Fixing a DEADLY Issue On A CB750! Monoshock Mount Failure!

- This CB750 was brought into the shop for some work and I discovered a very deadly issue on the rear suspension mounts. This bike was previously modified and the upper monoshock mount was TEARING apart! This would have caused a crash which can be fatal. This issue was due to poor design and fabrication skills which could have seriously inured someone. I redesigned the upper shock mount to a much more safe version and the bike is far more safe now.
Ill likely show a bit more on this project but simply couldn't not show this issue. Be sure to look for stuff like this when buying custom motorcycles.

That original welding is what is known widely as a bodge job. Your replacement is a piece of art, as is your welding! It’s great to see your attention to detail and obviously to safety and what price can you put on that?! The future owner(s) of this bike will probably never know what went into making it a reliable and safe machine. Well done… 👏👏👏👏

You have to be careful buying a project done by others. I bought a largely finished project and had to fix literally everything the other person had touched, everything was done wrong or badly and every single bolt was so over tightened I had to change most of them.
Definitely, I had actually seen this bike for sale and saw there were some potentially questionable methods on it. I later saw the new owner reaching out on local facebook pages for anyone to help him with it and I contacted him right away. Glad I did

Damn man... That's pretty scary. A monoshock conversion is no freaking joke man. I have build several bikes. Fully rebuilt a fair few motors. I can weld and wrench OK. No way in HELL do I feel comfortable doing a full mono conversion on a bike. That is a point of failure that is basically instant death or critical care if it fails while moving over 20mph. Some people are out of their minds. I Really want to do a mono build. But I have been waiting several years to find a good donor bike that was factory built with a mono for my build. And I will continue to wait.

@@BrickHouseBuilds Oh really, That's cool. I'll tune in to see you tackle it. I've measured a VFR SSS, the pivot sleeve/tube is a little wider than the ID of the frame where the swingarm will mount. I haven't bought the swingarm yet, but I'll either have to cut down the swingarm pivot tube or mod the frame or a little of both. The critical is keeping it centered. I've also heard a Ducati SSS will fit with less mod, but I'd like to keep all Honda.
Some people just shouldn’t be allowed to work on stuff......anything. Clearly no basic engineering skills. Great save!
The current owner is definitely happy I spent the time to make it right. The bike has much potential and that single item would have ruined it all

Thank you for that feedback. Check out my GL650 shock video and I talk about why I designed my linkage tabs the way I did. I also showed cutting them. On this project I actually made a new tool and used these tabs as a trial run for said tool. I can try to show more of the making process and possibly less welding footage lol

I'm no mechanical engineer and custom building my first subframe, but.... If anything it will need a heavier spring from the over building and heavy guage metal. Same in UK someone can chop, cut and weld then get an MOT as long as the brakes and lights work then kill someone. There seems to be a trend with "novices" doing bike builds too. Actually makes me want to do another custom build and even without finesse and show bike skills, start another channel just to show it can be done but safely. Anyway, I understand your rant and respect you even more knowing you look after people with pricing considering your skill level you could charge whatever you want. Anyway, mine is coming along it's got an exhaust mounted, new ignition barrel, air intake sorted and about to cover it with some cheap mesh... I just want the fab work done as its all starting to flash rust but the big issue I'm facing now is all the flux core slag in tight spots I can't fully chip off, I'd wager it will react with primer and cause a ton of issues later but with an almost zero budget we shall just have to wait and see!
With this specific swingarm and shock setup the stock spring rate is fine as its set up nearly the same between the bikes. On non linkage type setups like on many cx500 builds you do need a heavy spring. I've demonstrated this on various builds as well.

Luckily the owner brought the bike in. That thing was a death trap. Imagine going 60mph when that shock finally gives way? Ouch. I'm not huge fan of doing a mono shock conversion on a vintage bike.
It was a literal death trap from sure.

