The Curse of Monkey Island
Lyrics:
Haggis: We're a band of vicious pirates!
Edward: A sailin´ out to sea.
Bill: When you hear our gentle singing...
Haggis: You'll be sure to turn and flee!
Guybrush: Oh, this is just ridiculous.
Guybrush: Come on, men! We've got to recover that map!
Bill: That pirate will be done for, when he falls into our trap!
Bill: We're a club of tuneful rovers!
Haggis:We can sing in every clef!
Edward:We can even hit the high notes!
Haggis:It's just too bad we're tone deaf!
All: A pirate I was meant to be!
All: Trim the sails and roam the sea!
Guybrush: Let's go defeat that evil pirate!
Edward:We know he's sure to lose, ´cause we know just where to fire at!
Edward:We're thieving balladeers.
Haggis:A gang of cutthroat mugs.
Bill: To fight us off ye don't need guns!
Edward:Just really good ear plugs!
All: A pirate I was meant to be!
All: Trim the sails and roam the sea!
Guybrush: All right, crew, let's get to work!
Haggis: Our vocation is a thing we love, a thing we'd never shirk.
Haggis: We'll fight you in the harbor.
Bill: We'll battle you on land.
Edward: But when you meet singing pirates...
Guybrush: They'll be more than you can stand.
Bill: Ooooh! That was a good one!
Guybrush: No, it wasn't.
Guybrush: Less singing, more sailing.
Edward: When we defeat our wicked foe, his ship he will be bailing!
Bill: If ye try ta fight us...
Haggis:...you will get a nasty whackin´!
Edward:If ya disrespect our singing´...
Bill: ...we will feed ya to a kraken!
All: A pirate I was meant to be!
All: Trim the sails and roam the sea!
Guybrush: No time for song! We've got to move!
Bill: The battle will be long, but our courage we will prove!
Bill: We're a pack a´ scurvy sea dogs.
Haggis:Have we pity? Not a dram!
Edward:We all eat roasted garlic...
Haggis:...then sing from the diaphragm!
All: A pirate I was meant to be!
All: Trim the sails and roam the sea!
Guybrush: I´m getting so sick of you guys and your rhyming.
Haggis: We´re ready to set sail, through the cannons need a priming.
Edward: We're troublesome corsairs!
Bill: And we've come to steal your treasures!
Haggis: We would shoot you on the downbeat...
Edward:...but we have to rest five measures.
All: A pirate I was meant to be!
All: Trim the sails and roam the sea!
Guybrush: Stop! Stop! Stop!
Bill: The brass is what we'll polish and the deck is what we'll mop.
Guybrush: You say you're nasty pirates...
Guybrush: ...scheming, thieving, bad bushwhackers?
Guybrush: From what I've seen I tell you...
Guybrush: ...you're not pirates! You're just slackers!
All: A pirate I was meant to be!
All: Trim the sails and roam the sea!
Guybrush: We'll surely avoid scurvy if we all eat an orange.
Haggis: And...!
Haggis: ...um...
Bill: Well...
Edward:...err...
Bill: Door hinge?
Edward:No, no...
Bill: Guess the song's over, then.
Haggis:Guess so.
Edward:Okay, back to work.
Guybrush: Well gee. I feel a little guilty, now. - Hudba
A genuine masterpiece. The art style. The script. Everything. Orange.
An interactive song in '97. Now that was innovative.
The beauty of LucasArts, to stay crafty and creative.

"You say you're nasty pirates, scheming thieving bad bushwackers; from what I've seen I tell you you're not pirates you're just slackers"
Guybrush has some excellent flow here.
When our foes see us coming, they turn and run in fear!
23 years later and I'm still humming this tune.
still on my playlist too
To be honest, I forgot about this part, and just got it a few days ago after discovering it on Steam a week or so ago on the summer sale and thought "How could I forget this?!"
I loved this game so much. I need to go replay the series on steam once I finish Return to Monkey Island.
@Nolen did u finish return to monkey Island? What u think?

I’m so sad they abandoned this art style.. it’s so unique and iconic.
I'll be playing it again once I have my gin and tonic!
*bouncing*
You should take a look at the Deponia series, if you like that art style and the humor :3
@@Drako999x Those games are much more recent so I'll feel less like a boomer!
*bouncing*
Escape and Tales did a decent job translating this style to 3D IMHO, and the special editions of the first 2 games were also in a style similar to this game.
@@Drako999xDeponia is too much 2000s gamer cringe for me
The best part is how proud Guybrush looks with himself when he delivers the orange line.
The part that had me laughing out loud is when Guybrush joins in; 3:15
"You say you're nasty Pirates,
Scheming, thieving, bad bushwhackers.
From what I've seen I tell you
you're not Pirates, you're just slackers!"
Guybrush: "Dammit... you've got me doing it!"
A PIRATE I WAS MEANT TO BE!
TRIM THE SAILS AND ROAM THE SEA!
I love his face like "wait, what is happening right now?"
It's better if you do that as your fifth choice, because then Guybrush makes the face at 2:25 right after he stops singing, like "AACK! I'm doing it now!"
My favourite verse is "If you try to fight us, you will get a nasty whakin', if you disrespect our singing, we will feed to you to a kraken"!
Cuthroat Bill's enthusiasm delivering that last line is amazing and has me in stitches.
Fun fact: Haggis McMutton is voiced by Alan Young, who was also the voice of Scrooge McDuck!
I knew that voice sounded familiar!
"The rhyme may not be perfect, but I'm also up for porridge!"
A pirate I was ment to be trim the sails and roam the sea!
And so it has been proven that you can work out with orange
The song was terminated
And that was so premature
We just will keep it going
Turn those writers to manure
A pirate I was meant to be
Trim the sails and roam the sea
Sporange is also an acceptable rhyme

