Why Dunlop Mini Fuzz Faces Are Awesome
Vložit
- čas přidán 6. 08. 2020
- One of my favorite pedals ever created is the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face. It's amazing, it’s iconic, but it's hard to fit on a pedal board, since this is arguably one of the largest pedal enclosures ever made. Don’t get me wrong. Jimi Hendrix loved it. I love it. I still want to use it. I just wish it was smaller, you know?
Well, the Genie from Aladdin (you can decide whether you want him to be played by Robin Williams, Will Smith, or James Monroe Iglehart) must be lurking around here somewhere, because my wish just came true. Dunlop made it come true, via the Fuzz Face Mini series.

It’s not like ten dollars ten times.
It is ten dollars ten times.
I only have one rule when it comes to fuzz. Don't get one with a picture of Jimi on. He sees you, and he judges.
That's the thing I hate about my Moen Shaky Jimi Univibe. Sounds good, looks terrible. Why did they have to put his image on it? And why is a shade of puke-purple?
I have to cover it with a napkin otherwise I can't play.
"Puke-purple"?
@@thomassmith5291 Too much Ribena?.
My rule is avoid anything Hendrix ever used.
There have been more than enough strat + univibe + fuzz face + wah into a Marshall guitar players. Robin Trower and SRV both tried.
SRV had to go full Texas to get over it and Robin Trower is mainly only known by a specific type of guitarist.
The only thing worse than having a watered down Hendrix rig is trying to dress like him. No one will ever be that cool or smooth, and his style was forward thinking *at the time*
Matt Gilbert Words of wisdom
I love the "we make great pedals, but so does xyz" attitude of jhs. Not constantly trying to tear down the competition.
Tearing down the competition with zero help to customers.
30 years of zero help.
Now they despise their own customer creations.
Now there's no fender supply.
A rising tide floats all ships.
Yes, you do love that, as the reverse psychology of the JHS show is working it's magic on you. ;)
We are truly living in the golden age of guitar gear.
Why don't you add a public statement?
Nick always looks like he's thinking about lunch when he plays.
He plays for food.
@@jefflitchfield4950 That totally makes sense now!
I’m really glad he’s not fat or this would be quite a roast

Can you blame him? 😂
Nick’s drum sound is an underrated part of all these videos. Always sounds great!
was anyone rating anything on the video at all? where do they publish the ratings?
@@BTsMusicChannel you must be the life and soul of all the parties you attend, if any
@@delta_f HAHAH! i just find that "overrated" usage is overrated. Besides...we are not here to judge art, we are here to experience it and try to understand it. The guitar and drum cops in the back of the room judging performances are no fun at parties either. And I wouldn't be playing a video about mini fuzz faces (or any pedal) at a party.
its the mixer with 6 colorboxes in it, but yea
He’s a solid drummer 🥁
Joe Bonamassa: “Pedal users are f**king lazy”

I'm literally shopping for a mini fuzz face this very second, what a timely upload!!
Band of Gypsys Mini Fuzz Face all the way. Works great on both humbuckers and single coil guitars. It has been on my board since they released the pedal. It reminds me of the Miami Pop Festival performance of Hendrix where his tone was INSANE. Super aggressive when you want it to be. Cheers!
I’m actually giving away a fuzz face on my insta if you’re interested! It’s not a classic Dunlop one, but it sounds just as good, and it’s a good sturdy pedal! It’s made by Ck Audio. Anyways, if you wanna ever my insta is @andrewthomasguitarist
Yeah Josh has this thing where he uploads stuff right when you need it. Kinda like those creepy Facebook or Google ads.
Take the grey hendrix. It's very very good. Cleans up great. Have also the j.b. Geranium. So sensitive for temperature. Can not use it live.
@@Rodiniaband I actually have this one already, it's my only fuzz! I like how aggressive and more like an overdrive it sounds than a typical fuzz. I was just thinking I wanted something with a more fuzzy character to mix and match with it.
The next JHS pedal: The Full Face = every Fuzz Face in one pedal
So the psych series fuzz?
I believe you mean the... Fuzzuletta
That sounds like some serious business, not that Dunlop garbage. If that offends you, you don't know what you're missing. Pay more, reap vast rewards.

