As someone who recently reviewed 300+ interviews for an environment artist position, I can attest to the fact that your portfolio has to be relevant. A lot of people had nothing but pretty girls or a little bit of everything. I cannot judge an artist by one or two pieces. The artist we hired has 100's of different environment concepts! Because of the number of concepts that I saw, I am confident that he will deliver solid concepts in a timely manner, thus saving our small company money.

@Sam Fontaine if you love environments, you have to stand out in that area. Being average at many things is not as useful as being an expert at one field. Throwing creatures in there doesn't hurt... but I doubt you will get picked for a creature gig over someone who lives and breathes creature design (unless you're naturally a badass artist who can do anything and everything).

Totally. There's a big misconception about what concept art is since illustrations are used to promote games and films - most people see gorgeously rendered pieces and mistake them for being concepts. Most people don't see the rough, less-polished work that actually gets used behind the scenes in-house to make games.

There’s a difference between fine art and what’s being discussed here.
Fine art is not a contest. There are many fine artists out there whose work is completely removed from the fundamentals that you would learn if you were interested in being an illustrator, per say. Because that’s not what’s important. It’s about the art, about the subject matter, about the visceral and emotional impact. All of which can be achieved without being a top notch draftsman.
An illustrator or concept artist is first and foremost a draftsman.
Two very different positions to be in as an artist. Just something to keep in mind.

It’s definitely possible. You just have to work and train smarter. Focus on ONE area, whether it’s environment design, character design, props, modeling, etc., and become the best at it. Then if you want to, move on to other areas that interest you. Younger people have the advantage of trying out a bunch of different things before deciding what to do, older people less so. If you want to dive into this further, The Art Department podcast talks about this more.
Bottom line, age doesn’t matter. Your work and ability to meet deadlines does. 😉 Don’t feel ashamed of your age, just go out there and be awesome. Imagine yourself in ten years looking back having NOT decided to pursue the things you wanted. You’d be kicking yourself for not starting now.

Hopefully and probably you think the same way as I do, is not ok. Please artists make yourself get respected. Do not get into positions where they exploit you, even if it is a great curriculum point, especially for years like Mark said, just quit those jobs is not worth it. Your art will speak for you and if you need to get prestige then better improve your art not your curriculum. Is a complicated job and world, I'm not trashing on Mark's words they are the truth but at least I'm trying to make it clear that yeah the industry is like that but is not ok and nobody should tolerate it no matter what. Well, nothing is actually new. Just start by combining different things that already exist. Did it turn out good? Great! Didn't it? Great too, you checked out a bad combination. The greatest concepts in my opinion are those that are sufficiently grounded to make me think they could actually be made/found in real life. If you don't like this approach, I believe you could still find a place at illustration where you draw things that already exist, like landscapes and other backgrounds/scenes

creativity is a teachable skill, dw. it's not about imagining or creating something new, it's about connecting things that already exist into one cohesive product. a remix, if you'd like.
people that're considered extremely creative simply saw patterns in things others didnt notice, or simply by messing around with the question, "what if ...?" what if i combine this with that? what if i use this colour/pattern usually associated with one thing to represent another thing instead? etc.
so, again, it's not about creating something new, it's more about mixing and matching things together with the intent of making something better than those things independently. moodboards and collages i think are really good practices for creativity. :-)

I really love that I took that jump, and stepped out of my comfort zone.

    Hi Marc,
Thank you for all your tutorials. I have seen a lot from you about how to draw and how to prepare professionally. As an aging artist, I have become concerned with creating professional longevity for myself. I have noticed it has been harder to sit in the same position without strains and pains. What is your experience with creating an ergonomic work setup and how do you keep your body in shape to grind out long hours creating digitally?

From my observation, clients usually game devs cant fully comprehend an idea whether its a good or bad one and cause of that, concept artists tend to illustrate their ideas to communicate well with the client. And it goes on and on until the two terms got mixed up.

Hello!! Professional COncept artists here and I absolutely agree. What is most important is bring ideas, use references and ideas to the table, finished art is not as necessary as people think. We have only had a few clients asking for fully rendered and finished concept art. Most of the time they just want visuals to the ideas they put out. If this is a job you want to be a part of absolutely give more value to your creativity and ability to put that down in an image than the quiality of fully rendered drawings!

Setting an achievable goal is critical when pursuig a career on entertainment industry. As Marc mentioned, this is very much like pro athletes and, like them, very few reach the top. If your goal is to work as a concept artist at a large or medium-sized studio, mastering fundamentals is a must. You need to get the proper training at art school; not a college art faculty, but at a school or art and design focused to produce highly skilled professionals.
Ask at any studio which professionals are they looking for, and the answer you will get will be "not concept artists" Some of them already have more than they would like to have. But you also will see that concept artist job offers are numerous and always open on internet, and that it is because that positions are aimed to the best of the best.
Ask yourself first if you are pursuing the proper career path. Positions on the entertainment industry are not as much as one would think and is a extremely competitive field (this is even more true if you come from a Third World country where decent art school don't even exist) If you are someone who is alredy over his 20s or 30s and is still struggling with art fundamentals and have no formal or structured training, being a concept artist is possible, but no so probable. There are a lot of other industries that allow you the same creative freedom and are more achievable for someone that has no access to the best training.

I'm a composer and can't seem to be able to land a gig or become part of a team, even tho I hear only positive feedback from anyone and everyone. Have been thinking about taking courses in Concept Design on the side and growing that skill as well. I used to draw when I was younger and was very good at it without having a teacher. Also, I think there are more concept artists required for a project than composers. I don't even know if that's a good decision but it's definitely something I've been thinking about.

Wait maybe I will make a good concept artist. My art teacher gave me crap from never finishing my pieces (which is valid), but I just like getting my ideas on paper. Colors, shapes, etc. Recently I’ve been really focusing on my illustration skills. Rendering, painting, emotion, etc. And like, I see you painting here! My dream is to become a character concept artist, but my art style still needs work. So it was super encouraging when you said that "good art" isn't always what's needed, but ideas are what really counts (and I have more ideas than I know what to do with, haha 'xD).
