    Use that bush trimmer half a day every week to keep the entire area around your tent and cabin short and that will reduce the number of mosquitos bugging you with about 80%. Then consider buying a machine called Mosquito Magnet (it works on natural gas) and in an area of about 4000 square meters around you, mosquitos will not bother you anymore. That will make life so much more comfortable during spring and summer. That's how we've always done it in the North of Sweden.

  • @HollowInn
    @HollowInn Před 2 měsíci +90

    Edit for clarity: I review all types of roofs for a living. James should be using a "drip edge" metal flashing, not a metal cap flashing on the canopy side of the roof. Metal cap flashings "cap" the metal roof system where the system terminates like it does on the flush side. The cut angle of the canopy has not changed the fact that its still the "bottom end" of the roof and should be terminated as such. Install drip edge flashing underneath the roof panels like its the bottom of the roof. Ooga Booga!

    • @HollowInn
      @HollowInn Před 2 měsíci +13

      I honestly suggest going to a sheet metal shop to bend the panels you already own to your specified measurements. They bend their cuts so they look finished and aren't razor blades when handled. The panels will be the finish look as you have to treat that detail as if it were the bottom of your roof. Vertical and horizontal parapet edges are different animals.

    Before your Game of Thrones gal will move in with you, you will have to get the driveway to the homestead. Knowing this, it would make sense to allow truck to bring supplies for the build all the way there instead of constant unload truck to load quad to unload quad to carry it in setup. If/when you do the driveway, lay down a fabric liner before any stone. Otherwise the stone will continuously sink into the soil and need to add more on top. Just a thought.

  • @weewillywanka5904
    @weewillywanka5904 Před 2 měsíci +3

    Sir James the gods have foretold there will be another metal roof in your future. Please invest in a Milwaukee nibbler. It's the most amazing tool I've ever purchased for the money. All the methods you used so far to cut the metal are either too difficult or will cause your metal to rust in the case of the circular saw. It over heats the metal making the paint fail and you lose your protection from rust. It's better to sheer metal that's already been painted, hence snips or the nibbler. As I told you before I used a nibbler with a couple M12 batteries to cover an entire cabin, walls and roof.

    Use that 3 blade cutter to mulch. Instead of a sideways cutting motion, start cutting from the tops of the ferns downwards. Turns the stuff into mulch instead of leaving tons of stalks and cuttings.
    Also. you use your ladders at too much of an oblique angle so that they bend and run the risk of either folding in two or slipping backward as you climb. You need to get closer to the building. BE safe!

    For flared gable ends we always custom bend flashings that will go flat on the roof, then bend up about 1" and then come straight down the face of the Fascia boards. Then you cut your panel about 1/2-1" back using that expanded foam to seal it. This way water hits that 1" upturn and runs down to the eaves.
    Great work over all! Loving this series!

    Reconsider that roof. Engineer it so water sheds rather than pools. Panels should be clear to roof edge to shed properly. Any flashing should be UNDER as to not interfere with shedding.
    With your current roof panel ribs, you’re going to get water shedding onto your front patio and might consider gutters along that gable area.

    Great video. You won’t regret fixing the vapour barrier issue. It will save you so much heartache down the road. I would suggest installing the Vapour barrier on top of the insulation and directly below the plywood. Do not install it on top of the plywood or you will end up with condensation forming on the backside of the barrier which will potentially cause mould growth.

    Loving the build... bought a 12 mossberg in 74, still have it and it's been through hell and back. You mentioned you have it for self defence and then mentioned number 8 shot. Take it from this old trapper that has harvested many bear over the years, number 8 shot is for small game and not all of them. It's a poor choice for a bear, It will just piss it off and probably not even penetrate the hide at any distance, at a minimum use ssg, I would suggest slugs. Good Luck, I am enjoying the build. You are doing a quality job.

    Hey James, love your vids, a few things I've noticed. Your flashing is wrong on the flared end - water will get under it and rot your boards - mostly during frees thaw periods - better to trim that flashing and push it under the roofing material and under the membrane as well. I wouldnt attach a bath house to your cabin, moisture is your enemy your cabin will get mold in it especially in the spring/summer/fall. I'd build it away from your structure, that way you could have a separate woodstove in it for a sauna and to keep it warm, and also use it as a safety cabin in case your main cabin catches fire in the winter. Good luck!

    Just a thought-- you may consider leaving a shotgun loaded with buck shot or slugs rather than bird shot. Just depends on what you're defending yourself from. Bird shot can be very effective on 2 legged critters within the distances of a home but loses punch at range. Probably not the pick for bear.

    I’m a little late to watching this episode and I don’t have time to browse the comments to see if it’s been recommended.
    STIHL saw issues:
    1. Pull the screen (spark arrester) out of the end of the exhaust typically one screw holds these in. Then burn off the black deposit with a little torch to let that thing breathe again. This will have to be done periodically.
    2. Ensure air filter is clean
    3. Inspect spark plug replace or clean deposit off if necessary.
    4. Always burn high octane ethanol free fuel in the small engines.
    Hopefully this will save a trip to town in the future and a bill.

    *The Mossberg 10 Gauge is a classic masterpiece of a shotgun. 👍🏻Their 12 gauges are excellent as well. I can already see your logs are slowly compressing together over time. When you had just completed the walls the gaps between logs was huge, but now you can plainly see a lot less light is penetrating between them. Your chainsaw won't start because you parised Oden, or was it Thor, once again. Thor made you forget to place joists in your floor and place the vapour barrier in the proper orientation, because he doesn't want you to complete your cabin - he wants to destroy it.*

    If i was you i would start making cover fo the sawmill now , at least before you make the bathroom extention , also a tip if you have 2 chainsaws , use the one that starts then swap the spark plug ( while its still hot ) in to the one your having trouble with , then you have ruled out the sparkplug as a possible cause of the fault , i was a tree surgeon for over 16 years, PS i mentioned the log arch in the first video you got the ATV ...just saying lol

    Your flashing should go under the panel. You put a strip of the expanding foam on top of the flashing once it is down. Then you lay your panel down. What you have now is a gutter that will eventually run water straight to your gable face boards. Not to mention, you will have snow and ice build up. If I could have attached pics of how it is done, I would have.

    You sir are an inspiration. The way you just keep pushing and building without prior experience is amazing. Another thing that is nice to see is your ability to admit error and simply fixing them and then move on. An example to young and old.
    I came in a bit late on your journey and now I am up to speed with episodes and have to join the club that waits impatiently for the next video.

    Alofs - It is important to rev a petrol weed whacker intermittently to avoid straining the motor. Running it continuously at full throttle can cause the engine to overheat and wear out faster. Intermittent revving allows the engine to cool down slightly between periods of high strain, which helps prolong its lifespan and maintain its efficiency.

    James, cabin is looking great. Building in northern climate is always exciting, especially when dealing with air and moisture control - warm side vs cold side of the envelope, etc. Here in Alaska, I've always turned to the Cold Climate Housing Research Center as a definitive source in how to do it right. These guys do all their building research in Fairbanks at the University and produce great research papers and how-to instructions. Hopefully they can help in your future endeavors.