I don't like choosing. It's like choosing between your kids. And these pedals have a face. Faces can get sad. I don't like sad faces. I like happy fuzzy faces. OK let's play music!

I have the blue silicon mini.
My brother got it for me for Christmas and he knows nothing about guitar.
It’s one of my favorite pedals. It’s almost entirely impractical and insanely loud, but I play it at home into a big ol’ memory man and a USA Blues Jr. through an old Jensen Concert 15....
and that’s how I spend a lot of nights.
Hmm I ordered the blue mini FF from Sweetwater and it was awful Radio signals and super noisy Very dissatisfied Glad you got a good one I don't think they QC the transistors so really have to try them out I suppose Oh well
I've got the blue one and it sounds great. Just wish it got along better with wahs.
Paul Cowart There is an internal trim pot that you can adjust w/ a small philips head screwdriver. It affects the bias of those transistors. Mess with it and see if you can’t get some better luck.
Drew Sollars just run your wah after FF. If you hate that, get the MXR BC105 Fuzz. It’s the the same exact fuzz with a buffer so it’ll behave after the wah.
Thanks!
Anyone else wish the jam sessions were longer? Y'all sounds great
The best thing about this channel, is because of Josh's love of pedals and even promoting some pedals over his own, and because there are always new pedals coming out, this channel has an almost unlimited supply of possible material!
I didn't know josh Glad loved pedals.?
I thought he loved the goonies.
Whoa...I made a lucky guess then, went with the Jimi Mini at release a bunch of years ago. Thanks for all you do for the effects community.
How’s about a “what pedals would jimi use if he was playing today” video? Interesting exploratory deep dive into pedal history and experimentation vs new technology and innovation! Something the JHS channel was made for? Cheers 👍
If Jimi were alive today, he would be too old to care.
@@Ndlanding He would be younger than B.B. King was.

