      Hey thanks so much Manuel, glad to be of service. one thing I forgot to mention in the video is the medium format digitaliza doesnt expose the film edges the same as the 35mm. I wind up using the stock epson holder for MF. youre gonna have fun developing, its a rush each time you take it out the tank and hold up to the light and realize you did that. let me know how it goes.

  • @dankspangle

    I had to make my own 35mm and 120 masks from card cos I couldn't find masks that let me capture the film edges (hipster, I know, but I like them). The main problem with my homemade masks is that the film sits directly on my lightbox (I photograph it with a digital camera and macro lens). If the film is curved (some films curve more than others, Portra 400 120 is lovely and flat, Lomo films are super curvy) you'll get Newton rings where the film touches the lightbox. This doohicky looks like it could solve that. Thanks for reviewing ;)

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer Před 5 lety

      Hello thanks for checking this out. One thing someone asked made me realize that the medium format scanning mask actually covers the edges and blocks the inscriptions so while this is good for keeping the film flatter doesn't allow scanning of the edges. What I do when I need the edges scanned of medium format I will put a photograph frame glass over the film on the scanning bed. Give that a try in a dark room so that you don't have any glass reflections

    Thanks so much for this review/mini tutorial :D
    I recently bought the Epson v850 and have been using the film holders that it came with - which now have a piece of plastic material in between the negative and the scanner glass and is a crazy dust magnet. I spend about 2 hours removing dust from each roll of film I scan (after using gloves, an anti-static cloth and a blower :O lol) so I purchased two of these.
    Just wanted to know how focused the scanned photos are compared to the negative holders that come with the epson scanners. I know with the v850 the holders have little feet that you can test to find the sweet focus spot of your scanner but these don't seem to have that.

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer Před 3 lety +1

      Hello how are you? the focusing is a good question but I never have problems with sharpness. the problem is if the film is severely curled when i remove the magnet it doesnt stay fully flat but my photos still come out fine. interestingly when im using a flat film I will go back to using the stick holder as I can scan two strips at a time. yes I heard some of the epson models have a plastic in between thats not a smart design. what I do is use a silk cloth to wipe the film as well as the scanner glass and dust is rarely a problem. trust me even with these theres no perfect scanning routine yet, so many different ways people do it including photographing the negatives. hope this helps.

      @@Raychristofer Hi Ray - I did watch the whole video becasue I own one of these (for 35mm) and it does not hold the film flat, and I was seeking answers.
      You yourself say, "you will still see a slight bow in it." And that is my point. If a slight bow is acceptable, then fine. Roll with it. But if we are looking for a holder that holds the film truly flat - then this is not the holder.
      I am looking at several other holders that that grab more of the film and have cross bars...you do lose the sprocket holes.
      There is also the option of getting an anti newton glass insert (about $30 - not from lomography) for the digitaliza to cure the inherent shortcoming of the holder.

      Hello I know it will not work the light has to shine through it. it's interesting to watch because the top cover has a motorized light that moves while at the same time there's a motor at the bottom attached to a motorized scanner. I'm curious what would happen if you put a thin light table on top of the film using a regular flatbed scanner. what's ridiculous is when I bought my scanner it was $180 but now looking around I see the same one going for five to six hundred bucks
