I bought a Solterra back in June 2023. It's been one of the hottest summers I can recall here in Texas, USA, and the A/C runs all the time. So far, my average (lifetime) efficiency is 3.8 miles/kwh and sometimes I get close to 5mi/kwh on a given charge cycle. When I turn the A/C off, my car shows a range of nearly 300 miles when fully charged. I have yet to see what it's like in cooler weather since we are still in the heat of summer/early fall. I only run short trips around town, and for work. Usually only 15-20 miles a day. Sometimes I can go 2 weeks between charges. I'm a commercial photographer and the space in the back for carrying cameras, lighting and grip equipment, cases and cases of light stands, etc. on to location shoots is fantastic. My previous car was a 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R and the new Solterra feels similar in many ways when driving, but even more nimble when parking etc. I really enjoy all the safety technology in the Solterra. I have never yet charged the car anywhere besides at home. I did get a Level 2 charger installed in my garage, and this allows for easy overnight charging. I agree the interior could be nicer, but it's really not bad. I definitely do not feel as though it's "cheap". None of the Subarus I have owned have ever felt particularly luxurious, but they just function well. Price? Well, I suppose it's all relative. I was offered a very nice trade-in value for my Outback and was given a sizable discount on the new Solterra so when I compared the cost to just buying a 2023 Outback, there was not that much of a difference. The Outbacks were not being discounted at all. I think with any EV, it's important to understand what they can and cannot do, and decide if it is a good fit for your needs. In my case, the Solterra thus far has been perfect. I would not recommend if regular long trips or daily commutes are your use case, however. Cheers!

I put down the deposit for a Solterra here in the Eastern US, but after the Out Of Spec's 0 to 100% charge test where it wouldn't even get to 100% after more than 4 hours I nixed the order. I'm looking at an IONIQ5 for my next car - you can't beat the 800 volt charging equipment in the car. It's such a shame because we've had two Legacys and two Foresters (so we're fans of Subaru) but it does feel like Toyota shafted them.
The new CEO of Toyota is keeping with the odd decision. It's basically: "we're not going with EVs because the infrastructure isn't EVERYWHERE, so we're going with hydrogen and the infrastructure isn't ANYWHERE..."
Toyota betrayed Subaru. The best thing that Subaru could do now is work with other suppliers, get the best battery packs and high-voltage guts in their new cars, and develop their own standard away from Toyota's e-TNGA platform.

I confess right up front that I am an experienced Toyota Hybrid user, so to avoid being bored, you may decide not to read on: I pre-ordered a bZ4x in March 2022. Took delivery in December. Now done 2,800 miles. Today, (Sunday, April 2nd) as the sun finally came out, we took our dog to a park for a walk and a nice cup of coffee and cake. A 30 miles round trip. ‘A’ roads. Temperature 11C. Climate set on 19C. The car did 3.7 miles/kWh going (60% uphill) and 4.5 miles/kWh return (60% downhill ;). That’s a true average of 4.1, but let’s assume I’m over-egging it a bit and use 3.9 miles/kWh. Now, let's also use EVM’s stated 60 kW usable battery to allow for ‘charging losses’, (not 64). 30 miles / 3.9 = 7.69 kWh energy consumed. 7.69 X 7.5 pence/kWh = 58 pence for the trip. 58 pence / 30 miles = 1.9 pence per mile. Furthermore, 3.9 average miles/kWh X 60kW battery = 234 equivalent miles. Without worse case, 4.1 X 64 = 264 miles equivalent range. Even I wouldn’t claim to actually achieve that on a trip.
I’m really looking forward to the improvements Toyota will make in May when, in optimal temperatures of 22 - 24C, I think the equivalent of 270 miles will be achievable.
So, did my boring hybrid experience lead me to make a wrong decision in March 2022? Well, if you take into account I got my Finance at 4.9% APR, (now 8.9%), zero road tax, a free charger, servicing 47% less than ICE, 3 years pan-european roadside, 10 year Toyota warranty, 1 million km battery warranty, Oh and some direct information from Toyota to help understand EV technology, I’ll leave you to decide. 🙂

I have replaced my Foresters with a Skoda Enyaq IV80x, with which I'm truely impressed. Yesterday for instance at short notice, (not a full battery) I took the box trailer & collected a couple of large wheels for an industrial loader, no problem, it was a most pleasant experience. Subie's are usually good 'farmer's cars', in that they are roomy, 4WD, and (usually) keep going. 20 years ago they were rot-boxes,, but then so were most cars! - and the flat four engines were prone to blowing up. Depending on how much room there is in the back with the seats down (can you lie down and use it as an emergency tin tent?) I think 30K would be marginally too much.

