Ernie was there before ALL of them. Then came Kenny, then came Barkley and lastly Shaq. It takes all four of the wheels for that show to run. I have been watching this show since FOREVER and the NBA taking it's games to Amazon Prime will lose them lots of fans. Hate ESPN and their screaming analysts and hate that show with Kendra with those silly games.

David says EJ isn't super important, which means he doesn't watch when Adam Lefkoe hosts. The Tuesday show is terrible and even when Lefkoe hosts with OG crew, it just isn't the same. It amazes me how often EJ takes a good segment and elevates it to a classic just with a joke or something insightful.

John is right that being a prisoner of now is killing businesses and trickle down hurting the rest of us, and David just laughs at it like he's not responsible for his actions and it's the market's fault while making no detailed argument for why short sighted thinking is exclusively better for business. John has experience making long term deals that paid off huge in the end. If those deals would not have survived the short sighted mindset David is representing here then that short sightedness would have been bad business. How is that so hard, or antithetical to being a "businessman" to admit? We're in a time where businesses are buying businesses to benefit from running them into the ground. Arguing that short sightedness is best for us all because it's "good business" is saying you have no stake in the world you live in or its future, or that you see yourself as above its impact and consequences. That short sightedness is hurting us right now in big ways. Love the moment where David admits he's still negotiating with John, the three of you are great together and love the show. Thank you for doing this!

David argues that cutting cable doesn’t save customers money because it costs just as much to patch together subscription services to access the same content. While true, this falsely assumes that customers are unwilling to watch and care about fewer sports. We just cut the cord and saved well north of $150 a month. Are we going to subscribe to ESPN+ and all of these other things to retain access to what we had before? No. We will watch whatever is on and invest interest in that? Yes. The hard pill to swallow is that there is too much content. You know what I will feel when I can’t watch baseball or all of the NBA playoff games? Happy I saved $150 a month. [And no, people who have little or no savings are generally not in that boat because of excessive potato chip consumption.]

The problem with Amazon is they don't understand the user experience when it comes to watching sports. Do some people watch sports on Amazon Prime? Sure. Has it been enough to get a return on their Thursday night football investment? NO. The reason why people tune INTO TNT and ESPN for sports is because people are already on there watching regularly scheduled programming and during that programming commercials and promos in commercial slots talking about upcoming sporting events organically flows through. People just aren't firing up an app on a device or TV to watch a live sports event unless it was some kind of PPV type thing. Amazon scoops up the NBA, no one's tuning in. Amazon is just not live TV top of mind with with the average consumer.

The contracts of Shaq, Charles, and Kenny will have almost no effect on whether TNT will keep the NBA rights.
Those contracts (and the 90 minute Inside the NBA) only help TNT keep NBA viewers after the game so they can charge more in ads because they have more eyeballs.

What a perfect metaphor… I love Skipper, and I mostly like David, but he can be irritating. That metaphor shows one reason why.

It costs MUCH more than 2 dollars more per month to avoid commercials. Bootlegging is going to soar through the roof. Guys like John Skipper are pure evil. Watch how he grins like an idiot when he talks about increased fees or overpaying for sports.

I don’t think those 3 guys would do the show without Ernie. The combination is perfect with those 4. It won’t work with others… the B team inside the NBA numbers prob low af lol

If NBA games leave TNT I hope NBC gets the NBA rights rather than Amazon...NBC Sports already has experience with broadcasting sports...and sports in general on cable seems natural rather than on a specific streaming service...

I think that if NBC steals NBA package from Turner Sports, NBC should rotate airing the NBA Finals with ABC/ESPN. Similar to the Super Bowl being rotated between CBS, Fox, & NBC and (more recently) the Stanley Cup Finals rotating between ABC/ESPN and Turner Sports.

Podcasting has meant that Barkley, Ernie, Shaq & Kenny are somewhat obsolete after the boomer generation age out of the media landscape.
Also NBCSN lost the NHL and gained the NBA. Thats a big gain imo.
Primevideo will do a deal with Infinity or whoever the comcast cable distributor is like Rogers did with SlackTV. Where they broadcast NHL games via Sportsnet +.

Ernie is cool but I don't watch the show for him, personally. I see ppl saying that the show isn't the same when not hosted by him but let's not be naive. The ppl they chose to host the show in Ernie's absence are not as good as him by design. It's like the goalkeeper in soccer. They're not going to have a starter as the Number 2.
Also, Barkley has always been must-see TV. The reason he was chosen for all of those commercials in the early 90s was his personality and charisma. It's no surprise he has done as well as he has, imo.

It’s the combination of Ernie, Chuck, Shaq, and Kenny that makes the show great in my opinion. You remove Ernie and you got a problem, the show doesn’t work the same. He’s the damn point guard feeding the ball to the superstars…wtf are you thinking!
