I have a 1978 350SE Aut. I have always thought that my Merc is a 3 speed automatic since it only shifts two times. My mechanic told me that my car always start on the second gear and that the first gear is never used until you use S or L. Bring it.

My 3590se is a 4 speed aut but it always starts in the 2nd gear. The first ones from 72 or erlier had a 3 speed aut.

You have less noise on the highway because an automatic has a 3 gare and the manual has 4. And it's faster. It shifs very well.

I think your right - my 300TE does the same. Early and late 350's have 4 speed auto. The rest have 3 speed.
I have 1971 SL350 with 4 speed manual gearbox and it does everything you "tell" it to do.
