The point of the Yeo decision is *not* about whether it was adjudicated correctly by the umpire, it's about whether the rule behind it is a good rule that makes sense, and it is not a good rule.

39:20 yeo grabs the ball and his tackled straight away= free kick
draper dives on the ball in the dying seconds and is tackled= nothing

Yeo took possession of the ball and was then immediately tackled..."dragging it in" implies that he was first being tackled and then took possession of the ball and brought it towards his body, especially if he was lying prone. Elliot was on his knees intending to take possession and make a play. He was tackled immediately. Very different things, and hence this interpretation by Margetts is disingenuous.

So for the "stoppage"/"dragging it in" dilemma, make it context based. So penalise based on context, like how the "insufficient intent" is paid. So umpires need to adjudicate whether a player is trying to get a stoppage or not. I've watched Yeo's one a good ten times over and over, he tackles the player, and then he kind of "dives" on it (not a complete dive) in order to get the ball. Liam Ryan is there so technically he could have flicked it to him, but he instead opts to take possession and then stand up. There's not much time in it, and it would have been hard to dispose of the ball when he's laying down with it.
So in this case I don't think you could argue completely that Yeo was trying to force a stoppage in a way that goes against the free flow of the game. Now he may have intended to do that and disguised it well perhaps, but that goes for so many times where a player disguises their intent to get it out of bounds and it's not paid as "insufficient attempt" because of their skill at disguising it.
Another way to get around the "too much stoppage" is to maybe introduce a rule where a "repeated stoppage" situation is handled differently to a (lack of better term) "fresh stoppage". So there's a stoppage, the ball is thrown up, and now the context is different and players know that they need to react differently.

Cmon boys , not all us eagles fans are carrying on about the free , they kicked themselves out of the game with 15 points by the third quarter , midfield got smashed yes , but could have been 5-6 up with two of their best mids out , and margetts , just a bit of commonsense is needed from the umps , seen a few calls during Carlton/Essendon game that were exactly the same but the umps used their brains and balled it up , would it happen in finals ? Of course not

NFL does that, have an old ref on the side to explain details of decisions during the game.Sometimes they call that it was a bad call, and sometimes great call

Hammer ranks could have captain/coach challenge 1 per game

    Few things to point out,
    1) to say hawthorn are the 3rd best team currently is laughable, may I remind you who they have played,
GWS in the 8 but out of form, Adelaide 15th Brisbane 13th , PA they lost, st kilda 14 and WB 11th, so they’ve beaten 5 of the worst teams currently and you call them the 3rd best team in the comp,
And 2) I love how you find the written rule for the yeo instance and to the letter of the law it is a correct decision and you back that, but with the Mac Andrew instance why not read through the book to where it says you can not hold or wrap your arms around a bloke, yes I think the decision was incorrect but to the letter of the law the decision is correct, so be consistent with your judgement

Not holding the ball by any stretch of the interpretation, but not why WCE lost. WCE lost because they got smashed in the midfield for the first 3 quarters and our forwards wasted 88% of their first 17 opportunities in front of goal. If we aren't at full strength we are not competitive.

margets on the money with hamishes pick 1, 4 umpires are enough we are struggling for umpire numbers in the lower levels why would something like that encourage lower level to go higher