Too many people playing around with their jar of dirt.
I remember the first time I got to this part. I was a kid, playing the harder extra puzzle game. It took me at least a month to finally start building my crew. At that time, I hadn't played the other Monkey Islands so I didn't fully comprehend how irreverent and anti-climactic the games could be.
So finally, I finally get my ship and recruit all my pirates. Went through every dialogue, enjoyed these pirates in the barber shop and was super hyped to get the ship. I had no idea what there would be, excited to find the new islands and push through the plot.
Then... I get on the ship... and this happens completely stopping the entire momentum and plot. I was so confused, then the dialogue options started and watching Guybrush get more and more annoyed...
God, I was laughing so hard my dad and brother ended up coming in (they had dropped off the game before the ship) and we were all belly laughing the whole time. My dad had to call my mom in and I had to reload a save to right before it started. Good fucking times.
Your family sounds great.
Sounds amazing!
I love this! That's a fantastic memory! It resonnates with me because I also had a lot of family-bonding moments playing LucasArts-games with my dad and my brother. I remember coming home from school and my dad had figured out a difficult puzzle that we were stuck on for ages in Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis, and the whole family was excited as he demonstrated the solution. We still talk about these games. LucasArts was really something!
@@jannemarie that's awesome! I've never met anyone else who had the same family bonding over Lucasarts games like this (other than my siblings and parents, obvi)!
We played most the Lucasarts games too, we basically had time slots for turns and my parents had rules like we couldn't watch anyone further than you are, and my dad (who was the puzzle solver like yours lol) would only help us kids after we slept on the puzzle. I know Fate of Atlantis had lots of moon logic puzzles so my parents helped more often on that.
But the main one we talk about, and I had an experience like yours was the Dig. I dunno if you played that one, and don't wanna spoil if not, but my mom stopped playing her own game and just watched and helped my dad. So there was a puzzle about making a trap, they apparently stayed up all night trying to figure it out lol. I remember the next day, my dad told us kids that when we get to a trap puzzle if we can't figure it out in ten minutes he'd show us so we didn't waste our time haha
I remember the first time I played the game and didn't understand English well enough (especially in verse) I was as annoyed by this part as Guybrush is in this scene. But now, I think it's just simply genius.
I can't understand how I missed this. I have really never seen this part. I guess you can miss it?
@@countluke2334 If you played it in a different language, it's possible this entire sequence was skipped. I remember this scene caught me be surprise when I replayed the game in English, because it surely wasn't there when I played it in Italian as a kid. I guess it was really difficult to translate, sing, and mix with the music, to the point that the localization team simply said: "whatever, let's skip it".
@@robertoallegra Well, that explains why I didnt remember this at all. I guess is also missing from the Spanish version

@@rgerber MI4 wasn't that bad - it was the worst of MI series but in the grand-scheme of all adventure games, it is still pretty high up! The controllers were bad, but the story is great and the puzzles are fun and challenging
This song taught me that "pirate" rhymes with "pirate".
We know he's sure to lose cause we know just where to fire it
He says "fire it".
And orange rhymes with... err.. door hinge.
sad thing is of all the crews guybursh has had these three where the best
One started a mutiny, one was sailing in circles(If you count Dredd as a crew) and one had a habit of crashing the ship.
So yeah, they were really the best.
WJZAV don't forget the one crew member who heavily relied on guybrush to point on the map just to get anywhere(Winslow)

I could listen to this all day ... every day
Something just dawned on me about the song. One of it's purpose right here in the game is that it's a tutorial for the sword fight mechanic in the game.
In a way the song teaches the player how pirates will respond to what you choose in dialogue in a fight, since you are essentially fighting the crew to get back to work. You are shown that the way you want to respond with someone you're in a fight with is a way that they're unable to rhyme with what you've said back at you. So when you mention orange, which is notorious for being hard to rhyme to. You win the fight and the pirates get back to work. Brilliant game design!
huh... never saw it that way, but by the time i played this i already had played 1 and 2 so i was familiar with insult-fighting. also the version i played didn´t have that song so i only learned about that part years and years later
the latin american dub cut the entire song, because they couldn't find how to translate it, or refused to sing
@@DarkMoe Same with the german version, unfortunately.
Reminds me how the Bone Song in Monkey Island 2 winds up being a clue as to how you navigate LeChuck's fortress later on in the game.
I was wondering why I hadn't seen this scene in my Spanish game, and turns out it was CUT in all non-English translations. How the rest of the world was deprived of this marvel is unforgivable.
Guybrush's reaction were just priceless.
And the lyrics were just righteous!
Guybrush slowly losing his will to live may be the best part!
Such a creative idea really.
This what you get when you put Scrooge McDuck, Hefty Smurf, and Cornfed Pig on a boat.
I think that "door hinge" was a pretty fair rhyme. What about: "When we get close to that treasure we'll surely feel a twinge!". Or: Once we get that treasure, we can go ashore and binge."
When the theatre director leaves the room 0.01 seconds and you’re the only serious one...
This scene and Woodtick from MI2 show just how awesome the iMUSE system was - imagine being able to blend the verses together in any order depending on what the player chose....it simply wouldn't work when streaming CD audio...

The irony of this song is that Pajama Sam, which Ron Gilbert had a hand in making, rhymed "orange" with "door hinge" just a year before this game. Wonder if the guys at LucasArts were taking notes?
This was such a great game, but I remember there was always a glitch here and the patch just jumped past it so I never saw this part. How awesome.
