      Great work!
      I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the accuracy of both the fenix7 and the epix. I've had the 3, 3hr, 5x and 6. I upgraded to the 3hr simply because it had the wrist HRM, but the other swaps were all because I was frustrated with poor HRM accuracy. Every model seemed to over-promise and underdeliver. My fenix 6 was rubbish for tracking heart rate, and frequently lost connectivity with my garmin hrm strap...
      So, a long-winded way of asking - is the 7 worth revisiting the fenix range???

    The 7 is so much more responsive than the 6. I use garmin for many years but I really enjoy the touchscreen for non-activities. More than I‘d have thought. And I have to say that my first thought when I took the 7 out of the box was „wow it looks so much nicer“ and I felt the 6 immediately looked like some ancient tech. I like the new features and the small tweaks to common guy items makes usage way more convenient as well. All in all I love my F7X Solar. Just wish it would integrate better with iOS.

    Thanks for the review. You answered the question I most needed, the swipe map feature is exactly what I need coming from a world without this ie., no 6X. Going to go ahead and upgrade at next watch purchase and spend the money for the 7X. Very useful info and loved that you came back months later to answer the questions you are asked. Large reason I moved from all the amoled smartwatches I tried to the Fenix 5x was the screen visibility in bright sunlight... Can't beat the Fenix. Plus being the sapphire version I can drive a nail with the thing if I need to without damaging it.

    Quality straight talking video that hits the nail on the head. Big price, small upgrades. I would of course love the 7 and would use the scrollable map function when trail running, but I got my Fenix 6 for 375 a year and a half ago and could sell it ( maybe ) for 200. Then to fork out the extra for the small improvements would hurt. Happy with the 6 so maybe will wait for the 8.

    I own a fenix 5 plus and personally I still feel a bit overwhelmed about purchasing a Fenix 7...The reason is that I divide what Garmin watches do in 2 different categories :
    1 - things that can really help me (interval training set up/working out programm- VO2 - performance status - heart rate...Music - Stryd connection - Maps)
    2 - things that make me curious if the device is right (stamina...Oxymeter...and so on)
    I agree that fenix 7 make the Maps easier to navigate but I do not remember runners spending time on this during a competition...except if they really partecipate to specific type of race ...
    I totally agree about the Epix look...I still love my Fenix 3 ...and I would not change it for a smart watch... :D

    Cheers, Mark. Being a happy owner of a fenix6X Pro Solar who very much considered buying a 7X this was just what I needed. Kind of answered all the questions I had. I'll wait for the price to drop on 7X and continue with my lovely watch which I also love when hiking (even though I'll have to wait for the benefits of the touchscreen in regards to the map feature). 🙂

    While watching this video, the courier brought me my 7X. Titanium Gray with the leather strap. The gray is very light, lighter than my previous titanium smartwatch. The sides are two tone gray, and look plastic. The leather strap is the worst watch strap that I own. Still, the original dark-gray strap is very comfortable and looks on par with the watch.

    Important note on the heart-rate monitor!
    There is just one thing to add to Marks great video which is probably petty to most, but essential to me. This is the first Fenix (from what I know) that has the heartrate monitor embedded into a slightly raised element within the chassis. That way the recording (this is when the lights are constantly flashing for a short period of time) is less visible (if at all) as the monitor sits closer to your hand.
    As I wear the Fenix devices for years day and night, the light that escapes during the day would obviously not bother me but it happend frequently that I woke up from my Fenix 6Pro especially when having my hand close to my face.

      I still have my 3HR as well. I'm interested in upgrading due to GPS accuracy. On my MTB rides I'm often .5 to 1 mile off compared to my phone and friends Garmin. Have you noticed it's off?

