"Free Hand" from Gentle Giant's "Free Hand" album (1975).
What an absolute nightmare of a song.. I'll be honest, transcribing and recording this was far from fun. But hey, it's here so I won't have to worry about it anymore. That middle section is crazy. People have requested this band in the past and I can definitely see why. The bassist is just insane. And he's just standing there on stage like it's nothing.
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning : E-A-D-G
Artist : Gentle Giant
Album : Free Hand (1975)
Song : FREE HAND
Bass : Warwick GPS Corvette 5A Ash - Hudba
Rest in peace tha master of bass guitar (and several other instruments)....
Ray Shulman is one of my all time favorite Bass players. Having said that, this is more than just a cover..it is a Masterclass, showing the style and deliverance of Ray's Bass playing .
Subscribed.
Thanks for the kind words and the sub! I'll admit, it was really difficult to cover this song. Ray was a legend
Ray Shulman, such an inspirational bass player, lovely! Great job there
Him and Minnear were some crazy music androids...
Thank you!
Every member of GG were crazy.
Never listened to this band, it fascinates me !
Ones you start they become a drug and all the others seems flat EEG 😂
why did i have to be a prog rock fan and a beginner bassist, this is even harder than anthem!
After listening to this tune dozens upon dozens of times off my original vinyl copy, then several live and studio CD versions over the past 45 years, it's a wonderfully refreshing experience to hear -- and see! -- Ray's bass line largely isolated from the rest.
The total melange of so many finished GG compositions was so bewildering, and Ray's bass too often thoroughly buried in the mix, that I was only partially ever aware of everything he was doing.
This is great! I'm amazed you were able to notate it at all!
By coincidence, I had coffee this morning with a musician/composer/arranger who saw GG open for Yes in Seattle in July 1976 -- the same show I saw in Portland that month -- more than 30 years before we first met.
"The Advent of Panurge," "Design," "Interview," and "A Reunion" were topics of conversation over coffee this morning.
Thank you very much David! I must say, I know very little about this band as this was basically the first time that I listened to them. I have a lot of respect for Ray for being able to write such weird basslines that still work well with the song. I'd love to see more GG on the channel, but I can't help but dread it at the same time as it's a complete nightmare to transcribe a song like this one haha!
Not an easy song to play, let alone transcribe. Great job, man. Dig the new backdrop, too.
Fun one to get your fingers around
Great job, great song, great band. Thanks for the tabs and notation. More GG!!💪💪
No problem!
More 70s prog would be awesome
Congratulations ! Perfect rendition, precise and accurate. Ray Shulman is one of my favorite bass player, I never achived to play his way, with syncopations and his clever bass lines.. Had the great fortune to see GG live in 1978, and I still don't understand how these guys played so brilliantly so many instruments... Really awesome. Cheers from Switzerland.
Thank you so much! And apparently he also played violin? jeez..
Yeah ! On that gig, he played also violin, trumpet, flute, percussion, and an amazing acoustic guitar duo with Gary Green..And some vocals too..
Love gentle giant, Ray Shulman is such an underrated talent. The more prog I see on this channel the more I love it. Hey if you're taking suggestions, Sleeping in the Kitchen by Mogul Thrash I think would be a much more fun to transcribe and play. Keep up the great work though, you've really outdone yourself with this one!
Thank you very much, Duncan!
Dude I’ve been trying to figure out this song by ear on an off for a few months. Thanks
My favourite GG tune. Marvellous rendition, well done!
Thank you so much!
This is purely amazing...wow
Now I know what I'm gonna be doing in my remaining holiday
Good luck! :)
Monster bass playing, thanks! Really clear and precise phrasing, impressive.
I saw them a few times back in the day. Ray would switch from bass to recorder to guitar to percussion to violin, and sing background vocals. Insane musicianship. Such a pity that they were easily able to start with sugary pop music and then move on to inventive prog rock, but when they wanted to transform into a sweaty rock band mirroring the punk age, it just didn't work out.
Thanks a lot! I didn't know about any of that so that's quite interesting to me..
