    Subscribe to Journeyman here: www.youtube.com...
Synopsis: Child labour is a huge problem in the Philippines. Children, often from rural parts of the country, are lured to the city with promises of a good job and a decent salary. The reality however is far worse than they can imagine. ABC Australia speaks to victims of the Philippines' child labour culture, and to experts on how the issue can be improved.

I suggest the government should prioritize family-centered programs like, responsible parenthood, etc.

I'm a Filipino and I'm writing about the root of child labour that has something to do with family planning, religion and parents' "poor mentality". I came across this video while doing my research. Catholic Church encouraging families to be "fruitful and multiply" - from weddings, christening, birthdays, property blessings are all sources of money making to the church. Couples who can't even afford to put food on the table relies on "bahala na si Lord" which means leave it to the Lord whatever will be their future is. So they took chances to build families when they can't even afford it. Hence, resulting to this - the children suffers. Children can't say no to parents - parents keep telling their kids that they are poor and they have to sacrifice for their parents. This kind of mentality carries on from the eldest working for the family to supporting themselves to go to school then supporting the rest of their siblings to go to school until everyone finishes school or find another job to support the family. So they end up either finishing school or working for the rest of their lives while their parents are telling them "we are poor, this is our fate". If this is ingrained to every Filipino youth, you will hear a lot of them saying Philippines is poor, our country is poor - yes that kind of poor mentality. Instead of striving for better future.

Agreed. Unfortunately is happening in all too many countries.
Some other places where I know the same happens includes China and Thailand, and I am sure they are plenty of other countries.

But I would like to remind everyone that if it wasn't for alot of the good work done by journeymanpictures alot of people would have no idea about alot of the problems faced by regular everyday people, things like this are usually not covered by the media, so JP is way above them morally and for that they have my admiration and support.

In the Philippines the Catholic church opposes the Reproductive Health Bill, which in addition to health care promotes access to family planning. The Church claims that 5 to 7 children per family is best for the PI because this provides a continuing source of “CHEAP LABOR”. Sadly part of this cheap labor involves children. Let me ask any Catholic two questions: 1. When was the last time you saw a starving priest in the Philippines? 2. What would Jesus say about Catholics promoting child labor?

I’ve watched hundreds of these videos. Especially the Al JAzeera English videos about Philippines and slums. I’ve contacted them to try to help these victims over and over but Never have gotten a response. Not once. There’s someone willing to take them out of the hell they are in and all these people care about is making and uploading the damn film.

i hate to say this. but i blame the spanish who conquered us. why? they only focused on manila, as the center of everything... trading, culture, etc.
so people from "below"(i know it's a racist term) tend to have the stereotypical belief: "life is better in manila"
-that's the main reason our city have the most homeless/poverty-rich people.

Please consider this: If you thank the Church, the priests, for the good things they do should you not also blame them for the bad things that they do? And please try to answer the question of what Jesus would say about the Catholic church promoting child labor? If you had experience with a kind priest from Europe I am happy for you. But don’t thank the church for what a good man did for you unless you can blame the church if a bad priest does something bad.

Think of those children. Should there be no jobs in mining, they will be dying due to starvation. They are yet better off by working in those inferior conditions. Those 50 businessmen gaining from mining at least buy some products such as clothing, real estate and thus at least some Filipinos have jobs and can afford to buy food. Compare that to a situation where those mines are not utilized at all.

How do you think they'd do that without supplies of condoms and pills?? Hindi yun ganun kadali para sa kanila. Wag puro salita, samahan mo ng gawa. Hindi makakatulong ang hate. They need true concerned fellowmen.

@FiIipinoUnggoy Everyone has a tendency to boast for no good reason. In the Asian world it is done to save face. Then when someone finds out, they generally get angry at themselves for looking weak. It has nothing to do with you other than you saw their weakness. At least it's not like in China, where if it happens they will retaliate and turn it around, aimed at you. From my own experience, that is a brutal thing to have to go through. It has the ability to ruin lives.

Poor people, can either actually struggle for a living, and then there is some that just sit on the ass all day not caring that they have a job or not. You can easily go get a job. And guess what, what if they want to have children? You don't have the right to say "their 2 stupid 2 get birth contol" it's their discision, but im not saying it's a good one, but maybe they always wanted kids or something. so your in no place to be calling someone stupid.
