  • Revisiting the Harley Benton HB35PLUS. Eyes and ears can lie however when my hand holds this neck it's like a good time all over again.

    I'm with you on the 'beginner guitar' for a beginner myth. Luckily, for beginners and pros, the choice of excellent but reasonably priced guitars is big. Loved the intro jam.

      Thanks for your comment. I really think the beginner class instrument theory should have ended by the sixties. The fact it’s 2024, and this so called class of instrument for any student in most cases is a detriment to acquiring the joy, comfort, tone, playability, sound and last but not least an inspiration to delve further into music and creativity. Nowadays with music stores closing. The option to purchase online with acquiring information and reviews is not much of an investment yet the return of playability and comfort is critical for a beginner guitarist.

      Well, I totally and vehemently Agree too about avoiding potentially Defective lesser Quality instruments for beginners but there's one other small problem: knowledge of Proper setup and then maintaining that important Setup later too. I started out in the early 90's in my late Teens with a used 1972 Les Paul Deluxe, bought from the famed Stuyvesant Guitars aka "We Buy Used Guitars" on Music Row, 48th street, NY, NY, that was probably set up (I guess?) and this was a relative "Luxury" for a beginner. Still, I didn't learn about guitar setup and maintaining it until too many years later since nobody mentioned it to me and I had not come across any Books about it yet before the Internet too. Point is, I likely unnecessarily struggled with the instrument and especially as the setup must have changed and degraded over time since bridge saddles vibrate out of place, nuts wear down and string gauges may change which will change the action height too. Some beginners, even these days with YT, may have NO IDEA about what I just mentioned.

    Your introductory jam showcases how fingers and ears can be seduced by an instrument no matter the price point. I loved the playing, editing, and the way you let me know what pedals were being employed. Most importantly it was your passion freely flowing that makes this special! Thanks so much for sharing!

      Thank you so much for watching and commenting. True, I do love sharing whatever I’ve learned through trial and mostly errors. If it gets a chuckle so be the joy of light. Duke of tone, Behringer TO800 & JHS Muffuletta. What can I say, these little boxes kick out the jams. 🧨

    Nice video and thank you for pointing out the beginner guitar label. Above all it the should be comfortable to play and well made. If you need a car to get around you don’t need a Ferrari only something that can get the job done, with guitars it’s the same thing.

      Thank you for your comment. I truly appreciate you taking the time to point an analogy to beginner guitars and automobiles. I wonder if parents would choose a beginner automobile for their children in hopes they’ll get better until they can get a Pro Automobile. 👍🏼

    I have Gibson, Fender, G&L, Ibanez, and other guitars. One of my favorites is an Indio Boardwalk 335 copy.

    The HB35+ is simply a fantastic guitar. A joy to play even if it sits quite differently to the average superstrat.

    • @lovingsguitar
      @lovingsguitar  Před 14 dny +1

      Indeed. Thank you for your comment. It's no super strat and thank god for that. It's too much of a joy simply as it it, no whammy bar, semi-hollow and still leaves money left over in your pocket for a night out at a jazz club watching some cool cat playing an ES-335. No offense to Gibson, I still love them it's just time to let guitar players not feel part of being serious about music without having to reach that so called level of Premium Top Brand Names. Rock on brother. 🎸

    Great choice and a great buy. Love that color.
    Unfortunately Thomann is already sold out for these models for the next couple of weeks (even months) !
    Once they are back ins tock I will be ordering the red color version with split-coils.

      Two friends of mine bought the HB35plus. They both are now complete Harley Benton fans now. Both these fellas have played over four decades and both agree the performance value to cost is mind blowing. While they’re other brands competing with the position HB has achieved, consumers will reap the benefits of the steady growth of improvements.

      @@lovingsguitar Very cool. I agree too. These Harley-B.´s are very reasonably priced and well made. If the sound from the pickups/humbuckers is
      not what you want to hear, there is always the option to swap them for some others, but if you crash and dent the guitar, you will not feel so sad
      if you had bought that guitar for $$ 3,000+ dollars! LOL - One of my Harley-B TE-62cc is already becoming a little "relic" from so much playing !

      Oh my gosh, that’s so deep on so many levels. First, not many know of JBU and second, I remember the first time I heard his music playing at a record store in Boston, Mass, around 1981 and asked the store clerk who is this. His texturized playing reminded me of Frank Zappa, if Zappa, would be only focused on guitar and not overly progressive orchestration. Thank you so much for such for supportive energy. Wow, I so over the moon having heard I in some way give James Blood Ulmer, Vibes. 🙏☺️

    I agree: It's not a Gibson 335. However, having the HB, would I want said 335? Probably not, though I'd be interested in the difference(s). I mean, there must be some reason for the price. But here are my 0.02€ worth of critique:
    1) The neck is a bit on the thick side for my taste (others may feel much differently). I don't dare to take material off because of stability, and I can live with it.
    2) The pod tops are too slippery to rapidly change between humbucker and split-coil. Can be changed easily and cheaply with telecaster style knobs.
    3) The bridge is close to garbage. I changed it to a full brass bridge, but at a price of 89€, which is a lot considering the price for the guitar. But it's noticeably better.
    That said, I love my HB-35Plus. Thinking back at my first e-guitar -- uh, I'd rather not. I'd saved for it quite some time back in the 1970's, and wihile I was the proud owner of an Aria Strat-style, I would no longer touch it with a six-foot pole. Times have certainly changed for the better.

      Thank you so much for your comment. So many agreeable points you touched. Though it’s not a Gibson 335. I once was the owner of a 335 back in 1998. It had a few issues, had to replace nut, the fretboard cracked, one of the volume pots had to be replaced. Later, I simply gravitated away from it completely. Now my HB35plus gives me the joy of semi hollow playing without an empty pocket of brand named pride. True, I may have gotten a poor old 335 however it was a learning moment that lingers. I’m still a Gibson fan however there is no lie about what this HB35plus can deliver. As mentioned I’m not really a fan of spilt coils however I’m considering dropping in a Gibson PAF at the bridge position. The bridge tunamatics haven’t posed an issue for me however I will agree brass does in my personal opinion has a quality worth mentioning about. Cheers my friend. 🍷☺️

    Theres definitely a lot of classism when it comes to guitar. Even though the best music has come from the poor. "Oh, thats not a fender stratocaster with 24k gold tuners?"

    • @lovingsguitar
      @lovingsguitar  Před 16 dny +2

      So true, classism is a stereotype and should not be confused with having the means to acquire ultra high quality instruments at an outrageous price. 24k gold tuners don’t any better than a decent set of Grover’s or the like at around $50 - $90. By the way the tuners on this HB35plus do the job without any concern of poor quality or performance. 🤘🏻🎸😎
