This was my first time watching the doc, I enjoyed it!
pog, the doc is one of those things that means a lot to me and will always be so nostalgic cuz it represents it a large period of my teenage life. glad to see when other people share that sentiment

Shit is so crazy to think, Isai had this profound skill that could be flipped on and off… and he mostly tried when someone else’s well-being was on the line. Can’t imagine the god-like matches we could’ve seen if he wanted it for himself, but that is his destiny and I’m sure he applied that energy to better things… hope he’s well.
He is still winning smash 64 tournaments, he just stopped playing melee, not smash altogether lol

I still come back to this VOD once every week or two, love the reactions and love the doc overall! Smash for life!
I think Ludwig summed up my biggest issue with the Doc. There’s 6 or 7 episodes on the old guard of Melee talking about Ken (and an entire episode dedicated to Isai that felt hella awkward and lowkey demeaning) while the Mango era was kinda shoehorned in.
Almost felt like they skipped from the end of the Ken and PC Chris type era to EVO so they could get the feel good ending. Players like Armada were glossed over imo
In fairness to the producers, documentary started funding in 2011 and came out in 2013. The era you want them to focus more attention on wasn't quite "history" yet. It was probably already difficult to get interviews with the 5 gods and have them talk openly given how at the time they were all still active competitors. Armada's time frame of success was as documentary was close to completing production. It'd be easier now to do 2008-2013 (and on) than then.
so the documentary is in essence of the start of competitive melee. The "shoehorn" feel of the 5 gods era (2008-2013) and skipping straight to evo is more a product of timing and still needing to address the state of the game with more limited source material.

Overall I think my only problems with this doc were narrator, That the later half of the series didn't have the neat explanations of the game like the first half and the Mang0 episode. Mang0 episode was garbage.
Fun Fact the mango episode portrayed mango so negatively that it almost lost him his C9 sponsorship

Ludwig seems to be confusing what prog and lucky were saying about Mang0, Prog was talking about grasping the game and understanding it overral, Lucky was explaining what he perceived Mang0's active learning process is. Just because you're a natural doesn't mean you don't still have a learning process it just means you likely pick up on things faster than others do which in Mang0's case is absolutely true given his results since Pound 3, the youngest and oldest player to win a major isn't something that can be easily done with hard work alone.

I relate hard w m2k. Not that I'm a human robot genius but that most ppls relationship w me is through smash or some other games. Lots of my relationships, especially casual ones, are like that. I also love spending hours and hours of time by myself in the basement studying the game. Not like a genius like him, but same relationship w games sorta.

Been playing melee a year after watching this live, I still suck ass
That's totally normal, most people don't start seeing any tangible results at least until 2-3 years of grinding but if the current Gen has showed us anything it's that hardwork does pay off if you've got the drive to be the best. Zain is best example, came into the scene in 2014 and didn't do anything notable until 2016 and I think it wasn't until 2018 he even started winning tournaments but the guy worked extremely hard and is now the #1 player in the world.

I was 10 and was walking my dog down the street and saw a mountain lion at the end of our street where there was a field. I got home and called animal control and they said I must have seen a large dog or something and didn't even send anyone out. Then it was in the local newspaper saying a girl mistook something for a mountain lion. And then THEY FOUND A MOUNTAIN LION and had to dart and relocate it. Im like I fucking told you!! This was in NorCal. There are also bears in the redwoods here, and snow in NorCal in places like Tahoe, so this dude has no idea what he's talking about.

i hate to be that guy but a lot of Ken's wins are seriously lackluster. Like he beats PC chris at MLG because of Mute City cars and he started his career being the best with fucking items on like he really gets a lot of second chances in the era he played.
