    Christina from TX here; so great to see how you've organized your Oliver for full time living!!
    I belive the new fridge type has a (much) smaller freezer; don't know if there's an option to get the older type that has a larger freezer.
    We just got back from a week of camping in Oshkosh and the fridge held everything we needed (the dog stayed home!).
    We also got the Tooletries idea from Kathy Adams and agree that they are fantastic!!
    Thank you for sharing your beautiful tiny home and we're so happy you are enjoying your Oliver!!

      @@flygtjej748 Hello Christina! It’s great to hear from you! We had an absolute blast on our 14-months of full-timing in Piccolino. So many miles and so much fun. The fridge did fine for our normal day-to-day, but the tiny freezer didn’t work for Stormy’s raw food. It was easy enough to toss a portable freezer in the truck and we continued on our adventures. We’re glad to hear you’re still enjoying your Oliver adventures!

    Great tour! I love the Tooletries, I did a video about them last year on my CZcams channel on how I use them in our Oliver, they really do stick great to the fiberglass! I have a lot of organization videos for the Oliver including our new closet shelving my husband built, so much more closet space. The outside courtesy lights are definitely bright! We made the mistake of turning them all on one night when we first got our Oliver to see how they looked, we ended up with thousands of little bug inside when we open the door, that was the first and last time we turn those on!
    I’ve really enjoyed your videos especially the trip to Alaska, spectacular! Of course the star of all your videos is Stormy, so cute and what a great traveler/camper he is!
    The Oliver is such a great camper, we went from an Airstream to an Oliver as well, zero regrets!
    Wishing you many more wonderful adventures and thank you for sharing your journey.

      Thank you, Kathy! We learned that same lesson a few days after delivery in a little campground in Arkansas. Of course it was right before going to bed so instead of sleeping we spent the next couple hours smushing/zapping mosquitoes 🦟 😩. We now use them sparingly.
      Thank you for all your organization videos. We certainly took some of your suggestions, as you may have gathered from watching the tour 😉. The only thing better than knowledge is shared knowledge.

    Excellent tour of an Oliver that’s actually in active use and full of gear for 2 + a dog! And I really appreciate that your tour is chock full of great tips! As an Airstream owner it’s interesting to learn from the comments that so many Oliver owners are actually Airstream converts.
    Here’s a tip I picked up from our AS forum that relates to folks who keep a king bed permanently set up (as is often the case in AS Basecamps like ours): try using a queen sized mattress instead. The gap along the two edges of the queen mattress on a king platform can be used for stashing packing cubes of clothing, bedside “table” items, etc. We haven’t tried this in our Basecamp yet, but it makes a lot of sense to me. If we wind up with an Oliver, this may be a good solution for us, given that it appears interior storage in the Oliver isn’t particularly copious.
    One question, please: did I understand there is an external stowage on the other side of the Oliver as well? I believe “Mr. Hard Alee” mentioned there is room for two more big translucent plastic storage bins (like the one he showed) on the opposite side, i.e. external bays for stashing gear both to port and starboard. Thanks!

    • @HardAleeAdventures
      @HardAleeAdventures  Před 8 měsíci +1

      That’s a great hack! Between the tooletries and a rope basket on Kelly’s side, it suffices, but more storage is always better 😉. We keep it a king strictly for comfort. We were pretty cramped in the queen in our AS since the prince (Stormy) is spoiled and sleeps with us 😆. For those that would be comfortable with a queen, yours is a terrific idea. We have two large storage bins under the street side of the bed, which gives us some needed additional storage. You just have to keep them narrow enough to not restrict airflow to/from the furnace.
      There is an outdoor storage access to the “garage”, as we call it. We have two larger (wish I could remember the sizes) and two smaller bins in that area plus a yoga mat and a couple sets of resistance bands, so not palatial, but definitely some extra space for things you don’t need access to daily or use outside. We put snorkeling gear and wetsuits in one, bags of dog food in the other and the small ones hold some spare parts and dehydrated coconut coir for our composting toilet.

