    Hello everyone! I visited 9 neighbourhoods in Seoul that are great for different types of travelers to stay in, and made a little virtual tour for people to check out each neighbourhood and decide which spot is best for them to stay at. Enjoy the video, and please feel free to ask any questions you have about staying in Seoul.

    For the first time travelers to Seoul I think Jongno is definitely the place to stay at(not just Jongno but the neighborhoods inside the old city walls). All public transit goes through that area and it's got the most culture. Also, since the neighborhood was built when there was only on foot traffic it's great for pedestrians.

    • @lostthenfound
      @lostthenfound  Před 8 měsíci +8

      100% agree. Jongno-gu is definitely the most interesting in my opinion, and also convenient like you said.

      What hotel(s) do you recommend in Jongno ?

    • @amsd1231
      @amsd1231 Před 4 měsíci +4

      @@yoru6grad That's a tough question as I have never had to stay at a hotel in Seoul so I can't really recommend a specific hotel. I suggest looking into hotels near Jongno 3 ga stn. and Euljiro 3 ga stn. Those two metro stations are close by and they cover 4 different lines. They are also close to Cheonggye stream and Jongmyo Shrine.

    I lived right in front of Jonggak station for 6 months and the location was absolutely perfect for me. You can get to so many places on foot within just a few minutes and public transport connections are great there too. Would recommend gettin a place in that area to anyone!

Your last video especially helped out especially! I'm a finance major and english is my native tongue, I'm trying to learn Korean, about Korean culture, and how I could acclimate into Korean Society, and this video really did help out with mitigating some of my costs with lodging since I'm not planning on spending a lot of time at the actual hotel/hostile.

      Thanks a lot @jonathanacolon2012! Keep up the Korean studies too! You will have a much better time if you can interact with the locals a bit when you come here! I'd search online for some listening practice at restaurants and things, because the way people speak is often a lot different than what you learn (for example, using "to give" 드리다 instead of 주다 and "to eat" 드시다 instead of 먹다).

    This is perfect. I’ll pass this video on to my wife for next summer.
    I’ve been to a couple of these neighbourhoods years ago - oh how they’ve changed! Itaewon especially. Back in the 90’s it was a bit run down. Close to the American Army base with great food, but dumpy with a lot of nighttime “establishments”
    It looks really nice now!

    Nice breakdowns! Very concise and to the point for new visitors to Seoul. As for me, I'm partial to Jamsil, but that's because it has always been my "home neighborhood" - while I may not have been around when it was just a floodplain for raising silkworms (hence the name Jamsil - "Silk Room"), I was around when it was just starting to get built up and got the Olympic facilities.

    Your content is excellent. Have you thought about adding Korean subtitles? This could help grow your channel, making it accessible to a greater audience plus allow other local Koreans to comment and share their information. As a fellow Canadian who will be travelling to S. Korea in the near future, (I hope), It would be wonderful to have a few more detailed info videos like what to try at a street market and how to get a pass and ride the transit system or how to order delivery without speaking Korean. Etiquette when entering a shop or restaurant. Drinking etiquette. These requests may be premature as I have not yet watched all your vlogs, (I'm working on it) and you may have already covered them. Consider collaborating with some Korean food tour companies where you film the tour and get more viewers for your channel and advertise for them. I would love to see your channel grow. It is an excellent change from the over-the-top sensationalized vlogs that are so irritating and are far too prevalent. Keep up the great work.

      @lostthenfound  Před měsícem

      Hey @UdatsuAdventures, if you want a neighbourhood that's not touristy at all, I'd consider staying at an area like Mapo (business district), Ichon (residential), or Banpo (residential). They are all in really central locations in Seoul, but they are quite low in tourist population. I'd avoid staying in a place like Bucheon unless you want to stay in that area for most of the trip. The subway from Bucheon to Seoul can be a hassle to deal with because it comes every 12-20 minutes or so instead of every 3-5 minutes.