You mentioned an update which in fact in due in May which will out some more miles back into the battery from the rather large buffer at the bottom end and milage indicator will show a percentage and also when you turn on the heater there will be less of a drop in miles available. The steering wheel is no busier with buttons than e.g. Nissan Arya. not having a rear wiper is not a problem as it doesn't really get dirty and there is a rear camera with a washer giving a live rear view. There is a sub menu on the centre binnacle which you did not mention which is operational from the steering wheel giving lots of info while driving. Most of the things you mentioned as being difficult to locate are available using voice control e.g. radio, windows, sun roof blind, heating etc. All the panel gaps are how they should be and it doesn't leak and I also get good service from my local dealership. The reversing camera beep can be deactivated at the dealership and the other bleeps can be turned off or the volume lowered in the settings. You're correct about the interior it isn't fancy but having owned many Subarus in the past I suppose I'm used to that and as you say the milage isn't great compared to some other cars which can be more expensive but is that extra expense with it for the extra miles gained. When you take into account the spec that comes as standard on the Solterra you will be hard pushed to get a four wheel drive car for that price. I don't do a lot of miles and charge at home so it suits me. I looked at other cars such as Tesla but after sales not great. Hyundai Ioniq 5 with its flat 12 volt battery problem and Hyundai have finally admitted there is a problem with the car. Having the back up of a reliable dealership and where it is located is worth a lot especially if or when something goes wrong.

Thank you Johnny, I watched EVM’s video right through because I thought he was more open minded and objective based on previous videos I’ve watched of his but It seems everybody has jumped on the hate Toyota bandwagon. I agree with everything you explain about your Solterra. I’ve got an FWD Toyota version. I was shocked by my initial energy efficiency (in December/January), but I have had great direct response and support from Toyota UK in the form of technical information and knowledge sharing. And especially in response to their reaction to the criticisms of actually doing something about it. In addition to your excellent listing of features on your Solterra, I just want to add a couple more for the benefit of adding some balance to the negativity. 1) I have heated and ventilated seats. 2) The ‘LACK’ of a glove box (that all reviewers pick up on), is that it is part of the design for the location of a radiant heater, (also one under the steering column). This will provide supplementary heat to the driver and passenger footwells. And finally, with respect to ‘range’.Yes, I was a bit unhappy with my car's initial 2.5miles/kWh in December and January (N.B. allowing 64 kW ‘usable’ battery is equivalent to ‘only’ 160 miles). But now, at the end of March, I am achieving a best energy efficiency of 3.7 miles/kWh. So if Toyota’s update releases a usable battery to say 67kW, then that’s already equivalent to 247 miles. Then, when reaching optimum battery temperatures of 22C - 24C in summer, I am confident of exceeding 4 miles/kWh (about 270 miles). This confidence is justified by a test drive I did in May last year (before recall) that achieved 4.2miles/kWh. And one more thing, why do critics compare bZ4x and Solterra to the Ariya with an 84 kW battery? The Ariya’s got a bigger range because it's got a bigger battery. I do not regret having my bZ at all. All I need to do is patiently await the update and perhaps knock back against some of these unobjective and unresearched reviews. But quite honestly, I can’t be bothered taking time to do this again.

Munroe is doing a tear down of the BZ4 at the moment and he says that Toyota have done things that he has never seen before and I look forward to seeing the remaining videos. It amazes me at the negative comments made by people who have probably never seen one, sat in one or driven the Subaru or Toyota. I don’t comment much but there are times when you feel you have to say something. Like you I’m looking forward to the upgrade and the summer weather. I hope you continue enjoying your Toyota.

Great channel but why the regular negative comments of the Mach e, I have owned a SR RWD for 9 months, it’s wonderful car, lovely to drive, 3.3 kWh winter and 4.5 in summer, really nice interior (no cheap plastic)and best of all and something you never cover is the top safety awards it has received, to quote InsideEV’s channel “Ford Mustang Mach-E earned a five-star overall safety rating from Euro NCAP, as well as a Top Safety Pick designation” “The Mustang Mach-E achieves 5 stars in both categories, and it receives positive marks for including all of NHTSA's recommended safety” only Tesla in comparable. With grandchildren and a much loved dog in the car this is surely the most important feature. I could be mistaken but as far as I can ascertain no other EV’s have achieved this top rating. Regards

It's down to Toyota's EV apathy. They threw away the biggest opportunity they ever had with the Prius. They ought to have developed and evolved that car into a full on EV years ago, but didn't. Instead they let Nissan take up the baton and develop and market the Leaf, which was basically responsible for breaking EV's into the mainstream. And now Toyota are banging the hydrogen drum, just as General Motors did over 40 years ago..... When will these people learn? It's going to take decades, and billions of pounds to get to the point where the UK has a viable hydrogen infrastructure. It's like someone now trying to trumpet the virtues of air travel by Zeppelin.....Hydrogen is neither practical nor convenient. You'll never be able to fill up at home on your drive, on cheaper rate. And if it ever takes off, then it won't be cheap either once the fuel companies monopolise it....