    • @earth2wendy
      @earth2wendy Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@HardAleeAdventures Thanks so much for the additional details about how and where you stow your gear. Good to know. One thing I’d miss in switching from a Basecamp to an Oliver is the back door, which gives us access to gear stored under our (permanently set up) bed from both ends. But if those bins under your bed are accessible by sliding them out into unobstructed floor space, as they seem to be, that’s not too bad. Might be good to keep an “aft bin line” laid out at the ready (perhaps clipped to the aft end of the forward bin) to help haul the aft bin forward when you need it. (A “tug” job for Stormy?) Thanks again.

    • @HardAleeAdventures
      @HardAleeAdventures  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@earth2wendy using some cordage for the second one is a great idea! Ours are plastic drawer-type bins, so not ideal for the back one, but makes the front one extremely easy to access. The pull on the handle of the second drawer would definitely make things easier, and fun for Stormy.
      We actually looked at the Basecamp 20X on our shortlist when we were downsizing, but decided to go with the Oliver. The rear door is definitely a nice feature.

      @HardAleeAdventures  Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks for watching the two you have 😉. We considered twins for about a second. I’m 6’3” (Jason), and when I tried one out (thank you Christina), it felt uncomfortable for my height. We also prefer sleeping in the same bed, so converting the standard into a king is far more comfortable for us.

    • @grumpychoi
      @grumpychoi Před 6 měsíci +1

      Ok. I get the height part. I am 6’, so maybe not an issue. I get the same bed thing as well. I actually liked the queen bed we used to have. too much room on the king sometimes. 😂. I asked because i see a good portion of these being sold as twins. i guess because of the walking space between. thanks for responding. I plan to go to Part Time in a few months in my current job and will start my searches of what we want to do then.

    • @HardAleeAdventures
      @HardAleeAdventures  Před 6 měsíci

      @@grumpychoi there are definitely more sold as twins, and most are not full-timers. The benefit to the twin is definitely the walkway between beds and ability to use them as kind of a couch for lounging. The benefit of the king is the space in the bed for two large humans and (now) two dogs and it allows us to use half the space under the bed (the walkway in the twin) for storage. One of our biggest complaints with Oliver is poor storage, so every opportunity to find more storage space is important to us. Part-timers don’t feel that pain as acutely since they have a home base to store their seasonal gear/clothing. We carry four seasons of clothing and gear everywhere. I think new owners will find solutions for whichever floor plan they choose. One thing some new Oliver friends mentioned that we hadn’t realized that modifying from standard (king bed) configuration to twins was simple, albeit at a cost. This gives some additional flexibility.

  • @BrianAz
    @BrianAz Před 3 měsíci +2

    This is the trailer we want! Our ONLY two complaints are the refrigerator and the microwave. We are concerned that the size for the refrigerator is just too small and if they would delete the microwave from its current location and make a taller refrigerator, we would be able to eliminate that concern. We would rather have a regular microwave in one of the cabinets in the kitchen area. Obviously, Oliver won't be able to do anything like that for us. Sooooo with all that ranting, how do you guys get along with the size of the refrigerator ( if you did not have the extra portable frig and freezer) and for how does it work out without the extra portables? Is the frig inside just too small? We realize we have the back of our truck and the back seats of our Super Duty crew cab for extra "stuff" but as brand new to all this, we worry we are going to miss something important.

