singapore not more expensive than Melbourne?
I just came back from Singapore and anywhere like Chinatown/ Tanjong Pagar/ River Valley looked HEEEAAPPSSSS nice but expensive!
Making me wonder is it cheap to live in Singapore pr is rent just too crazy RN in Melbs 😂🥹
Hey buddy! Yeah it’s crazy. and I thought we were already paying too much..
Haha I’m not too sure about SG! I’m from Malaysia. But yeah SG prices are crazy too I heard!
Just have to say your glasses are super cool!
Glad you like them!
Man, I'm arriving in Melbourne in a couple of weeks and it already feels like I'm in for a big raffle.
You got this!
Peep the Hario V60 my g 😎☕
Hi Chris. I was looking to move to Melbourne and was wondering where you would recommend staying while looking for an apartment? Cheers
Hey Chris! I think it would largely depend on your budget and lifestyle. Might make the most sense staying close to your workplace and somewhere within your budget, as the prices now can get quite expensive. If finding a temporary place while looking for an apartment, I would go with a place that would be time and cost efficient!
So wild! This is what my husband and I are also thinking of doing 😅. Except he’s currently there right now, will I’m still working in my role. Was wondering, did you guys have a job already lined up when you moved? Or secured one after the move?
Do it!!! Nope we only secured it when we were here, while living on our MYR savings 😂
Good luck to you and your husband! I’m sure it will all work out 🙏
@@ChillinWithDylanPod 😂😂😂
Hi Chris, I am a student. I need your advice on renting properties. Did you stay in airBnB’s when you arrived in Melbourne to hunt for apartments, or did you have a temporary set-up before moving?
Hey mate. That’s deffo one of the few options. We were fortunate enough to have friends that were willing to let us bunk in with them for a short while.
Hey, thanks for the video. What visa did you get? was it 482?
Hey man! We came here with a student visa 😅
Might be applying for a 482 soon though
1 bedroom 1 bath - a tiny box is 500 in new zealand so.....Parking a day would also cost $100 hahaha. All the cons I'm hearing is pros for me comparingthe living cost in my country
No way..
hi nice video. can i check where did u stay while looking for an apartment?
bunked in with a kind close friend that took us in!
What church do you attend? Moving mid year this year
I’m in planetshakers church! Come join us!!
Most Malaysians return from overseas(especially now more than ever)because they realise that life in Western countries is not like how it's portrayed in movies. It's pretty much the same and problems they face in Malaysia is not going to go away living overseas. Also if they made their money overseas, it goes miles longer spending here in Malaysia than in overseas.
That being said, those that remain here are usually those belonging in the Arts/Pure science field or those who seek personal freedom. With the former, if you're a good artist or scientist you are not appreciated as much in Malaysia than you do in Western countries. I personally belong to the latter. Malaysia is great country but as a non practising Muslim is quite difficult to do things here without being judged by relatives and authorities.
Great thoughts!
How long did it take you to find a rental property?
About 6 weeks. But honestly it’s case by case and dependant on many factors
Buy a flat/apartment and always ask for the Body Corporate fees you got to pay in addition to the mortgage.
Then have your heart attack.
Sounds like a great tip 😂
did they put your rent up already?
Slightly. To 600$ pw
Hey! Where did you guys stay while waiting to be accepted?
Hey juju! We were fortunate enough to have our friends let us bunk in their places! Airbnbs was our next best option but they were so expensive!
@@iamchrisyapthanks for the reply man! you also ended up renting your car space for others? How did you put it up online and how much?
Our apartment has like a community app with a forum/chat function, we put up a post there and had people contact us.
There are other apps that does mainly parking rental listings too but we wanted to opt for someone that lives within the same building as that would be more convenient.
We’re living in southbank and managed to rent our park out for around $65 per week!
do you think finding a simple yet nice 1 bedroom with one bathroom and kitchen is hard for a student?? my budget is like 430$ per week
Depends on the location I reckon. If it’s in the city probably pretty rare at this point. Further out maaaaybe yes
Is it in USD or AUD ?
AUD!
Way cheaper than Brisbane ATM haha im sucking it up & buying 😭
You go James!
@@iamchrisyap great Vid mate I love Melbs; enjoy my man 🙏
seems like a nightmare finding places. And do most of them come unfurnished?
Yeah at the the moment it can get abit tricky. Yeap!
What's up Chris.
TIMMMMM!! Miss you brother!!
Hi Chris is 3500 aud enough to live as a person in melbourne per month as an expat?
Hey Nathaniel! That’s considered an average wage, slightly higher than minimum wage. You should be live decently with good planning and budgeting!
@@iamchrisyap Yo Chris, does it also account for the accommodation? any app/website to find an apartment there?
Yeap, most probably with renting a room, shared apartment with others. You can search on domain.com.au. On Facebook you could check out Fairy Floss Real Estate! Make sure to watch out for scams and always have official documents supporting your lease
@@iamchrisyap you should make a video for apartment hunting tutorial. I believe it will be useful for majority of people who wants 2 come 2 melb like me 👍
Will consider that! I hear you!
Are u buying or renting?
renting!
Weirdly now u can find some pretty nice apartments for $400 a week
Really?? Where!!
@@iamchrisyap cbd and the outer parts of the city ?
400 dollar will get you only a studio in a dilapidated building :D
🥲🥲🥲
You should blur other house hunter's faces to protect their privacy.
You’re right! I’ll do that next time. Thanks for the feedback!!
$500 is nothing. Stop complaining.
You call these apartments tiny?!?! Never move to Europe. The apartments in this video are huge
😫😫
I have to be honest, the glasses and that cap , is so irritating to look at. I dont know why, looks terrible.
Then don't look. This dude looks good.
