This entire video was a balm for my (vintage and leather specifically) stationary-loving soul. I love the inspiring idea about the timer, and the analog nature of your tools. I also love that you're practicing narration even as an adult for the thing you're learning! I hear all about the benefits of narration for Charlotte Mason students, and go "Man, I wish I was doing that when I was in former lessons.", but the fact that those 'official official' school days are coming to a close is no reason not to take up the practice!
I feel the same way when I do things for my kids that are Mason-y. Like, bummer I didn't get this. But, I'm a person too! (You're a person too!) I can have these practices now!
And so glad to bring joy to another analog, stationary lady. Nothing beats (fountain) pen and paper.
Not nit-picking or trying to seem unkind in any way, but when referring to envelopes, pens, notebooks etc it is stationEry. With an E. Stationary is for standing still.
A trick to remember the difference is that the E is for Envelope. ❤❤
Ah, thank you! I'm a writer and yet my spelling is atrocious at times, haha. And my dad is an English teacher so I'm used to having my grammar and spelling corrected ;) Thanks for the helpful tip! @@laura108
Oye! So right!@@laura108
I’m tired and pregnant with baby #6. As a recovering box checker I’m being reminded once again that I can’t do everything and I’m not meant to, especially not in this season. Thank you for the reminder. It makes us human to remember our limitations. I love your notebooks by the way. ❤
Many congratulations to you! Limitations are a reminder of our humanness, yes.
Yay, babies!
I am really enjoying how you're filming your videos lately! It is obvious that your time pursuing goodness, truth, and beauty has brought more creativity and joy to what you're crafting! Love it, very inspiring, and challenging! Further up, and further in! ;-)
Thank you! It's been fun to try some new things.
Now the only problem is TIME. Ha! And I have some swirling thoughts on how to film certain footage without inviting a camera into it. (Ie. If I want to talk about a new winter routine in the homeschool, but I don't want to actually introduce a camera into that time, do I just re-create it later?) Aye, the normative question in the modern age: what ought I do?
That was so calm and encouraging!
Wonderful to hear!
I so appreciate your channel. It is inspiring and challenging. Thank you for your dedication and time.
Thank you! So happy to have you here.
I'm glad you mentioned Notion in a previous video. I've started converting my organization to Notion and it's very satisfying. Previously I've been big on bullet journaling but I'm not in a season of life where I can spend time physically writing. I CAN get digitally organized while my baby sleeps on me 🙌🏻
Isn't it so satisfying to create the organisational system too!?
I'm a new mom buried under a boob-barnacle and I'm having trouble imagining days when she won't be physically attached to me needing me every moment of the day 😅 Watching you carve out time for these important things is inspiring and comforting.
Were any of your kids extra clingy? I think my challenge with this babe will be striking a balance between nurturing and helping her gain independence.
I have an ultra-clingy almost 2-year-old and she hasn’t noticed there are five other people in the house until I recently became pregnant again. We’re on the path to weaning and hopefully sleeping through the night. This has been a very challenging season but she’s learning and growing and not always attached to me anymore. It’s actually a bit bittersweet. I wanted the freedom and independence from her little grasp but now she’s growing up so fast. Cherish the time while encouraging her to do things on her own.
Don't rush things and don't rush your baby! I'm a mother of 7 and I'm telling you, it doesn't feel like it but pretty soon these days will be a distant memory. Let it be and be present. Be accepting. Be patient. ❤
Boob-barnacle. Bah! That made me laugh out loud. I was a baby-wearer/nurser too, so my kids were always physically on/near me (and even at 6, 5, and 3, I'd say they are still always near me/underfoot/on me). I used to commonplace on my phone with the evernote app so I could do it one-handed! There are seasons for various tools and yours may be one to have different tools for similar practices.
During my heavy baby years (I had three under four), I did utilise my iPhone for audiobooks (would narrate to the baby out loud, no notebook) and for my calendar. I also used it for my learning like podcasts and videos so I could listen while cooking, cleaning, driving. It felt like more of these practices were tied to other handwork that needed to be done-and that was a really fruitful season for me. I learned the priority was the work of motherhood but that work was made richer by what I filled my mind with. I hope that makes sense! You're doing such good work snuggling that baby!
@@thecommonplacehomeschoolthank you! This is what I needed to hear. Baby #4 under 5 due in a few weeks and this is encouragement for my current season. ❤
Many congratulations to you!@@rachaelh5594
This was so beautiful! I just got a Moleskine planner for 2024, and I've never used a Moleskine one before (but love the classic notebooks). I haven't truly used a planner for quite a few years, and went down a rabbit hole and felt overwhelmed with the choices, and worried I made the wrong one, but it helped to hear you used them for years! Gonna have to budget for that Monk Manual and timer soon - they're both beautiful!
I was a faithful Moleskiner for YEARS. I needed a slightly different layout and wanted to customise (which sent me to Golden Coil for only a year), but I'd still recommend Moleskine in a heartbeat!