Old post, but I've never heard Nick's drums blend so perfectly with any other tone or Pedal on this channel on my KRKs it sounds perfect.Gotta look into this it pushes all the right frequencies.
The teal Hendrix was my fave. Well done, with all of them. I don't actually own any JHS pedals yet but I think I want to buy them all, just because Josh seems to be the most supportive and classy dude in the industry.
Just curious if you've got any yet ,and which one's ?
If it hasn’t been done already, could we see a video on your favorite “combo” pedals? I.e the keeley caverns. Love the show and you guy’s pedals!!!
There is a JHS video called “Must Have 2 in 1’s” which covers combo pedals
Jacob Lopez thank you!
Nick’s drumming makes it twice as gooder! Great video!
That Bonamassa's fuzz are killer! Fantastic tone!
Quick Fact...
The new Psych 69 mini series Dunlop Hendrix Octavio has a switch to bypass the octave circuit.
This setting gives you the red Band of Gypsies Fuzz Face (which was an Octavia with the octave circuit removed).
I emailed Dunlop and they confirmed this. 😉
Band of Gypsys Fuzz Face with the Unicorn is what I rip on my board! One of the best feeling combinations I've ever used. That fuzz face mod video was one of my favorite JHS Show episodes next to Paul Gilbert. Its such a fuzzy wonderful day. Cheers.
@@joeyskar That Paul Gilbert video may have been the most wholesome content I've watched on youtube ever.
The Hendrix FFM3 just won my heart, even though I didn't think it would. Now I need one.
I have bought two of these. Love 'em! My favourite pedals ever 😍
Your drums and drummer always sound amazing. Much props to the recording engineer, drum manufacturer and drummer. And of course your guitar playing is always tasteful and very catchy.
I have about 15 or so fuzz pedals, the FFM3 is by far my favorite. Great video!
My friend Ken had an old full size red one, which he used on bass, and it sounded nuts.
I have the BOG's one and it's the most versatile fuzz I have ever owned. Love the clean up!
That was the absolute best video effects I’ve ever seen with the explosion and smoke cloud to the smaller pedal
I have the MXR version of the Gypsy Fuzz, which is almost the same as the Dunlop version. It's my favorite of all fuzzes. It's very versatile.
My wife got me the Hendrix Experience mini-fuzz and I was so excited for it that the first thing I did was run it with my bass, plugged to my Fender Bass Amp... Motörhead sound, right there...
Thanks for the Skywave mention. I was a member of that band, and I really enjoy your channel.
Only recently found this channel. This guy has a great sence of humour. Really entertaining while informative. Subscribed.
YESSSS I’ve been thinking about buying one of these mini fuzz faces. THIS IS THE VIDEO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! Thanks!!
I just told my wife that I needed a new pedal. She asked me how much it was and I told her, "$10 ten times."
She just turned around and walked away.
So is that a yes...?
Yeah? She's turned around to go and buy it for you?
@@PilchHarmonics fingers crossed!
It's the classic "I can't think of a reason to stop you, so I'll pretend I'm not aware of it".
When I buy pedals off Reverb I put them on my board and then immediately sprinkle some dust on them off the floor so that if my wife won't realize that they are new.
she didn't say no. that's all that matters.
The new little song: "I don't have that pedal. Am I gonna survive?" -> super funny! LOL !!!!
That ghost bass player is super solid. Love this eppy! The Gypsy fuzz is my go to sound and I absolutely love its different and dynamic fuzzy goodness. But now I might need to go get me some more of these minis!
I think I may have enjoyed your playing on this video more than on any other. Nice work, Josh.
Fuzz is easily one of my favorite effects. I also like combining it with modulation
Yeah. A fuzz, lots of reverb, and a little bit of chorus to fatten up the sound. The manna of heaven itself.
Wow, the FX when fuzz face explodes in your hand like a popcorn and turn into a microface!!!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
If you order the Bonamassa one, you get a free pair of really stupid sunglasses glued to your face.
Yes, but it's better than having to wear a ten-gallon cowboy hat.
@Cas van der Wal It's not like he's anyone, really. He plays well, but his playing (and personality, since we do get to see/hear him so often) has as much magnetism as a lollipop stick. In a gutter.
This comment made my day.
You have to look like the agents from the Matrix to even consider ordering one. If you try to buy one from a shop and haven’t bought into Joe’s bullshit, Agent Smith will appear beside you from the drum demo room in the store amd force you to be a boring middle class douche
Someone should make a Jumbo Fuzz Face that is so big it has to be transported by shipping container only.
I used to have the mini Bonamassa Fuzz Face. I loved EVERYTHING about it - except that as soon as I turned it on I became immediately inaudible when playing live 😕 Also, can't believe Josh doesn't have the limited edition silver mirrored version of the Band of Gypsies mini Fuzz Face, it's definitely the coolest 🎸
You had to travel round the world in reverse to get it though.
A Dunlop Pedal Video would be nice! There are so many legendary and crazy dunlop pedals. Also rare Pedals like the Dunlop tvp 1.
5:24 this sounds amazing, nice playing!
I have the large JHF1.
I really enjoyed this. Looks like I'll be adding the Band of Gypsies and the Bonamassa just for different flavors. Great episode, Cheers!
Your recommendation for the wren and cuff de la riva fuzz was spot on dude. I absolutely love that pedal. With some tweaking on the dip switches you can dial in any fuzz tone you need. From some low gain Velcro rip vintage style fuzz to full on face melting bush and pumpkins muff tones. It is so good with unwanted noise to. I have the quartermaster x8 and I run it with all different drives and distortion pedals before and after it and im getting endless great tones man. Love the he show and what your doing. Your also a great entertainer man. You and the rest of the crew make a great team. I look forward to the new uploads.
Your idea of ' dialling in ' is wrong.
These days manufacturing doesn't give you a choice.
YOU might think you're ' getting tones ' but that's also wrong.
This was great to hear them all back to back. Teal Hendrix and Black Bonamassa are the two that pull at my ears and my wallet.
Shout out for that snare sound. Love it.
You’re a wizard too!? Damn, that Band of Gypsies Fuzz Face sounds friggin rad.
Great video... and those drums sound amazing! Came for the fuzz, stayed for the drums. 🔥👍🏻
I’ve had the shiny red FM-2 Germy one for a while.
I love it. Very polite, awesome grungy tones, knobs work. Fuzzy wonder box.
Wife likes it’s cute little smile.
I love this chanel, because subscribers are fun like Nick and we have fun together.👌
I’ve been listening this channel in the headphone and it’s fantastic the jams sounds.
I love the spitty sound of the light blue fuzz face. Really liked the black one too. All of them are good. Fuzz face is good
No pedal related comment here, just wanted to say Josh you have really great timing, always super locked with the drums. Great video as always!
I already have the dark blue and this makes me want to buy it again. It’s a sick pedal and want em all!!!!
"How many Sovtek" heads does a person need?"
JOSH: "Every one ever made."
that “i don’t have that pedal” song is such a great tune. also, love the fuzzfaces. great vid
Me: I don't need another fuzz.