      I actually regret not staying in touristy area for our first time. The language barrier can be a bit of a challenge, we found that when we were in more touristy areas, most Koreans expect lots of foreigners already, so the environment felt more accommodating which help us get acclimated to the area faster. For example dining in, most of the wait staff in touristy areas are trained to be patient and educate foreigner who haven’t tried certain food experiences before. In contrast, attempted to dine in at a BHG chicken restaurant outside of Myeongdong area and waitress was super rude, would flash her phone with Papago app on our face real quick I couldn’t even read what she was trying to tell me. But could sense she wouldn’t let us dine, so we just left.

      I'd say on the weekends it'll be a lot harder, but it's not impossible. I'd recommend booking at least a couple days in advance, but if you are a bit adventurous ever get stuck without a spot to sleep, search for a 찜질방 (Jjimjilbang) on Naver Maps which is like a sauna with a hot springs type bath room, and most of them let you sleep there overnight. You also get to wake up to a really relaxing bath in the morning!

  • @user-sl309jd90
    @user-sl309jd90 Před 22 dny +2

    Definitely no for the Sauna and Jimjilbang option. South Korea is a relatively safe place that you can walk around at night for women but it doesn't mean crimes don't happen. Specially the sauna is not an accommodation at all. For women be careful not to fall asleep there even for a short moment. This happens very often that perverts show up there and try to hug or touch women sleeping there. It indeed happened to my friend as well when we were much younger and didn't have money for staying late at night together to have a chat other than the sauna place. After that day I've never been to Jimjilbang in my life. Still time to time I've seen bad news here and there. It might be a good experience to try but don't sleep there. Honestly I don't even know if it is a thing anymore for Koreans to go to Jimjilbang. I'm in 30s and when I was a kid it was common and popular. These days you can't even see them much anymore. Personally I don't recommend. Both for hygiene and safety reasons. Even for men, you might get your stuff stolen easily there. Only because it is a place where those kind of people will go and take the opportunity.

Change is obviously inevitable but I feel Seoul is becoming increasingly London-ified or New York-ified . . . i.e. it's becoming increasingly unaffordable - there's reasons for that obviously due to our economic system and unbridled capitalism. To add to that and on a superficial level, I feel that ever since the explosion of cultural exports (K-Dramas and K-Pop) via streaming services and other media (CZcams), Korea is increasingly becoming a louder and louder blip on the radar of many people throughout the world. This has led to an influx of tourists. I'm selfish when I say this but I feel like the Seoul I grew up with is disappearing, and for the worst. For one, I can't stand the manufactured nature of K-pop or the kitsch K-dramas. On a personal level, these are exactly the kind of tourists I don't want in Korea - those who feel drawn to a highly corporate and manufactured product simply to be consumed. Imagine if a huge increase of visitors to America was due largely to the Backstreet Boys and 90210 (I'm a Millenial obviously). Arrogant of me, I know but it's just how I feel. On another level, they're bulldozing so many dongs and replacing them with even more cookie cutter high rises. Some areas definitely need some TLC and gentrificaiton can be done right but from the videos I've seen, it doesn't look like they've got it down yet.
    I booked a room with my brother in a guesthouse in Yeonnamdong. Being close to Line 2 (the ring) is convenient for us visiting our relatives/old friends spread throughout Seoul but I don't know how much we'll be hanging in Hongdae, even though I used to go there in my early 20s. I've seen cute cafes nearby but even though I work now, my income is relatively average so charging 7,000 won for a cappucino is ridiculous. I've thought about moving back to Seoul but if I did, I'd definitely be forced to move rather towards the edge of town - out of cost reasons but also I think by preference. One can still live the old Seoul there.