Autumn, I got my Monk Manual today and feel so much more equipped for 2024! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us. I know this takes a lot of time, energy and creativity on your part and I wanted you to know that this Mom in Missouri appreciates this space. I started listening to you a few months ago and since then I have continued to leave your videos feeling greatly inspired to live and mother with greater intentionality. Thanks to you, I immediately started a commonplace journal and revisit it often - I take it wherever I go! I also love having a Mother’s Diary. This has been a fantastic tool that I didn’t know I needed until I had one. I’ve invested in living books for my daughter’s library and it brings me so much joy to see her world come to life. I knew of Charlotte Mason before watching your channel, but you encouraged me to dive right in! Currently reading CM’s The Outdoor Life of Children and it’s been a wonderful read. I greatly appreciate all that you are doing here! Cheers!
Wow! Thank God! This is such a happy note. (Also, isn't the Monk Manual BEAUTIFUL!?) These practices have been great gifts to me and I'm so glad I could help introduce them to you!
Yes and yes! 🙌🏻 So grateful for the knowledge that God has given to you and for your generosity sharing with us! (The Monk Manual had been SO GOOD!) ☺️💛
Winters in the World was my standout book for 2023. I was introduced to it by Sarah Clarkson and it reinvigorated my earlier interests and studies from my time at university as a young woman. As a Grandma with a 5 year old and a 25 year old in the house, my reading time and studying time is limited by various needs in my Domestic Monastery. I have also found in 2023 that when I see, acknowledge and then work 'unto God' within those limitations, I am blessed. It is not easy but as you so wisely said, if we are diligent then it is pleasing. Thank you for your transparency and your gentle humour. I too am a fountain pen addict...very interested in the Monk Journal.
Oh, how lovely! i'm a big fan of Sarah Clarkson and am not surprised she read/recommended Winters in the World! I love hearing these lessons in my "early years" season will be continuing and expanding through each season of life. Such an encouraging idea!
I am inspired by this
Lovely to have you here!

So happy to have you here!
Your pencil grip gives me hope for one of my kids who’s grip is “wrong.” Thanks for that 😆
Haha! I broke my finger in a car accident after college and can no longer bend it the way I need to in order to hold my pencil/pen, so I have to use my middle finger to make it work. But, yes, you can totally have beautiful handwriting with a unique grip!
Thank you for a lovely video! When you start a new Commonplace Book for “2024” are you suggesting that 2023’s book was pretty much full? I have used half of my notebook during 2023 and I feel like I should still continue until it is ‘full’ before buying the next book. I struggle with wondering whether I just give myself permission to begin a new book. Decisions…decisions!
Usually I fill a notebook before I move on, yes! But I've also switched notebooks for various reasons before (paper bleeding, too small, etc.).
Your channel is one of my absolute favorites and such an inspiration! Do you have any podcasts that you would recommend?
Oh, thank you! Well, I do have The Commonplace podcast. My favourites: A Drink with a Friend, Speaking with Joy, The Literary Life Podcast, Classical Stuff You Should Know, and Schole Sisters!
@@thecommonplacehomeschool thank you! I’ve been enjoying yours (of course) and a few of the others listed. I’m going to check out the others I’m unfamiliar with. 🙂
You may have another video somewhere about this, but when in your day do you usually work in these notebooks?
Ooh, I don't think I actually do.
Some it is kind of random, some organised. My weekly planner gets time every morning before the day gets going. Logbooks is used during lessons daily. Mother Academia happens daily but I don't have a set time to do it. Mother's diary is used every 3-4 months. Work notebook can be daily but is heavily used during out-of-doors time, early evening, and on my work day. I commonplace weekly, usually on the weekends.
What do you do with the notebooks and planners you fill? I’m torn between using more digital tools for a more minimalist approach to possessions and using and potentially hanging on to physical notebooks that become a collection of things I’ve recorded, learned, planned, etc. My house is small with not much storage space, so it’s a constant struggle to avoid clutter.
Hello, almost-no-closets-here too! I put commonplace books on the bookshelf but I discard yearly planners at the end of the year. I will keep my Mother Academia notebook with the commonplaces!
Love this video! I was also wondering if you have read any of the Unmachining articles on substack. Especially Peco and Ruth Gaskovski and Hadden Turner. Many of the things you say about machines and being human remind me of them.
Love the unmachining substack world! After I gave up my smartphone a year ago, I wandered into the world of Paul Kingsnorth and Marc Barnes when looking for more philosophical discussions about the Machine. (I'm a big Wendell Berry fan and wanted his clarity in more present things!) I learned of Ruth and Peco more recently and have loved everything I've read! I don't know Hadden Turner but will look him up!
@thecommonplacehomeschool I have also enjoyed Paul Kingsnorth and I love Wendell Berry's work!
Someone left a few brass bookmarks in a Charlotte Mason book I checked out from the library recently. I thought about keeping them but I think they belong to the book now.
I love that. Let them live with the book!
Do you plan your educational content in your Monk planner, along with everything else, or do you make your plans in your log book? If not, which journal would you add the educational planning? Thank you! :-)
I made a full database in Notion for my Mother Academia reading plan. (You can watch me plan it here: czcams.com/video/M11rpHJxqVY/video.html) The logbook is just a record of what we complete in our homeschool lessons each day!