    • @HardAleeAdventures
      @HardAleeAdventures  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Thanks for your questions. The fridge & microwave were an adjustment, but doable. The microwave is also an electric convection oven, so the only oven in the Oliver. Although it wasn’t used often, it was nice to have the option when plugged in and it did get some infrequent use. The fridge is small and can be challenging to fit enough food in for a week, but it can be done. It takes more cautious meal planning, but you can get used to it. Initially, one of our portable freezers was unused and the other was just for Stormy’s frozen food. Eventually, we had an epiphany and plugged it in and secured it under the dinette. That gave us plenty of extra room (mostly for the fish I was catching). All this is to say it is doable as is, with some possible changes in eating habits (e.g., we got fewer greens more frequently and went from fresh pasta to dry) and more planning. Because we feed our dogs frozen food, we couldn’t have done without the extra portable and both were only used when I’d filled them with fish. The fridge is certainly small and the freezer is almost nonexistent, but one can make do. Pretty much everywhere we traveled, we could just shop a bit more often. When that wasn’t an option, we stocked up on non-perishables and even went as far as to eat some canned veggies. Unless you’re a gourmet chef not willing to occasionally make-do, the fridge is manageable for a couple to (usually) eat (pretty) well. We hope this helps.

      @@HardAleeAdventures Thanks for the response! Big help and there is nothing better than a first handers experiences in any RV. We have seen plenty of sales walk throughs but they and all fluff. Nice to see one lived in and modified to live even better. The refrigerator is going to be something we just have to take a chance on, I guess. Taking your advice on adapting will have to do. I am used to 8cf of frig space sooo... yeah, I have to adapt. My wife and I still have not seen one in person so that is the next step. Half the fun ins shopping so we are going to have fun with this. Thanks for taking the time to write back, few ever do. Happy trails!

      @HardAleeAdventures  Před měsícem

      @@BrianAz we’re happy to help with any information you need. Being able to reply to the comments is what makes opening our videos to the public more fun. Stormy was a big factor in needing the portable fridge/freezer, which fits perfectly under the dinette or with in the back seat of the truck. He eats frozen, raw food, so the minuscule freezer space (think a tray of is cubes and maybe a pint or two of your favorite ice cream) wasn’t going to work. I didn’t turn on the second freezer until filling up the first with fish in Alaska. Were it not for Stormy, we could have gotten by with just the Oliver fridge by shopping more often and only having what we needed for the upcoming week…but, having some extra space for frozen goods in “Stormy’s freezer” was a bonus. Have fun shopping, get your camper, have adventures and figure out the rest along the way. Cheers!

They are now selling through a handful of dealers across the country and I’m unsure what the current base prices are. A quick search showed a couple available 2024 tandem axle versions (Legacy Elite II) in the $95,000-$106,000 range. Basically, they are trailers with a quality that, in my opinion and having owned both, exceeds Airstream at a slightly more reasonable price-point.

We find the Oliver is the better tool for what we wanted to do, but the Airstream was far more comfortable when stuck inside. All depends on your personal needs and how you plan to use them. There are no gaps or holes they can crawl into, so keeps out the pests. The worst intruders we’ve had were a few ladybugs that crawled under the sweep on the sliding window screens. I’ll take them over mice or chipmunks any day of the week.

      Great question and helpful answer! Our Airstream Basecamp has definitely had its mouse problems. We tried everything-screening over the refrigerator vents, stuffing/covering the frame tubing with metal at the open ends, lots of traps, etc., and still had mice. In the end it took adding layers of Gorilla tape to fill in the wide gaps between the outer plastic wheel well trim and the plastic wheel well lining to seal them out (but for how long??). It’s annoying when a high-end rig is so porous to mice. We’re considering an Oliver, so here I am, and this excellent tour along with your answer on the topic of mice are really helpful to that process. Thanks!

    I really like the construction of an Oliver Trailer but for me to considerate buying one it would need to be a few feet longer and include a dry bath.

      It is such a Catch 22. The nimbleness of the Oliver is great for so many reasons; but, admittedly, a dry bath and a bit more room would be nice at times. Everything comes with trade-offs, but this works for us…for now.

    Hello from Australia 😊 just wondering what the cupboard door fronts up top are made from? Is it Perspex? I have a vintage Olympic debonair fibreglass caravan which is rather similar to your Oliver but mine is 1968 made 😅 love your van

    I am curious what you think for the Mattress, is it comfortable? How expensive is the kit?

