- San Francisco Japantown, also known as Nihonmachi, is a vibrant and culturally rich neighborhood located in the Western Addition district of San Francisco. It is one of the last three remaining Japantowns in the United States and serves as a hub for Japanese-American culture, history, cuisine, and community.
Spanning several city blocks, San Francisco Japantown offers a unique blend of traditional and contemporary Japanese influences. The neighborhood features a mix of residential buildings, commercial establishments, and cultural institutions that contribute to its distinct character.
One of the focal points of Japantown is the Japan Center, a large complex consisting of indoor and outdoor spaces that house a variety of shops, restaurants, and businesses. The Japan Center's Peace Plaza serves as a central gathering place for community events, festivals, and performances throughout the year.

Japantown may seem busy in this video, but if you go there on weekends, it is way more packed. Before COVID, Jtown was slowly losing customers, but nowadays it’s more vibrant than ever, at least on the weekends. I think people just took it for granted for a long time but now it’s among the busiest neighborhoods in the city. Some of the shuttered stores were family owned and they only closed business due to retirement and not necessarily because of the economy.
I can see why people come here on the weekends!
Thx for visiting my City. I remember when Japantown opened. My dad took me to a jeweler there, and I admired a garnet ring, cut in an oblong octagonal shape. It was set on eight figure 8's in gold. Garnet is my birthstone. Five years later, on my 16th birthday, my birthday gift was that beautiful ring from Japan Town!

Gorgeous foray of Japantown! I especially like the cafe surrounding the Osaka castle model downstairs: great udon and onigiri, the matcha ice cream place and Maido and Daiso for pens and stationery.
But really every single little place there has something memorably special and I'm left just awestruck by your ability to inhabit a place so skillfully and well!!

New York City has a Chinatown, Korean town, and little Italy neighborhood, which also is a pizza branch there.
