  • This is rare video footage of saxophonist James Moody during Labor Day weekend of 2000 at the Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival in Philadelphia. He's performing a comical send-up of the old standard, "Pennies From Heaven".
    The annual Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival in Philadelphia has as its namesake a jazz elder, a saxophonist who many expect to be a DRUMMER. (No, this Tony Williams is not the late, great percussionist of the same name.) Tony is firmly dedicated to the key concept in his festival's identity: "Scholarship". Here's a paragraph from his web site:
    ~~~~~~~
    "He also had a passion to 'keep jazz alive' so it was not enough for Tony just to be a professional musician. He had to give back and he did that in a way that can not be matched by many. Tony Williams started a jazz theory and music program in his school, the Ada H. Lewis Middle School Jazz Band. Not long after, he started his own jazz theory and music program that is now known as the Mount Airy Cultural Center, Inc., of which he is the founder and director."
    ~~~~~~~
    The Mount Airy Cultural Center is a not-for-profit social service agency that would very much appreciate and make very good use of your donations.
    This festival is an annual event which has taken place in Philadelphia every year since 1990. However, it might be that the 2014 gathering will be the last in the series. Stay tuned to www.tonywilliamssaxman.com for details.

    After all that yodelling, the rubato drama of the acapella singing and that long, RELAXED (no double-time histrionics needed) tenor solo, I think my favorite moment other than the traditional four quarter notes on the bass drum that lead into the chorus, is during the "fours" @11:10 when moody's high note virtually forces the crowd to start clapping along, again! I don't think I ever heard Moody play so long and well on this, and he performed it every night I saw him.
