Im a customer in Southern California searching for an interior decorator. How can i ensure the decorator doesn't upcharge on the furniture/accessories i select? Do i ask for actual invoices from the retailer? If i trust they have access to furnishings at a designer discount, i want that discount but will pay for their services/work hours.
My friend got scammed by a designer who bought stuff from HomeGoods and world market and upcharged without her knowledge!She found the exact items at these stores for less.

With all due respect, though things may be available to the public, you are paying someone to piece things together. You are paying for intellectual property of their vision. Yes, you can get the stuff from home goods and all that, but your designer had to go get it. It’s similar to DoorDash. You could go get the food, but you hired someone to pick it up so they charge for that whatever that may be. There is so much that goes into it that people do not see. Sourcing takes a lot of time. I’m not saying your friend is a liar or invalidating their experience. However, at the same time, up-charge is part of the industry and it really isn’t a scam. Just wanted to give prospective.

⁠​⁠​⁠@@svorachack1991 I was going to said the same, up charging it’s part of the business, there’s a lot to do, in that case will be a poor business without profit, in every country the designers get a profit of the items they are recommending in some cases they sell to the client directly…what’s the point to get a designer and get their discounts and complain about they are making profit for that? It’s not charity it’s a business. It’s so weird to me when clients said this things about scam or they want to know how much they paid for that, in that case go by yourself and additional pay the designers time. US clients sounds penny pincher, my international clients knows the value of.
