  • On January 27th, this Air Greenland Airbus A330 flew into Fort McMurray, Alberta, operating a charter flight for the Arctic Winter Games.
    The Arctic Winter Games are a multi-sport and cultural event for Indigenous peoples living around the Arctic Circle, and have been taking place every two years since 1970.
    This year, the Games are being held in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in Northeastern Alberta, with participants coming from as far away as northern Scandinavia and Greenland, hence this special flight to Fort McMurray.
    Now, Air Greenland and Fort McMurray are two things I never expected to say in the same sentence. They're one of the most unique airlines in the world, and their operation is fascinating.
    Air Greenland's A330 usually flies exclusively between Greenland and Denmark, so seeing it in Canada is an exceptionally rare event. Add Fort McMurray of all places into the mix, and you can see why I had to make the trip up from Calgary to see it!
    This is one of the largest aircraft to ever land in Fort McMurray, and a 7500 foot runway plus an A330 was bound to make for quite the interesting arrival. The plane stayed overnight and left the following morning back to Greenland.
    Enjoy this very rare, all-red A330!

    It was pretty awesome to see the plane bank for its final approach right over my house, last time we had a plane of this magnitude land here at YMM was a medical emergency landing of an AC 787 from LHR-YYC. Awesome catch, gorgeous airplane.

    I remember seeing a Greenland A330 in Whitehorse for the arctic winter games. I’ve also seen an AC787 land in Fort McMurray after a medical emergency. Regionally there is a longer runway a bit further north though to service the oil fields. People always said they could land 747s there apparently.

    Fabulous! Thanks for going out of your way to share this. I wondered how Air Greenland fit this into their daily schedule to Copenhagen - were they using both this A330-200 and their new A330-800? No, according to FR24 they just seamlessly added Fort McMurray as an add-on to their Copenhagen flights. On 27th Jan OY-GRN flew CPH-SFJ-YMM and the next day flew YMM-SFJ-CPH. As for the YMM being at bit short at 7,500ft, the new airport being built at NUUK will be shorter at only 7,000 and yet they plan to do the daily CPH flight from there when it is finished. Again. Good work! Great video!

    • @hendrik7354
      @hendrik7354 Před rokem

      It was a special charter that has been planned long ahead. They knew when the aircraft would not be available for their normal scheduled flights and when it would return to serve those. Usually they would've probably chartered another aircraft from HiFly, Vamos Air, etc. in order operate flights beyond the Copenhagen route, but now that they have two widebodies (though it will probably only be temporarily) it's easy for them.
      And considering the Copenhagen route it seems like they just use both A330s interchangeable right now, I'd assume that they want crews to slowly adapt to the changes while hoping for someone to buy this rather old A332 (which I don't really see happening any time soon tbh)

      But the new runway scheduled to be completed in 2024 maybe opens new opportunities for Air Greenland. However, Nuuk has only some 20.000 People living there, and there are no interconnecting roads to other towns and villages along the cost

    • @andersdrakkar
      @andersdrakkar Před rokem +1

      @@wakeupcall2665 Exactly. That's why the Greennand/Danish Governments should make a decision to make the airport bigger -not just the runway-, and I believe that a lot of Canadians would certainly go to Greenland and Denmark. That would really make Greenland grow not just in visitors but boost their economy both for Greenland and Denmark. SAS does not fly to Canada. Air Greenland would help boost those two economies. Remember, Greenland (and therefore Denmark) is just next door to us!

      @@erik_griswold Washington? I’d say Canada has more in common to Greenland (people, cultures, temperatures, etc) than any city in the States. The airlines have to do their homework before “selecting” their international destinations. The US cities are not the correct answer always when wanting to expand operations. Canada has a lot more than what many countries think of. I’m afraid NORSE has to hear that as well. Why are they not flying to Canada?
