Really dig your hi hat sound. Is there a 15" set up or a set of cymbals that would get me close to the sounds your getting? Cheers!
@@hvysouldg The 15's aren't going to be as "thick" sounding as those 17's but a dark/thin pair of Zildjian Constantinoples would get you going in the right direction!
Funky President
Talking Loud and Saying Nothing
Since you've been gone or hot pants
Used to go hear Clyde play with his weekly blues and soul gig locally in the decade before he passed. He was a treasure & didn’t have star attitude. RIP Clyde.
wow I am v jealous of your weekly gigs ! Yep he was in the very top tier in my book
Dam dam dam Clyde and Jabbo style is my fav as is J Dilla's
Clyde and Jabo taught me all about "tipping" the hi hat. Coming from a rock background, i was used to shouldering the hats to get a more aggressive sound, which was great, but I found Jabo and Clyde taught me how to stay in control of my hi hat work by keeping them soft. I.e "tippin'"
this so much
Bonjour, my name is Eric. I, m from France near Paris. I, m 57 year, s old. I want to thank you for this Lesson.... Thanks, you make Lear.n this fantastic Drum.... And I m very very happy...... Merci beaucoup............ Éric Menu
You’re very welcome Eric!
one of the best youtube drums educator on these day, he deserve more like and subscriber.
Thanks bud! Means a lot.
Damn! You are one of the very few drummers that can accurately play those drum patterns. I was especially blown away when you played “Funky Drummer” and “Give It Up, Turn It Loose”. 💯
I keep coming back to these videos and trying to add these grooves to my arsenal. Can't thank you enough for this diverse and sharp content. You and Rob Brown are my favorite teachers. Quarantine is a breeze thanks to you guys.
Great stuff, as always! I'm really excited about that little "trick" for the funky drummer! Makes it so much more accessible all at once!! Thank you so much!
Wow, this the best Funky Drummer cover I've ever heard. And the recording sounds amazing, warm, dry and punchy
Excellent review and amazingly executed! You most definitely got the “soul” my friend! Lastly, you nailed the “Funky Drummer” beat at the end. I must say, clever technique for easing up on the wrist and forearm because of those continued 16th notes. Keep it up the great work!
Really enjoy your content, Jeff. It's refreshing to watch you play and teach in a space that feels so inundated with flashy, over the top chops. You share practical skills that we can all learn from. I admire your work!
Means a lot Andrew, thanks man.
Great video, awesome feel on the drums.
Dude! That was awesome! Thanks for sharing. I have so much to learn.
You’re very welcome Francisco, thanks for watching bud!
Amazing grooves !! Those drums sounds awesome !!
Thanks for watchin' bud!
Good work Mr. Randall. Integrity is everything.. inspiration is essential! cw
Man, these are deceptively tricky to pull off! They all sound awesome though, worth the effort. Great video Jeff!
Amazing drummer. You continually inspire me. Thank you.
What a great video. I enjoyed it a lot. Thank you very much!
Holy crap ... had to come back again Jeff ... just watching you feel the joy of playing is infectious. I'm not that accomplished, I just play for fun, but I do try to learn beats that are out of my comfort zone ... slowly ... and so I enjoy watching players and breaking down what is being played. I'm slowly learning Tom Sawyer and also the Rosanna Groove at present. Just really enjoy watching you on the kit ... cheers!
Thank you!!!! Awesome video. I was just noodling around on my TD25 and I wanted to recall some of the grooves my teacher showed me years ago. This is PERFECT ... plus you have notation ... thanks so much Jeff!
You’re very welcome! Have fun.
Man! I’m a casual drummer at best, and your video lessons are SWWEEEETTTTT! Thank you so much!
A million thanks for this tutorial ! :) The funky drummer hi-hat secret you revealed finally unlocked a decades old mystery in my own playing :D

It's definitely ggos to study these classic James and JB beats because they are everywhere to this day and they shaped music a lot.
Omg thank you so much 🙏 for giving a demonstration on superbad, I been having a hard time getting that hi hat pattern lol
So good Jeff!😎

