I did this mod on my recently acquired 2006 K1200s (bought Dec 2021). and the stock pivot screw broke off within a month. I bought a non-stock, high strength SS screw from McCarr that also broke within 4 months.
Appears the factory steel sleeve provides vital engineered strength to the assembly - I’ve reverted to the stock configuration after being stuck with a broken shifter and limping home in 2nd, twice. I’m currently using another (non stock) SS screw with the stock steel sleeve and bushings until new factory hardware arrives. I’ve added dry lube before reassembly, and shifting appears to be fine - although getting to neutral in very low speeds is still somewhat difficult, and impossible while stopped without shutting off the motor - the bearing conversion made this only slightly better, and still not possible while stopped with the engine running.
    Just fyi folks.

I just did this mod to my 2005 K1200S and it has improved the shifting no end. Far less cluncking when changing gears and they feel a lot more positive.
    Thanks again.

Nice job, but it would be even better if you had replaced the bolt with one that didnt have thread all the way up. It would have been a better surface for your bearings to be mating with. Great bike as well

Unthreaded bolts a must 👍 but it looked like as much play at the end on his 😣

Did this mod on my ‘06 and while it made the shift points more positive, until the engine warms up, the shift points on the dash are incorrect (seems like a half shift point off, sometimes no indication of what gear you are in), Also, finding neutral is harder when cold. I can’t understand why these problems exist because nothing was changed internally with this mod.

    Hi!
-What did you use to clean the inside of the lever?
-what did you spray on the outside of the bearings?
-what did you put inside the lever after cleaning?
-which size are the washers and the spacers?
-is it thread locker at the end?
Can’t find the kit anymore and am kind of a newbie.
    Thanks!

I have to say that I really can't remember exactly what I was using. To clean some general purpose cleaner for sure. Outer bearing ring some glue to fix that in place. Washer size I really can't remember. In the end I'm sure that I was using some thread locker.
Overall it's pretty simple to replace plastic bearing with some real ball bearings. You don't need to do exactly like I did. I'm sure that you can also find someone to do this for you when you know the general idea behind it.

Why can't BMW just make longer shifters and brake pedals, all the bikes in the 70's including Japanese had them, a friend had a BMW back then and his shifter was much longer, he still rides Beemers but doesn't have that old one any more. I can't believe how short it is on my 2009 1200rt is, some one needs to manufacture modified shifters.

Ich muss leider sagen. 🤣 Das ist Unsinn und bringt nichts. Die Schaltbetätigung der 1300er, oder eine HP-Rastenanlage wäre eine Lösung.
