I've had one for just over a year now, it was a 60th birthday present to myself :-) and now that it's played in a bit it's even better. The tuners may seem a bit cheap, but they work fine, tuning stability is excellent. The one issue I've had with it was that the output jack wasn't tightened up enough and rattled a bit. 30s with a socket and that was fixed. It's noticeably lighter than my US Strat, which is nice as I'm getting on a bit (see above).

The fixed bridge variant comes with an adjustable, one-piece string though hard tail the trem version with a Hipshot Contour tremolo. (the older Carvin branded models had Wilkinson trems).

Darrell has this spot on. Bought one untested on line last month in Aqua and it looks and sounds stunning. Excellent weight/balance and the neck reminds me of an SG I used to own. I am OK with the gloss neck (which the SG also had but that guitar suffered severe neck dive) but I am with Darrell on a satin finish given the choice. The coil splits work well and give loads of sound options, albeit the single coils will never be a substitute for a Fender SC in my view. The small toggles are such a simple and effective solution to switching. Downsides? The tuner knobs look cheap although the tuners work well. The best action I can achieve I would describe as Medium (a pro set up would achieve better) without getting upper neck string buzz. There is probably a technical reason why it can’t be achieved, but I always wonder why they cannot stain the maple top edges the same colour as the veneer. Overall, I love its character and a month on, it is still my go-to guitar.

I recently purchased a Paul’s SE. Beautiful guitar to say the very least. I did a few modifications/upgrades. I did an upgrade to the tuning machines… Locking vintage tuners by graph tech. I swapped out the chrome mini toggles for black ones… It was an aesthetic thing. I routed out to flush-up the stock surface mounted electronics cover plate, with an upgraded mahogany plate to blend into the body. It looks so much cleaner on the back. And finally… I swapped out the stock strings for hybrid .09 to .46. It’s a dreamy guitar at a fraction of the core price.

The TCI pick ups are amazing, I feel like I can get a Tele sound, Strat sound and of course PRS sound. The birds are beautiful, I get many compliments on the tone and looks.

Wow, the splits sound fantastic, and really don't seem to lose much volume. The thing I don't like about my PRS is only having one volume- I like to work with the shades of different volumes between pickups in the middle position a la Jimmy Page- although this electronic setup on this guitar addresses that to some degree. I also like more control over intonation than the PRS bridge offers. Great guitars though.

I know that when Paul built me my 3 PUP custom guitar they had to call in a wiring expert since they did not know how to wire up my custom setup of bridge, bridge/middle, middle, middle/neck and neck plus coil tap for all three PUPs. I interviewed Paul once when I was with Artistforum dot com and asked why he wired up the Santana 1 the way he did and he answered that was the only way he knew at the time. I really wish PRS could do mini-toggles with single/off/full configurations.

Adjust the PRS neck pickup screw poles into the same stagger pattern as your Strat and then re-test. The Strat dynamics come from that classic "EQ" setting. The PRS having all flat screw poles effectively gives a 'scooped mids' tone.

The second one PRS sent me was great. Just as it should have been. I've changed the tuners for lockers and swapped out the pickups, they were just too bland for me. I went for Pearly Gates and now it is the best guitar I own. The one thing they don't tell you about this guitar is how much it sustains. It just rings and rings, even unplugged. the whole neck and body vibrate in such a resonant manner. Just fantastic.
