  • In this vlog we make the long journey from Horton on the K and A, to Pewsey. We have a lovely cruise and take in the stunning scenery, but then it all goes wrong when we meet the angriest boaters we've ever encountered. They don't like wide beams and they made sure we knew it. (Footage at the end of the vlog!)

That was just one of life's 'smile and wave' moments. At least you can sail on to happier encounters whilst he is stuck with himself and all the unpleasantness that is bound to accompany that fact. Some people are just nasty little tossers and there 'aint no cure for that nor is there any reasoning with them. Happy cruising.

My partner and I have been on the canals for 40yrs between us and the mood has changed so much in that time and not for the better. CRT are now trying to make money as a charity & they have overlooked the basic needs of the average boater, they have improved the towpaths to let cyclists wizz down at a terrific rate & left the vegetation for the wildlife (ignoring the need to moor up). There are far more folks living on boats now who are not true ‘boat people’, in the past we helped each other out and were a community, now there is a new breed of anti-social behaviour which is spoiling it for those who genuinely care for the waterways. It’s a sad reflection on how society has become

We left our narrowboat after just 11 months living aboard. Primarily for personal reasons but a small percentage of our reason, was that the boating community simply wasn't what it made out to be. The early narrowboat CZcamsrs made it out to be this great place where everybody is wonderful and helpful. It isn't pleasant, there are some downright nasty slefish individuals on the canals. This was before phone cameras. I'm convinced if they had cameras they would have recorded me and posted me on the internet with abusive language, a completely fictitious account if what happened and everyone who watched would have assumed I was the horrible person and they did the right thing to immediately shame me forever on the internet. I've been an active Constant Cruiser for some years and I'd say this... while hire boaters can make mistakes they are (mostly) polite and respectful of the fact that they lack experience. CCers are also mostly chilled out. In my experience the problem children are bitter old boys living in marinas with bling boats and limited experience doing daft maneuvers to preserve their paintwork and over-stayers with life problems... over-entitlement has several forms. Widebeams aren't a problem so long as they navigate with caution... so well done you.

Luckily, it's still rare at the moment. We find most hire boaters are lovely and we can forgive them more because they are newbies. As a cabin cruiser I often get derogatory comments but choose to ignore them as they are usually based on ignorance. My grp was built long before many of the other boats on the canal and is fully licensed so they just need to get over it. Most would sue their own mothers is they could all for sake of some money. Never being loved or cared for makes one a cold person and we see a different world to the lovey dovey, nicey nicey where something inconsequential can ruin the day. I don't hate anyone, I just see most as being sheep to the slaughter as they blindly abide by rules and regulations, until the day comes when finally we are in a totalitarian nightmare, and all because they hadn't the stones to stand up to governments. I have just left The K and A, in fact We followed you back up the Caen Hill flight. We had a similar encounter with the live aboards you feature on your video coming into Honey street. A boat in front of us made a late decision to moor and despite already being in Tickover I put my boat in to reverse. The additional noise made some stick their head out of the side hatch and start shouting about slowing down, despite the fact that I was going backwards from tickover. Anyway an exchange followed with the persons partner joining in who was not even on the boat. Very similar pattern, very disturbing equally wrong. I witnessed several boats get shouted at. It is in my opinion the 'Shoutiest Canal ' Oddly the one thing the canal was not built for was to be moored against. It is designed with shallow sides for movement. I personally think there should be a license barring ASBO. You shout at boats you get your license revoked!

Hi both we can sympathize with you on this subject. We have been subject to similar outbursts on the grand union on more than one occasion, I usually tell them, very politely of course, if they object to the big boats on the wide canels they should perhaps try the quieter waters of the narrower canels, but god its hard to stay cool & calm. You did very well both, also as he is moored by the wide beam rental boats at honey street hes in for a busy time isn't he. 🤣 . Hope you have both recovered now after a few sherberts of course lol. Take care. X

Hi Julie, it seems some boaters feel they have the right to be offended buy your choice of boat. Luckily, it is the tiny minority

Well well well...on a personal note I was becoming a little concerned 🤗...good to see you again and pleased all is well 👍...it sounds as if Mr & Mrs Holiday persons have anxiety prior to trapping themselves on a boat which will always exacerbate any problems. If you see them again please wish them a happy outcome with their forthcoming divorce...this will not happen...divorces never end well....you are allowed a quiet snigger...actually no...just laugh out loud 🤣🤣🤣

Scotland has the Crinan, the Great Glen and the Forth canals - all of which are disconnected other than by the sea. Probably not the best place for extended cruising... :)

There's sometimes three, there may be two, but there's ALWAYS one! Well done for not rising to the bait as Karma awaits him. I'm sure your regular viewers have already identified him by his narrow boat and he has already received words of wisdom.

We would hope that by blocking his face, we have preserved his privacy. If his boat name is on display we can't help that. However, the last thing we want is for him to get added grief from other boaters