This is crazy... I am researching today on Fuzz Faces and JHS does a video on it ? Cmon
I just got back into playing bigtime and have enjoyed watching your videos so much during this pandemic I went on Ebay and bought a new Angry Charlie can't wait to get it!
The great thing about the Fuzz Face and their circuits is that they clean up real nice by rolling the volume down on the guitar.
The Red Fuzz Face with white knobs was amazing!

One of the best channels ever made! Playing is great reviews are great and the jokes. I don’t have that pedal is funny stuff
My favorite fuzz face type thingy is the tweak fuzz by Seymour dunkin . The switched cap before the circuit makes it so versatile, like a dirty boy but 900$ cheaper. But I'm going to get a mini fuzz face, because of this video

I have the silicon mini fuzz face and I love it. It's nice to se it in your videos. Fuzzy wonderful day for you too :)
I'd love to see a video on Harmonic Percolator clones. It's a super unique distortion that only had 10(?) units ever made and so there's a massive range of pedals based on the circuit, including the Karma Suture by Catalinbread.
JH-F1 is the best in my experience. Luv this pedal!
Woo hoo, I have the full fat Joe bonamassa one! Nice polished brass colour and sounds great too.
Hey Josh I own the BOG Fuzz love it but really dig the Hendrix FFM3 Thanks for all the great viewing
Brilliant, fun video. This is the only demo I've ever seen that does all of the minis & this many actual Fuzz Face branded FFs. I've only played the red germanium version & it wasn't my thing. I'm interested in trying out a couple of the others now. Also, it just occurred to me that these Friday videos have been coming in at under 20 minutes. I'm here to ask:
R.E.M pre-Warner Bros. years>Warner Bros years (ie: IRS albums the best)??
I say yes with Green being the exception - a transitional record, still had their mojo when that one was made...eventually got it back but something was lost along the way. "Accelerate" was awesome.
I hope my reply also boosts algorithm.
In Mother Russia, you do not boost algorithm, algorithm boosts you...
"Reveal" was also gud.

Hey Josh. I really like how you approach some of your riffs in a very melodic and constructed way including some elements of dissonance with some bends and rough tones. I don’t know if you know Patrick Walden who used to be the guitar player of the Babyshambles on their first album “Down in Albion”. If you don’t, check that album and listen to the tones and the very elaborate yet dissonent guitar playing. I think it could interest you. Cheers from Berlin. Yann

I love my FFM3. I have maaaannnyyyyy fuzzes, and many fuzz face style pedals, but the Dunlop FFM3 is 💥💥💥
This episode is a joy. Thanks very much. I own the FFM2. I love what it does. It's slightly frustrating that it hates modulation and filters being in the chain, but it's glorious on its own.