How do you do this and avoid copyright claims? Please do answer, and, from my (another bass player) to you - REALLY NICE! :)
Thank you so much! I don't avoid copyright claims, I welcome them like anyone should on CZcams. A copyright claim is like a shield that protects you. I don't get to earn money, but my videos won't get deleted. You can't avoid it though. The content ID system is very clever and there's no way to cheat it!
@@LeoBassCovers2 Thanks so much for the explanation. Really appreciated! :)
This is really cool! I'm going to listen to Gentle Giant the rest of the day.
Jesus Christ! That's so awesome
Love it bro ty
Serious job right here. Gg man
Fantastic Brava!
Tough song but you nailed it
Weird but awesome song!
Such a complicate pieces... It is hard to imagine for me how did you get to play so well!
lots and lots of practice..
This is amazing. Please do mobile!! You rock dude, keep it up.
Well done, well played. And what a bass line!
Thanks :)
great job on this extraordinary bass line, great tabs, transcribing...
Thank you very much :)
Fantastic counterpoint composition, the bass shine in this tune and your cover is somptuous...
Thank you very much
Brilliant! A joy to watch - and i bet it's a joy to play too!
Btw, how can a video with 8600 views have 1,700,000 likes? I mean it deserves every one, but huh???
Ehm, it has 355 likes as far as I can tell
But thank you!
@@LeoBassCovers2yeah I figured it was a CZcams brainfart!
Well done!
Thanks a lot! :)
Crazy song
Yeap...
Amazinnngggg ❤ Bravooo
Thank you very much :)
I started working on this tonight. I’m glad I could switch over to a short scale bass to learn it. Once I have it down, I’ll switch back over to a long scale instrument. Thanks again for transcribing it.
No problem! I hope you're having fun with this beast of a song
I’m so glad to find this. How in the heck did you figure all this out? That is some amazing listening and transcription skills.
Hmm, there was a very good live video that helped quite a bit I think. Thank you :)
Thanks for covering some older prog.
Since we're talking older prog, may I please request Mother by Lucifers Friend? Thanks!
Okay, mad respect for the Gentle Giant drops, but what kind of picks do you typically use? I started out on Dunlop 1.14 sharps for bass picking, but I've been messing around with fender mediums lately and I'm intrigued. Just curious what you prefer.
It really depends. I have loads of picks so I'm not sure which one I used for this one. It's typically a 0.88mm dunlop tortex.
@@LeoBassCovers2 Danke. I'll 'pick' (heh) some up the next I'm at the music shop. Keep on playing brother-man👌
Mayor Of Simpleton by XTC might be a fun one
What type of pick are you using? Do you know what Ray was using? There are felt covered picks just for bass but maybe that's a very different sound?
I usually just use a Dunlop Tortex 0.88 pick :)
No idea what Ray used though
Great part. Well done. I always felt the bass could have been more upfront in GG. (And maybe with a more high tech sound -- which you gave it.)
Thank you! I guess they respected the traditional rule of keeping the bass in the back
@@LeoBassCovers2 One thing GG was not, was traditional!
Gentle Giant is the shit
Gentle giant is/was the greatest most criminally underated band ever.
H-how many takes did it take to get this without messing up the middle part??? What an absolutely fucked riff
About a million times lol
How much did your Warwick bass cost? I dream of those basses at night
I have the same one as him but in Bubinga wood. I got it at the end of 2019 and I'm pretty sure it was like $1200 but that was a pretty good deal given the shape of it since I got it locally on Craiglist. I'd expect between $1000-$1500 for a used Corvette, obviously depending on the year
@@zachpurcell8119 Oh hell yeah, thanks man, I know that price is worth it, Warwick is godlike
@@dexoutrage8434 it is, admittedly, not necessarily the most versatile bass. If you like that super mid-heavy sound like I do (and it sounds like you too), then you can enjoy using it on anything. It can take some dialing in for some stuff though
About €1300 I think. Something like that :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 damn
Awesome bass, have two corvettes myself. Great video. I do album art if anybody cares!
And I sit here learning the song. I always think things like this will be too difficult and mehhhh but afterwards rewarding to the vocabulary.