      Hey @Douglas-vh5bb you're right that Seoul is becoming more and more like New York and London in that it's way more expensive now, highrises are put in place of older neighbourhoods, and there are tons of tourists, but I think it was inevitable just from how hard Korea was trying to grow and push its pop culture across borders. I know how you feel though, and I avoid most of these neighbourhoods for these exact reasons.
      I'd strongly recommend taking a trip to another city in the countryside while you are here such as Mokpo, Gunsan, or Tongyeong. Despite new cable cars and tourist attractions opening up, a lot of the "rough" Korea that you know from 10 years ago is still strongly in tact. And even within Seoul, check out the market in Bongcheon-dong and then go to Sundae Town in Sillim-dong for dinner. Those places still haven't been hit as hard as areas like Yeonnam-dong, Hongdae, or a lot of the other "trendy" areas highlighted in this video, and you can feel a blast to the past when you go there.

      Thanks for the recommendations. I'll be meeting up with a friend who works at the Seoul National Art Center so I'll try to convince her to swing by west to Bongcheon-dong and Sundae Town after she gets off work. It'll be funny to see what she thinks. Funny, many Seoulites I've talked to find nothing particularly endearing about these older neighborhoods. New is good in their eyes. Having an outsider's perspective helps though. My time away from Korea has only heightened my sensitivity (and I guess simply due to age) towards what it means to live in a meaningful urban environment.

      @@jjandorliadul that's awesome! Hope you have a good time there! Most Koreans I talk to don't have much interest in the older neighbourhoods as well, but I think they will miss it a lot once they disappear.

    First and foremost, the quality of this video's editing is simply outstanding, rivaling the likes of 'Abroad in Japan,' which is high praise given their renowned editing style. It's evident that you've elevated your game, showcasing exceptional cinematography, editing, and seamless flow-qualities I hadn't seen from your content to this extent before.
    However, I must voice a twinge of sadness. The sheer effort and quality you poured into this video might not reach its deserved audience due to the chosen topic. While your work is commendable, the subject matter may not resonate with many as the topic isn't currently trending. As someone familiar with Korea, I appreciate the content, but the topic might not captivate travelers.
    Korea offers so much more than just its popular tourist destinations. While it's often showcased in a polished light through K-dramas, there's a vast depth to explore-from its unique culture, challenges like low birth rates and countryside depopulation, to even sensitively tackling subjects like work culture. Diving into these could potentially draw a wider audience.
    In conclusion, while your video quality is top-notch, I wish more viewers could experience your incredible editing skills. Perhaps reconsidering the topic for your next piece might attract a broader audience. Keep up the fantastic work!

      Thanks a lot for the kind words and feedback Elias! At the moment I'm spending all of my time making these videos, which barely gives me time to think deeply/research about what topics will do well and what ones won't (although I should dedicate more time to this, I'm still learning). Just kind of throwing gum at the wall and seeing what sticks, but we have gotten some more attention recently which is very unfamiliar but nice at the same time!
      With this travel tips series in particular, I'm trying to be as inclusive as possible to all traveler types, and that includes people who just want to come with their families and see the palaces and go to Lotte World, etc. I'll just be making these videos from time to time, as I get asked these types of questions quite frequently on here, so it's a lot easier to just point them to a video than to answer in detail every time.
      I noted down the topics you've mentioned, as they are really interesting and important to share with the world to show a broad range of perspectives here. As for now, we have a lot of plans to travel around Korea, show the countryside, and film the people who live there more deeply and show how they live and what they are going through. I'll be busy with family stuff for the next little bit (I need to dedicate time to life stuff too), so it'll be a few months until we truly start, but hoping to show Korea in more detail soon!

      @@lostthenfoundIt's good to discuss various topics, but honestly, too many channels make wrong comments about Korea. This is because Korean society is very unique and requires deep understanding and research to understand. And the discussion is bound to vary depending on the subject who always interprets the phenomenon. If it's a light topic, there's no problem, but dealing with deep social problems requires a deep understanding of Korea. I don't trust even Korean media because they look at Korea so politically and simply