I think learning that it's ok to ask for help is a big step. There are many many things I cant do and need a hand on. I lean on more knowledgeable people when I can and wish this person would have done the same.

Nice fab work, over built is always better than broken on first ride. I have an old CB in the basement I am gonna mod at some point, and I was thinking of a mono shock build, so this gives me a nice idea for a solid top mount.

would have been pretty shocking for the driver to hit a heavy bump and take a shock tower to the ballbag. At first, I was going to respond that we aren't all welding pros with thousands worth of welding gear in a shop to be able to do things perfectly, but after seeing what you're talking about..... a 10th grader that's taken a semester of shop class would know better than to do that. Especially when a broken mount there would be perilous to his beans and frank.
Yeah it was not acceptable from even a beginning standpoint.
That was a pretty clueless construction. Maybe the original designer does not understand the lever concept. Typically the weight on the rear axle is three or four hundred pounds. But the swingarm acts as lever on the monoshock mounting point multiplying this by the ratio of swingarm pivot-to-axle over the swingarm pivot-to-monoshock, and this is large like a factor of 5 or so. So there's a couple of THOUSAND pounds force on the upper pivot.
I doubt the original "designer" never got close to thinking that deeply on it lol. It really was horrible

That's an amazing job! I'm not sure to understand when you talked about ride height at 9:25 . How do you setup your bike on your working bench to play with the height of the bike? Do you explain that in a other video? Thanks, loving your channel!
I appreciate it! For the ride height just think about where the shock mounts are. The lower the top mount is, the higher the rear of the bike will be as it will compress the same. I do have a cx500 video where I remounted the rear shock to address a ride height change.

Good question, I'd say 6-7 hours if I did it all at once. Hardest part was removing material cleanly near the frame joint and welding it in weird positions

@@lindenaho If you prefer the other style I'd recommend a brace or different swingarm entirely. Check out my white cx500 build for a non-linkage style monoshock setup. Its braced how you may like

Based on the forum threads it is a very popular option. I don't want to say direct fit but it may be close.
I have an issue with the lower mount, one of the bolts is not aligned correctly, so is it possible for me to alter it to adjust it? And also the bracket is also bent... Should i just change the hole monoshock or i can get a bracket thats suitable?
Thats impossible for me to answer as I have no idea what you are working on and can't be there in person to see
My feeling is if you're not going to do it right then don't do it at all
I understand we all have different skill sets but some things must be done to a professional level for safety reasons like this.
Somebody ruined a good motorcycle. Those builds are more often than not utter garbage and make the bike worse in every aspect.

So what, get your torch or whatever and cut the thing out of there. How do you know it was done by another shop? I'd say it wasn't done by a shop but by the person that owned the bike at the time. No way would any shop that I know of that would let shoddy work like that out the door just in terms of how hack it was done. I have over the years had and modified then sold a number of hack jobs that I knew were very poorly done and the people that bought them bikes also knew what the deal was with each of them because them hacked mods were usually the reason i was selling those bikes in the first place. Then say one of my old hack jobs makes it into your shop and you see it and start bitching about it like you are on to something. Just saying. Oh yea I am not a "shop" by any means im just a dude that has a lot of tools in my garage. I never take on anybody's bike or car for any custom type stuff like that for the sole reason being that i lack that attention to detail for lack of a better term to satisfy any said customer. In short, I'd have people coming back at me bitching, kind of like you were in the beginning of your video . Again, just saying. but am i getting better....not at all. I suffer from instant gratification and need it done now so i can ride, now! and for one last time....just saying
Im not really sure where you are going with your comment as its very confusing but...
- Customer brought me the bike to work on
- I noticed the deadly shock mount and said it had to be repaired
- I repaired it and now it's safe to ride
I dont think I said a shop did the work I just know other shops refused to work on the bike. If I see dangerous work I will point it out and shame those who did it. A person's life is more important than not pointing out poor work done by somebody in order to be a lesson