"Liturgical year," "Rule of Life," you must be Catholic? If so, this channel just got better 😊
Haha, I'm not Catholic but have a deep respect for historic church practices.
You have such lovely handwriting! I am 31 and my handwriting is dreadful... It was already on my list but you inspired me with your Mother Academia video to learn calligraphy and a way to improve so it is at least understandable and not only to myself (I know that was not the end goal of that video but with two under the ages of three I don't have the mental capacity to learn anything very heavy, though Latin is also on my list). Have you taken any online courses or used any handwriting workbooks? Thanks for your input, they have been a blessing in the short amount of time I have followed your channel and podcast:)
Hey there! I haven't taken any handwriting courses/used workbooks but I have learned some technical form things from my daughter's (Penny Gardner's book) work that I didn't know before!
I think learning calligraphy is a worthy study. I think it is also a big enough chunk to bite off with such small ones at home. I wish you the best and maybe you can let us know how you are going at some point?
@@thecommonplacehomeschoolThanks for your quick reply! I looked into this and is still interesting enough to keep on my to-do list this year! Hope you had a very Merry Christmas and a great start to 2024:)
@@catherinenunan3584Thank you for your kind words! I have looked into Autumn's suggestion and will take this on, though a little later this year:)
Is that Winters in the World book good?
Yes, I'm really enjoying it so far. Haley Baumeister recommended it (on her excellent newsletter)!

I keep being told a fountain pen will change my life. I finally bought an inexpensive one, just to try it. The scratching was horrible. It felt like nails on a chalkboard. I ended up giving it to a friend. I couldn't take the sound and the feel. If that is the norm, then I guess it's not for me. And I am a person who used to do calligraphy with dip pens. So it's not like I am unfamiliar with the general concept. Those were not scratchy! But I also don't have money to be wasting, trying out a bunch of pens. Or getting one that costs a bunch of $.
It's definitely not nails on the chalkboard! Far subtler and decidedly more delightful. Maybe you had a bad pen? You could try the one I linked! It's less than $20 but I've really enjoyed it.
Thanks!@@thecommonplacehomeschool
I have a fountain pen that has a ball-like tip (hard to explain! ) but it's much smoother than the ones that just end abruptly!
Oh, I will have to look into that. Thanks! @@BugsyB1979
We’re do you keep your mothers education course work? Do you keep another journal? lol sorry for the question but I literally cannot decide if to keep one for my literary life and one for the MEC work 😅 or make one for both
Oh, in my narration notebook this year! ...on random pieces of paper in previous years. ;)
Is your narration notebook your Mother's Academia notebook? I am trying to figure this out too. :-). Thank you for this incredible CZcams channel! ❤️
It is! @@tuscandreams9861
I love all of these things, I love the heart and intentionality behind the video, but I do wish the items you listed were a little more budget friendly. I can get behind a more expensive beautiful leather journal, but a $69 timer is kind of outrageous.
The timer is stupidly expensive, yes. In fact, that is exactly how I described it within Common House. I wasn't able to find one that did the same thing at a better price but I can say they ran a rather large discount during Black Friday. I waited for that.
The spirit of the idea is the practices are for all but the tool will look different for everyone. My tiny mercy lists have been on scrap pieces of paper for years; now they're in a nice formal planner. I re-purpose old notebooks for project ideas and lists, but this year bought a specific one (technically, it's the same one from last year that I'm still using). Same practices, different tools Hope that helps!
The inkwell . . . I was expecting to see you dip your fountain pen in it throughout your video? Do you use it to fill the cartidge in your pen and how do you do that neatly? 😅
I use it to fill the cartridge, yes! I put everything on top of an old cloth napkin and wipe everything down when finished. I usually end up with ink on my fingers but I like that part.
First!
Killin' it.
Have you mentioned yet what Latin books you’re using?
Oh, maybe not! Wheelock's!
@@thecommonplacehomeschool aah, highly recommend homeschool book 👍 thank you.
Important question: which point style do you like for your fountain pen?
I use an extra fine nib right now! I know there's a whole world to fountain pens but I've stuck with my first random buy.
Do you have a list/video of your favorite Charlotte Mason inspired CZcamsrs?
I don't. I do have one about fav podcasts/teachers: czcams.com/video/CfyPZE9Pn0c/video.html
I love how anti-gnostic this one is.
Acts of gentle defiance, you know?
I'm sorry the internet yelled at you for dog earing book pages. I can't remember if I joined in. Sorry if I did. You're free to do what you like! It was only to spare you the horror of opening a beloved book one day and that little corner coming right off in your hand. Ask me how I know...
Hahaha. The internet was, in this case, correct. In my newer books, it never seemed a problem. As soon as I started doing it in my antique copies, the pages began to tear and I realised I needed to stop.
Had to come back to this video and share how much of a game changer the metal book darts are! Those and the quill pen have made common-placing a delightful and more consistent practice. 🤎👍🏼
Aren't they great?! My books look so fancy but I can actually find exact sentences for commonplacing without marking my book!
