    After 2 failed attempts 4THECRAFT is proud to present a KRAKEN DIORAMA night light/ lamp from epoxy resin and polymer clay. The lamp displays a KRAKEN Monster surfacing from the ocean to grab a sailing ship. The light shines from inside the mouth of the Kraken. I hope that you will enjoy this "how to make" video.

      I wished I could have shown you my miniature ship..I used hair for the rigging. Made one, smaller yet, using webbing from a spiders... (I do wish your rigging were proper done..anyone that sails knows). This piece otherwise is MOST EXQUISITE. Near museum quality. So glad I subscribed you, your talent is appreciated. Thank-you.
      Everytime you see a part/section where you could have improved, you will then begin to see where you could have been even more detailed. With your patience and talent, you will surprise even yourself, and surpass your dreams if desired..to be sure.

    Wow, just wooooow... As a kid, like 35 yrs ago, i've watched my grandpa making sailing ships in bottles... As to the rope ladders, he made a small wooden frame with nails around (like a simple loom frame), then used some sewing threads to make a grating, which got hardened with lacquer... In the end he cut some narrow triangles out of it... It's more work, but would look even better... He made the rigging out of threads as well...

      Thanks and I agree with you. What I dont say in the video is that my initial plan was to cover the ship and craken with clear resin. That's how I have imagined the lamp. And that's why I have made the rope ladders like this. But at the end when I have put everything in place I changed my plan and decided not to put everything in clear resin 😊😊

    It looks nice! Some constructive criticism though:
    I think that you could've saved yourself a lot of work and gone a lot more realistic if you bought a small ship model and modified it. You did a good job, don't get me wrong, but I think that a ship that had more finer details would have not only saved you work but also made the display all the more compelling.
    For the ship sails, using paper is a good choice given the scale (cloth probably would've been too thick) but you can make the sales look more stable and look like they had wind at their back if you brushed a light layer of PVA glue on the paper. I used to use this technique to make flags on small models and it keeps them in the same position while also remaining flexible.
    I would be cautious using the hot glue mold in the future with resin. Resin has a tendency to heat up a lot when drying and so at best (if it reheats the glue) you'll lose some detail and at worst, it melts the glue entirely and either leaks out or mixes with the glue.
    In applying rough water, silicone looks great because it has the right effect, but silicone is also infamous for being non-adhesive. It can be liable to detach and not really stick to anything (it's why silicone is used for molds) so honestly the best way to get that same effect is with woodland scenics white water.
    The kraken looks good, great idea on the suction cups but I question why there is a hole in the side of his mouth. Also I think an armature would've really helped solidify the clay and made the tenticales look more circular. I also think a yellowing of the teeth would've been a nice effect (I doubt he'd have pristine teeth after all he's eaten).
    You might want to consider staining the wooden base to make it look more sea-like or beach-like.
    Overall though really impressive work!

    • @4THECRAFT
      @4THECRAFT  Před 5 lety +4

      Thank you for all the suggestions and surely I will consider them. Please see my comments below:
      1. You cannot imagine how many times I thought of buying something already made and save myself a lot of time and hard work (like others do in their channels). But at the end I always end up making everything from scratch because this is what i like to do more. I am a bit crazy what can I say? 😀
      2. PVA glue on paper is a good idea although if you have noticed I have made the sails look inflated by air by making them a bit longer and then bending them to attach to the masts.
      3. I have used silicone that is used for plumbing and which is really sticky and dries quickly. Thanks for the other suggestion I may try it in future projects.
      4. What whole in the side of the krakens mouth? Or do you mean the wholes for the eyes? I have made holes for the eyes so that when the light is on you will see the krakens red angry eyes also light up.
      5. Yellowing the teeth. You are correct. Funny enough this is how I have made the kraken's teeth in my first 2 attempts but forgot to paint the teeth yellow in my third & final attempt which is shown on the video.
      Many thanks again
      😀👍

      @@4THECRAFT thank you for replying!
      1.) I get what you mean, however when sculpting large models scaled down in polymer clay I've found that the natural "wooble" I guess you could call it makes it look less realistic but I see where you're coming from!
      2.) You can still do that but the PVA glue (just a light layer so the paper soaks it in and so you can bend it into the shape you want before it dries) will help it keep its shape and give it more elasticity in case you move it or if over time things happen.
      3.) No idea that such silicone existed so good on you for finding it! I'll have to check it out for myself!
      4.) Oh I didn't know those were the kraken's eyes. Makes sense!
      5.) Haha yea I've done similar stuff before.
      Once again thanks for the reply!

    I'm confused as to why you would use a rotary tool to shape a hardened piece of clay? Why don't you just make the shape you want when shaping the clay?

    • @4THECRAFT
      @4THECRAFT  Před 5 lety +21

      Thank you for your comment. You are correct. In my case when I started the ship I wasnt sure about the shape I wanted to give it so I decided to make a general shape and then sculpt it. If I make this again I will do it your way because now I know. Sometimes when you make something for the first time you go step by step and make some decisions along the way. 😊👍