    • @HardAleeAdventures
      @HardAleeAdventures  Před 5 měsíci

      With the Froli Zona system, stock cushions and a 4” foam topper it is very comfortable. The Froli Zona can also be adjusted for stiffness in key areas. The Froli system was just under $700 and the foam topper was around $100. It was well worth upgrading for full-timer comfort and no worries about condensation under the cushions since the Froli system elevates it off the fiberglass.

    I would like the stove burners to be side by side instead of one behind the other. I love to cook and this stove configuration would be a deal-breaker for me. Can you get the Oliver with a casette toilet instead of composting?

    • @HardAleeAdventures
      @HardAleeAdventures  Před 9 měsíci

      The stove configuration certainly took a bit of getting use to, but we’re making it work. Putting them side-by-side would further reduce the already small prep area. Going small cones with compromises, but worth it to us.
      A cassette toilet is not an option. Either a standard toilet or a composting toilet. We prefer the composter over the black tank. A cassette could likely be retrofitted if one was so inclined. From years of compost toilet use between this camper and our boat, we wouldn’t dream of going to a cassette instead. With the two of us, the urine has to be emptied pretty much daily, which is pretty benign and can discreetly be done in any bathroom or pit privy. Since there’s no diverter in a cassette, it can get pretty malodorous and isn’t easy to be discreet with due to the size of the cassette. Having used all varieties in boats and RVs, our preference continues to be composting toilets for boondocking. If you camp solely in RV parks, the standard toilet and black tank is likely the best choice since it doesn’t require as frequent emptying. Solely our opinion and preference. Some might prefer a few Wag Bags laying about 😉.

    • @earth2wendy
      @earth2wendy Před 8 měsíci +2

      On the topic of “separator” toilets, there’s a new option that’s working well for us called a Trelino. It’s self-contained so can never leak even if the urine bottle is overfilled, is much cheaper than a Nature’s Head or Airhead and doesn’t stir the solid matter, so doesn’t have a stirring mechanism which in turn requires lifting a big bin outdoors to empty it. Instead, liquids divert to a bottle in the front part of the box and solids drop to a lined waste can in the back. So it’s easy to just lift out the bag containing solid waste and toss it in the trash. If you’re boondocking you can layer solid waste with sawdust to stretch the number of days before needing to find a trash receptacle. Unlike a Nature’s Head, the lid has a rubber gasket to seal any potential odors inside. We’ve tended to just toss our “solids” bag daily, so no worries. If you really want to, tho, you can retrofit the box with a fan, but it isn’t pre-designed for one. The Trelino is an attractive, free-standing box that comes in three heights and can also be used as a seat. Once we saw it, it was a no-brainer for us-no wiring! No bulky waste bin to empty! We pulled the marine head from our Airstream and had replaced it with an under-$400 Trelino within days. And boy, do we like it. We like that we can leave it inside while we shower, or set it outdoors, thus reclaiming a fair amount of floor space over the original shower set-up with its built-in flush toilet. It also means we don’t have to deal with black water dumps and can save our precious water for other uses. Something for folks to consider as they weigh flush vs. cassette vs. stirring composter vs. simple bucket vs. no toilet at all!

      About that stove configuration, the raised glass top serves to protect the bed from spatters too. About counter space, one Oliver owner said they had Oliver attach a matching fold-down counter extension to the right end for added prep space. Seems that should be an offered option if not already standard-?

    How would you compile this after owning both an, a stream and Oliver?

    • @HardAleeAdventures
      @HardAleeAdventures  Před měsícem +1

      I would say the Airstream is more iconic and sexier with its shiny skin and in all other ways the Oliver is a higher quality, better built trailer. Neither are perfect, but the Oliver was better suited for the adventures we wanted to take it on. We lived full time for about a year on each. When parked in moderate climates for long durations, the Airstream was more comfortable thanks to it being larger. For long distance travels with shorter (under a week) stops in harsher climates, the Oliver was better thanks to its diminutive size and superior insulation.