This was awesome.
I would like to see content, tips and tricks about Motown Grooves from you.
Your videos are great for someone like me who does not play drums but produce songs.
Thank you.
Jeff, love your style and sound. You always look so comfortable, which is a goal I'd like to achieve when playing.
Thanks for that Angela! And thanks for watching.
Awesome content thanks bro my fav is also mother popcorn
Really dig your rendition of Funky Drummer. I feel like the quick switches to eighth notes add to the groovy-ness and swagger. 🤙 P.S. feel you on Give it up or turn it a loose as my favorite of the bunch
Good job
Very informative and well played
Much appreciated!
wooow ...you helped an ooolde Hobby-Drummer from Hannover ...Northern Germany ssssssoooo much ...THANK YOU DEAR JEFF .....
Well done, I really like your version of Funky Drummer.
I really like your style and your drum kit sounds awesome!
Thanks very much!
Great vídeo
Nicely done and your drum sounds are fat and true. Love it. 👌
Your kit sounds great!!
Thanks Frank!
Cool tuto merci.....
Your pocket is hard to beat Jeff! So sick
this is exactly what i need now!
Yes! DO WORK dude.
DANG that snare is unreal sounding!!
Dude that snare is the jam! I love those 13x6.5” drums for tighter tuning...
Great video Jeff!!
Thanks Danilo!
Jeff Randall any advice on how to improve the right feel for the song ? Specially the time placement of the snare drum
Cool 😎
Dude, how do you get such an amazing snare sound
Man that second section of the super bad groove sounds sooooo good, could keep that on repeat all day! Do not know how you get your right hand so accurate with those groups of 3 while getting the snare part crispy too 😥 I had to really think about what my right hand was doing with that! Did not feel natural at all 😂
Keep doing what you’re doing my man! Really enjoy your videos. Love from Sheffield, England!
Practice “throwing the stick” so that its dribbling off the cymbal…if the stick is doing the work for you then you can focus more on cracking the snare 🫡
Smooth and nasty. Great work man!
Thanks Solomon!
Cleannnnn as hel! You deserve tons of subs and likes. Hope you get those soon!
Thanks bud! We’re getting there.
If I'm able to play that intro as good and as energetic as you, well damn, I WOULD LITERALLY never stop playing.
Haha, dude you can definitely get there!
@@JeffRandallDrumming With your videos I'm definitely on the right track. Thanks for all of these!
All these drum breaks influenced hiphop for years. Especially funky drummer
Dude
You sound incredible
Thanks Mike!
well done! subscribed!
Welcome to the channel Marco!
You’re welcome on my channel too!!!
Hey Jeff, Prayers for Nashville and the entire planet. Great work, this video is amazing!! I was interested in your Hi-hats as they sound perfect for groove based music, when I hit the Hi-hat links they showed up as crash cymbals.
Thanks for your prayers! The hi-hats are indeed crash cymbals. :)
Hell yes
I’m working on Mother Popcorn it’s a killer. That’s a good version of that groove but I find the beginning of that song even more challenging because the hats are unrelenting ! Hard to keep these grooves nice and light. Thanks for the vid
TOP GROOVE
Awesome grooves! Can you do a video on funky fills as those are the things I struggle the most with? For example breaking down the fills you played in this video, they were pretty great!
Love that idea! I’ll put in on this list. :)
@@JeffRandallDrumming Thanks man! Looking forward to it!
I've had this playlist on my device for many years now. Here we go.
James Brown's 10 Funkiest Jams:
10. Make It Funky
9. Good Foot
8. Sex Machine
7. I Don't Want Nobody
6. Say It Loud
5. Cold Sweat
4. I Got The Feelin
3. Can't Stand Myself
2. There Was A Time
1. Mother Popcorn
I appreciate your admiration for the Godfather. And you're vicious on the skins, bro. Double or triple up on the foot and you'll be outrageous!
Great list dude!
@@JeffRandallDrumming Thank you. That's an quite an honor, coming from a connoisseur and student of such master percussionists. I listened to each of your renditions, prior to your introduction of the title and could IMMEDIATELY recognize each song. That says alot. You're amazing! A master in your own right. Keep up the great work.
@@JeffRandallDrumming I'm sure you've already heard this but I consider it the funkiest drum solo of all of James' songs, as performed by William Bowman. It's in Part 2 of the song 'I Can't Stand Myself', staring at the 4:35 mark. If you haven't heard it, it's a real treat:

Man, look at those hands... Pretty boss
Get Up Get Into It Get Involved is the groove Chad Sexton applied on Use of Time w/ 311.
Here are a few - There it is - Pts.1 & 2, Give it up or turnit a loose (Nate Smith drums studio rec:), Soul Power (Original version 1971), Talking loud saying nothing, The Payback, Give it up or turnit a loose( Live from Augusta GA 1969)
I GOT THE FEELING !!!!!
Great vid...surprised mother popcorn wasn't on there
Thanks Rich! I had “Mother Popcorn” on there originally but couldn’t get it quite right. Maybe we can do a ‘part 2’ at some point. There were so many I wanted to do but it would have made the video super long.
Very happy to have recently discovered this channel. What are some tips your would have for someone trying to improve on sight reading since thats a key component on getting gigs ( as far as im aware)
2:22 loooove that beat
Okay 6:42 was next level xD
For me the last very good !!!!!
What r u doing at 0:23 🤯 Sounds so good man!
I feel I need to drink some Jack D watching this great vid....cool man
F-U-N-K-Y....,great job
Jeff, another great video! I hope you are planning a video for the top 10 Zig drumbeats. If not, please consider =] I see a lot of the same concepts that would carry over. Cheers!
It’s in the works Brian!
@@JeffRandallDrumming SWEET!! Maybe I'm getting greedy, but how about Levon Helm?
You’re a great drummer bro
Thanks man, and thanks for watching.
Can you make a video on the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 how to use it pls lol.. your drums sounds awesome btw 🤙
If you have time, can you dig in Mike Clark stuff, it could be very nice, I think. I love the thrust album with herbie H. Big up from France
What kind of snare is omq love that crack
What’s up with the “I don’t play a lot of funk these days”??Why the heck not?
You need to join a funk band someday, too brother! 👊🏻
You are THAT good.
Doesn’t that sound like fun?
Jamming like Clide? 💥
Haha, I’d love to play in a jazz/funk kind of group out here in Nashville at a certain point to keep those softer chops up! Just gotta find the time you know? Thanks as always Jim!
🙏🏼🙏🏼
You should try the break beat on "Soul Pride" its extremely funky.