  • @rpsota23
    @rpsota23 Před rokem +13

    I see the value of improved GPS accuracy in my case. I go for multiday forest trips, mostly not following official turistic paths. I record my route using forest paths, where many crossings appear. Then, knowing preciselly where I am is important. HOwever, following Mark way of thinking - my Fenix 5 with blind map does the job too, if I am not sure, simply pull my phone 😀. Flashlight is something I am really looking for - sleeping under open air, sometimes surprises might happen (recently some horny deer near to me started to roar in the night...). I always lay my flashlight next to my sleeping bag, however it might be lost in the grass in the night. Having flashlight on my wrist...this is a game changer. As for maps - Epix display claims more details on map than Fenix. OK, however I don't need to see half day route in front of me. I need to decide, whether to turn left, right or go straight at a precise point. For that, I need to see close perimeter, fullstop. Touch screen in maps? It is game changer for me... One more from other sport - I do kayaking. I am older (54), so keep my heart under certain rate is imporant to me. Can you imagine trying to activate Epix while holding paddle by both hands? 😀. Batery - 6 days of Epix might be OK, however - after couple of years it will degrade to two - three days - much faster than degradation of Fenix battery. Simply because battery life is measured by charging cycles and you have to charge Epix more often. My dissatisfaction with battery life will probably starts around a week between charging. My Fenix 5 is far from that, I charge it maybe once in a fortnight. Simply I don't know and I don't care. With Epix, I am afraid, that after a year, I will be close to a moment, where I will notice the charging cycles and it will start to disturb me. Epix dimming display? Being in the forest I enjoy peace, tranquility... Imagine, that you stare at your watches for any reason and you are afraid of a moment where the watches will turn off and you will have to touch or push anything to turn then on again. Frankly, I was not sure till this video, whether Epix or Fenix 7x, but the way of Mark's thinking finally got me away of nevereending mental loop of hesitation. Sorry for my english, hope you got my thoughts. Six months to my 55 anniversary, six months to get my Fenix 7x :-). take care

      How is the 7x do you like it alot after all this time?

    • @rpsota23
      @rpsota23 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@MelbourneExclusive0 it fulfilled all my expectations. Currently I prepare for Pacific Crest Trail 2024, testing during several days thru-hikes all the gear. Combo Fenix 7x with outdoor navigation Locus is exactly what I expect from it. Route created on Locus and imported to Fenix makes hike easy from navigation point of view. Even - I didn't expected it - tiny map on Fenix display helps sometimes (rivers, ponds). I never use Fenix to create route, just to follow path. I rarely have to pull mobile to check route on larger screen. Guidance even through forest paths is very detailed, at least in the Czech Republic. Very useful is one hour warning before dawn - time to look for well positioned trees to hang hammock :-). No exaggeration. Battery life - 10hours navigation a day, link to Tempe, easy four days. Watch torch - real godsend as I expected. Screen visibility - indoor I just need to see the time or read messages. OK even without glasses which I need for working with laptop. Outdoor - excellent. Buttons - if you customise them, light the torch or initiate wireless payment is easy. By the way - I cannot remember last time I paid using cash or credit card. All through Fenix. The only issue - as with Fenix 5 and other Garmin watches is a rubber wristband. It irritates my skin, 4 dollars band with quickfit from Aliexpress solved it. I noticed, that when kayaking (and wrist is not submersed, just wet), hearth rate measure is somehow lazy and unreliable. Toucscreen? Cannot imagine having back Fenix5 without it. I really recommend sapphire glass. So many times I hit wall or whatever, watch body is with scars, glass with zero deffect same as with Fenix 5. Battery life in normal life (not outdoor) - easy three weeks. Cannot imagine Android smartwatch two days batter life. When Fenix warns me, that battery is going to be depleted, still couple of days of normal usage. Once I reached 1%. I switched then to "just watch" mode, gained another day... Unbelievable. For thru-hike I suggest to purchase at Amazon or Aliexpress reduction to usb c. One cable fit all gear then. Should I buy Fenix 7X pro? No. I don't regret. Torch at Fenix 7x is enough strong, battery life superb. If they release blood pressure measurement, I would probably consider. Should I revert back to Fenix 5? Never. Czech garmin offers discount if you bring them old garmin watch. Cooperation with sensors - flawless. Should I switch to Epix amoled? Never. Having display always ready is more than more bright and detailed display. Not clear in normal life, but outdoor, walking with heavy back for half a day in 30+ C, you don't want any "issues" like waiting, whether display will go on or not. On top - when you hike with poles and work with them really hard, you don't have time or energy to twist your hand to put display on. You just need to glance at your hand in whatever angle to check display. Maybe runners. To have full view of who is writing - 55years old, Camino Franches 2014,marathon, hiking "heavy" - 23kg on my shoulders. All that tested since February, worst conditions minus 10C.Getting ready for PCT24 SOBO. I cannot imagine doing this very difficult hike without Fenix. No advertisement, I paid it all by myself :-).

      @@MelbourneExclusive0 I believe in one of next versions Fenix will get LTE capabilities at least for some data exchange. I read somewhere, that chip is ready for that. I forgot - music on Fenix 7 is almost useless for me-wearing BT headphones, where receiver is in left headphone while watch on right hand, while walking it looses connection when hand is behind body. No problem on a bike. I guess😁.
